EVERY WEEK, A GREAT PLANT FOR YOUR GARDEN
Pitch Apple (clusia rosea)
Why we like it: The broad leathery leaves of
this native evergreen tree can be written on with
a fingernail. In summer, showy pink and white
flowers appear at night before ripening into light
green, poisonous ‘apples.’ Eventually, the fruit turns
black, slits open and reveals bright red seeds. The
resinous material around the seeds was once used
as caulking for ships, hence the name.
How to grow it: Pitch apple is especially
attractive espaliered. It works well near decks and
patios as its dense canopy doesn’t reach taller than
