					LAB 1: Introduction to Anatomy - Chapter 1 (McKinley)

Materials:
      Miscellaneous models & specimens
      Diagrams in the textbook
      You are also responsible for the information contained in the class syllabus, schedule(s) and
       lab protocol sheet

Procedure: Study the materials demonstrating the following concepts.

   1. Anatomical Position: Be able to describe and identify anatomical position

   2. Planes of Section:
       a. Coronal plane or Frontal plane
       b. Transverse plane, horizontal plane, or cross-section
       c. Sagittal planes
             1) Midsagittal or Median plane
             2) Parasagittal plane
       d. Oblique plane

   3. Directional Terms:
       a. Anterior/Posterior
       b. Dorsal/Ventral
       c. Superior/Inferior
       d. Cranial/Caudal
       e. Medial/Lateral
       f. Superficial/Deep
       g. Proximal/Distal
    4. Regional Terms:
        Identify the anterior and posterior regional terms given in your lecture text.
   5. Body Cavities:
       Locate the following structures, using the articulated skeleton, anatomical models, and
         figures in the textbook.
         • dorsal body cavity
                  cranial cavity
                  vertebral cavity
         • ventral body cavity
                  thoracic cavity
                         • pericardial cavity
                         • pleural cavity
                         • mediastinum
                  abdominopelvic cavity
                         • abdominal cavity
                         • pelvic cavity

6. Abdominopelvic regions and quadrants:
    Identify the following abdominopelvic regions. Use the figures in your textbook for this
     identification. Be able to give examples of organs located in each region.
     a. right hypochondriac region

     e. umbilical region
     f. left lumbar region
     g. right iliac region
     h. hypogastric region
     i. left iliac region

    Identify the following abdominopelvic quadrants. Use the figures in your textbook for
     this identification. Be able to give examples of organs located in each quadrant.
     a. right upper quadrant (RUQ)
     b. left upper quadrant (LUQ)
     c. right lower quadrant (RLQ)
     d. left lower quadrant (LLQ
7. Levels of Organization and Organ Systems:
     Identify the following organ systems. Use the figures in your textbook for this
       identification. Be able to list the major organs of each system, and the primary function
       of each system.
