                               Letter of Authorization

BISM 2100 Students:

The purpose of this assignment is to integrate the material you have learned about
Business Information Systems into a coordinated report and presentation and to
allow students to focus on areas of intended major concentration. This report will be
web published and available for professor/employer viewing.

Your professor/employer has asked you for a detailed analysis of:

An Available Information System or software – a complete description of the
product – be thorough
 What business problem is the software designed to solve?
o How does it make doing business easier?
o How have others used it to improve performance?
           o
Who is it intended for (size of business, existing clients)?

What training is involved
o What level of technology experience is required

A Cost/Benefit Analysis of the Available System and its competitors
o Who are the primary competitors?
o What features differentiate the product?
o Is service, training, support provided?
o Why this product and not another?

A Detailed Demonstration of System Outputs – demos or snapshots with description
o Visually and narrative, describe the use of the software, its report
             capabilities, its web support etc.

Your Recommendations for System Adoption and Implementation
o After a thorough investigation your report – make a recommendation
based on your research and experience with the software.
o Analyze purchase and implementation considerations – include switchover
           and training
         o Predict outcomes of adoption

The information contained in your presentation will be used for a potential
purchase decision. You will therefore want to present a carefully researched,
thoughtfully written, and comprehensive formal report. Note, this is not a ‘sales
job’. Your conclusion may be that this software does not provide best fit for certain
organizations or that there are others that are more robust in their applications.
                                                                                                   iii

Abstract

The problem solved by the report is, is the Adobe Photoshop software worth the time and
effort learning to use? The group recommends Adobe Photoshop for use. The software
has a wide variety of tools and effects that make doing business easier. Adobe Photoshop
helps people and businesses communicate better through digital imaging, design, and
document technology platforms for consumers, creative professionals, and enterprises.
The software can be used to create advertisements to better market a company’s products
or services. Some training is required to use Photoshop software. Training can be
obtained from videos, online tips, classes, or books. In addition, Adobe Photoshop has
many competitors, but few with as many options for use.
                                                                                             1

Background and Problem

This report contains helpful information on Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop software is
used by small and large businesses worldwide to improve their business marketing
capabilities. This report discusses the results of an investigation conducted to solve the
following problem: Is Adobe Photoshop worth the time and effort learning to use? The
background section will include the scope, limitations, sources and methods of data
collection, and the report organization.

Scope of the Report

This report provides an overview of Adobe Photoshop and its uses. The report does not
include specifics on use of the product.

The report presents a preliminary look at the software. It does not provide all the
information for implementing the Adobe Photoshop software.

Limitations of the Report

The researchers lacked the sufficient time and tools needed to cover all the aspects of the
Adobe Photoshop software. There was some difficulty finding valid, dependable internet
resources.

Sources and Methods of Data Collection

The report used both primary and secondary data sources. The researcher consulted
internet sources and scholarly articles on Galileo. The primary internet sources being
used were www.adobe.com and www.abusinessresource.com.

In addition, two Adobe Photoshop users were interviewed. Photoshop user Tiffany Taber
and President of Northcutt Graphics, Floyd Northcutt. Their interviews can be viewed in
the appendix of the report.

Report Organization

The report has four major sections: Description of the Product, Training Involved, The
System and its Competitors, and Software Uses. These sections will provide information
on Adobe Photoshop.
                                                                                              2

                                    Adobe Photoshop
Description of the Product

Adobe is one of the world’s largest software companies, generating annual revenues
exceeding one billion dollars (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/main.html). Adobe
Photoshop helps people and a business communicate better through digital imaging,
design, and document technology platforms for consumers, creative professionals, and
enterprises but is it really worth the extra time and effort to learn to use the software? The
software can be used to create advertisements to better market a company’s products or
services (Taber, Tiffany). The Photoshop software allows creative editing to be done a lot
quicker than in past years before Photoshop existed (Northcutt, Floyd). Photoshop helps
businesses reflect the image that best profits them through custom editing and managing
of videos and photos. Adobe can be used to edit blemishes, scars, and even wrinkles from
photos. The software allows for people to create, publish, and print advertisements and
such using one all inclusive software system. In addition, the software is versatile enough
for use for anyone from a teenager perfecting their prom pictures to major corporations in
their advertising campaigns (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/main.html).

Training Involved

Adobe Photoshop requires some experience in design. Many features could be very hard
to use if the user does not know exactly what they want from the product (Northcutt,
Floyd). A class in graphics and photo editing is recommended. There are many books,
online classes, lectures, and virtual labs to help newcomers get acquainted with the
software. The software also usually contains a training CD
(http://www.abusinessresource.com/Software/Adobe/).

The System and its Competitors

The Photoshop offers many support options. There are a wide variety of books for
training. Also, at Adobe studio there are in depth tips for use in the software. Videos can
be purchased to view in the comfort of your own home to better use Adobe. Lastly,
classes taught by a certified instructor can be found in your area
(http://www.adobe.com/support/training.html).

Adobe has many competitors including Morpheus Software. Morpheus allows users to
edit photos and movies (htttp://www.morpheus.software.net). Other competitors include
Paint Shop Pro and Aldus. However, Photoshop’s revenues far exceed all competitors.
Photoshop has many more specific editing tools for the user’s needs. Adobe Photoshop
                                                                                          3

has a wide range of options and effects. Adobe has more options than its competitors
including extensive brush functions, file browser and hatching options, and more specific
tools which make creating tiled textures easier to create. Although the less excellent
features include lack of hotkey customization and that the software is still Mac-centric at
its core with emphasis on web-specific features instead of traditional ones (Lindsay,
Spencer, 11). Also, the function for graphing would be more useful if graphs could be
made in more than one format (Taber, Tiffany).

Software Uses

The software can be used to create advertisements to better market a company’s products
or services (Taber, Tiffany). The Photoshop software allows creative editing to be done a
lot quicker than in past years before Photoshop existed (Northcutt, Floyd). Photoshop
helps businesses reflect the image that best profits them through custom editing and
managing of videos and photos. Adobe can be used to edit blemishes, scars, and even
wrinkles from photos. The software allows for people to create, publish, and print
advertisements and such using one all inclusive software system. In addition, the software
is versatile enough for use for anyone from a teenager perfecting their prom pictures to
major corporations in their advertising campaigns
(http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/main.html). Photographers, web designers, and
graphic designers can use Adobe Photoshop. The software addresses the issues of file
management, photo retouching, and smarter output for the web. The software runs native
on Microsoft Windows XP and can be installed on web pages, cell phones, handheld
devices, or personal computers. The software has an enhanced file browser that can be
used to visually browse and retrieve images. With a painting engine the user can simulate
painting techniques. Also, the software includes a liquefy distorting tool and pattern
maker plug-in. Users can easily “heal” images by removing scratches, blemishes, scars,
wrinkles, and other imperfections. Projects can be organized by name, date, resolution,
and a number of other specifications. Additionally, the software now has a spell checker
(http://www.abusinessresource.com/Software/Adobe/).
                                                                                         4

Examples

Below is an example of a picture that has been edited using the software and the steps
used to achieve the effect.

Figure 1. Photo Editing (Eisman, Katrin, 2).

5 Steps for Picture Retouching:

   1. Assess the image.
   2. Remove the distractions.
   3. Reduce unwanted shadows.
   4. Evaluate the process.
   5. Refine the results.
                                                                                         5

Another example of the uses of Adobe Photoshop is depicted in the picture below
(Kachick, John, 8).

Figure 2. Image Creation

In this picture, the creator drew each color “plate” separately then assembled them in
Photoshop. The dissolve mode was used to create an aged look.

Conclusions and Recommendations

After a thorough investigation of Adobe Photoshop software, the group recommends the
software for use. Is the Adobe Photoshop software worth the time and effort to learn to
use? The software does require some training, but once the user learns how to use the
software it can be worth their time and effort. Marketers can receive more profit from the
higher quality editing that can be done with the software. Buyers can receive great
benefits from the software for a relatively small amount of money. In addition, Photoshop
is very easy to install in a matter of minutes.
                                                                                                  6

Appendix

Interview 1

Tiffany Taber, Graphic Design Artist, Cartersville, GA

    1) Do you use the Adobe Photo Shop and, if so, do you use it on an every day basis?
Yes, I am a Graphic Design Artist and I use Adobe Photo Shop almost every day.
    2) What are some of the tasks that you Photo Shop to do? Today I actually
incorporated two people into a photograph. They were not in the original picture
and they needed to be, so I took one picture and put them in the group photo. The
Photo Shop helped me in doing this.
    3) What are some other things that you do that you use Photo Shop to do? I use
Photo Shop to lay out advertisements.
    4) Are there any things that you wish that Adobe Photo Shop would do that it does
not do now to help you out? One thing, is when I use the brush palette to do
graphs, it only allows you to make a graph going in one direction. I wish that the
program would allow me to control the direction. Another thing is I wish you
could use spot colors like you can in Photo Illustrator.
    5) Are there any other recommendations that you would give to the developer of
Adobe Photo Shop?? I would also recommend that you can use Illustrator and
Editor all at once. I would like it more if you did not have to switch back and
       forth between the programs.
    6) On an overall basis, would you recommend using Adobe Photo Shop to anyone??
I use it and as long as you know the limitations before you use the software, it can
be helpful and get the job done. So, I guess I would recommend it to someone
       else.

Interview 2

1) What do you use Adobe Photo Editor to do ??
Color Corrections, Format Conversions and Photo Editing.
2) Does Adobe Photo Editor make your job easier??
Yes. In the old days, in order to do color corrections masks had to be made which took a lot of
time.

3) What problems have you run into with this software?
The only thing is that it it is raster based and not vector
4) Is the software hard to use?
Yes. You have to know what you are doing and or what you want.

5) What do you use Adobe Photo Editor to do??
See question 1
6) What is your job title & what all do you do??
                                                                      7
