2011 FESTIVAL

Welcome to Hamilton Competitions 2011 Festival. We are excited to bring you the 2011 Syllabus.
Please remember to check the dates, times and venues. Some have changed! Usually we run
through the first week of the July school holidays. This year our Festival runs for about ten days
from the first weekend. Dance, Piano and Orchestral Instruments start in the middle of the
holidays.

Our website has additional information. Please make sure you visit the website and if you need
extra entry forms you can find them there. www.hamiltoncompetitions.co.nz

Some entry fees and programme charges have changed. We have increased our charges because
of the rise in venue hire charges, printing and postage costs.

This year, Dance is distributing their Syllabus and Entry Forms by email. Next year, some of the
other disciplines will also use email. Please ensure that your up-to-date contact details are held by
Hamilton Competitions Society to ensure that you get your 2012 syllabus on time.

Last year we really enjoyed hosting a special event: the Festival for Children and Young Adults
with Special Needs. Their Festival was a highlight and provided us with a wonderful opportunity to
celebrate with these special people, their families and supporters. We encourage you to join their
special day this year, at St Andrews Presbyterian Church on Thursday, 14 th July.

We do get a huge influx of entries for some disciplines. Sometimes we have to close entries early.
To make sure you have a place, please enter well before the closing date.

Competitive Festivals provide a wonderful opportunity for us to share your performance gifts.
Developing performance skills will help in other aspects of your life as you grow and develop and
performing is integral to the performing arts. Please come and perform and bring your friends and
family.

A warm “Thank You” to all of those who help and support us: venues that hire their facilities at
concessional rates, administrators, convenors, adjudicators, printers, envelope fillers, cleaners and
caterers. Please extend your thanks to staff working at the Festival. They help to make it happen!

Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Inc.

Since 1966 the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Inc. (PACANZ) has acted
as the National Body for New Zealand’s Performing Arts Competition Societies. The PACANZ
objectives are:

 To be the representative national organisation for performing arts competition societies in New Zealand
 To encourage, foster and promote the practice and appreciation of the performing arts in New Zealand.

Mazda Foundation National Young Performer Awards

In 1977, PACANZ initiated the National Young Performer of the Year Award. This unique multi-
discipline award represents all of the art forms traditionally covered in the competitions
movement. For many of our competitors it is the pinnacle of their achievement, for others it is the
launching pad for future careers in the performing arts.

The 2011 Mazda Foundation National Young Performer Awards will be held in Invercargill on the
weekend of 14-16 October 2011. The awards are currently operated on a two year cycle, namely:

October 2011 Acoustic Instruments, Modern Dance, Highland National Dance, Speech & Drama
October 2012 Pianoforte, Ballet, Tap Dancing, Vocal

                                                                                                                 4
               NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS
             2011 CRITERIA FOR ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS
A. Competitors shall be 15 and under 21 years of age as at 1st October 2011

B. This award is open to competitors on any (non-electric) acoustic instrument. * (Class 195)

C. The programme should consist of three contrasting pieces from different periods of musical history,
i.e. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century or Contemporary.

D. Each competitor shall perform a programme with a maximum time of twenty minutes. There will be a
percentage mark for the complete programme. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit
is exceeded by 30 seconds or more.

E. There will be a semi-final of up to six competitors who will repeat their full programme, as set out in
     B. and C.

F. Three finalists will be chosen for the Final Award Concert and will perform one piece of the
adjudicator’s choice from their original programme.

G. Semi-finalists will be determined by marks gained in the preliminary round.

SOCIETY NOMINATION

Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, which shall be
selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A-D (above).

The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to
competently represent that society at the National Finals.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include;
 A demonstration of adequate preparation
 An authority of performance
 A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age
      group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO
nomination will be made.

The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards i.e.
$57.50 (incl GST)

Direct Entry
If the adjudicator considers that more than two competitors have reached a sufficient standard, the
adjudicator may report to the committee that those competitors should be given the option of a DIRECT
ENTRY. The DIRECT ENTRY competitor will be responsible for paying the full entry fee i.e. $115 (incl GST)

*NB as PACANZ runs a separate pianoforte competition in the following year, pianoforte is not
included under Acoustic Instruments.
