                 In this tiny town by the sea, the sidewalks are sacred, the Seaside Deli is the place

                                                                                                                                                                           Why we like it: The broad leathery leaves of
                                                                                                                                                                        this native evergreen tree can be written on with
                                                                                                                                                                        a fingernail. In summer, showy pink and white
                                                                                                                                                                        flowers appear at night before ripening into light
                                                                                                                                                                        green, poisonous ‘apples.’ Eventually, the fruit turns
                                                                                                                                                                        black, slits open and reveals bright red seeds. The
                                                                                                                                                                        resinous material around the seeds was once used
                                                                                                                                                                        as caulking for ships, hence the name.
                                                                                                                                                                           How to grow it: Pitch apple is especially
