									Student Paediatric Log Book

Fourth Year MD Course

Faculty of Medicine and Surgery
      The Medical School
      University of Malta

       Student’s name:

                                  1
Welcome to your Paediatric Log Book
Children constitute approximately 20 per cent of the population and, although
most are healthy, childhood illnesses cover the entire spectrum of medical and
surgical subspecialties including some that are unique to paediatrics (e.g.
neonatology). Even diseases common to both adult and child health have
different manifestations, management and outcomes in children who should not
be approached as 'miniature adults.' Paediatrics is, therefore, an important and
independent subject that deals with child health comprehensively from the
trivial to the life-threatening, both in the acute and community setting, and
poses great challenges from a professional, ethical, social and academic point of
view. The fundamentals of Paediatrics should be established during your
clinical attachment in the Fourth Year of the Undergraduate Course. At the end
of this 7 week attachment you should be conversant with the more common
conditions affecting children, and have a working knowledge how to approach
and examine a sick child, plan investigations and organise management. An
overview of less common conditions, involving subspecialties that include
orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology and surgery is also recommended.

How to use this log book

This logbook is designed as a guide for the clinical attachment – the teaching
framework listed in the log book it is not intended to be comprehensive. You
will need to read around the subject and augment your knowledge base in
Paediatrics by means of self-directed learning, using core texts, e-learning, etc.
For more information please refer to the Department’s website on
www.um.edu.mt/ms/paediatrics.

The logbook provides details of the various placements that make up the
Clinical attachment in Paediatrics, including lectures, seminars and tutorials. It
is extremely important that you utilise your time appropriately during the
attachment, and you are strongly advised to spend a significant proportion of
your time seeing patients on the wards and in outpatients. Do not rely solely on
tutorials and, at your level and maturity, it is totally unacceptable to expect to be
completely spoon fed (this milestone is generally overcome by the age of 2-3
years). The logbook contains attendance forms for the various placements that
need to be signed by the tutor running each particular placement. Tutors will not
provide signatures ‘in retrospect’. Although you should strive to cover as much
clinical material as possible, we appreciate that this is difficult and have
provided a list of important topics and appropriate forms to document these
cases. Every student is expected to discuss and present at least two clinical cases
to their colleagues and a tutor and this should be documented in the appropriate
form.

The logbook is designed to help the student and, as such, should provide a
framework around which to plan your attachment in Paediatrics. It will need to
be handed in for assessment at the end of the attachment and will then be
returned to and kept by the student. Although the logbook will not contribute
directly toward the fourth or final examinations in Paediatrics, the standard or
otherwise will have a bearing in the event of any exceptionally good student
being considered for the Corinthia Prize in Paediatrics and, conversely, in those
whose performance is borderline between a pass or fail.
