 Regulations
 1. Only NASFT members may enter the Competition.
 2. Only complete, ready-to-sell products may be entered. Mock-up products will not be judged.
 3. Each company may submit up to five entries for a charge of $50 per entry. Five (5) is the maximum number of entries
    allowed per company for Part 1 of the Competition. Companies will be allotted another set of entries for Outstanding New
    Product 2007 (Part 2 of the Competition). (Details will be included in the Participation Packet you receive in May.)
 4. The same product may not be entered in more than one category. *See Question 2 in Frequently Asked Questions for one
    exception.
 5. Judges reserve the right to move products between categories as they see fit.
 6. Products cannot be returned and will be donated to a local food bank.

       Frequently Asked Questions
1. Should I send all of my entries in one box?
As long as you also include a completed Registration Form, Fact Sheets for each entry and payment in the same box. You can
also send multiple boxes, as long as the boxes are numbered and Box 1 includes your forms.

2. Can I enter the same product in more than one category?
No, with one exception. If you enter Product Line, you may take up to four products from that entry and submit additional sam-
ples of each in up to four other categories. You cannot otherwise put the same product (even if it is a different size) in more
than one category.

3. Can I enter the same category more than once?
Yes, you can enter the same category up to five times with different products. Be aware, however, that your products will be
competing against each other if they are entered in the same category.

4. What if I want to enter Product Line, but I only have five products?
You will not be eligible for Product Line unless you sell a minimum of six (6) products under the same brand name.

5. I have a brand new product that I want to enter for Outstanding New Product 2007. When will I be able to submit it?
Submissions for Outstanding New Product 2007 will only be accepted during Part 2 of the Product Awards Competition
(June 6-13). You will receive a Participation Packet in the mail by May 15 containing all the forms and instructions you need to
enter your new product(s). To be eligible for this category, the product must have been introduced to the market after July 11,
2006.

6. I have a new product that I would like to enter in the Competition. Can I enter it now into one of the Part 1 categories
and then enter it again in June for Outstanding New Product 2007?
No, you must choose whether you want to enter a new product into a Part 1 category now or whether you want to wait and
enter it into Outstanding New Product 2007 during Part 2 of the Competition in June. If you enter a product in Part 1, you
cannot re-enter that same product in Part 2. Duplicate entries will be disqualified. (Product Line is the one exception. Refer to
Question 2 above for additional information.)

7. I want to enter Outstanding Innovation in Packaging Design or Function. Do I enter my entire product line so its pack-
aging can be evaluated as a whole?
No, the judges will only evaluate individual products in this category, not complete lines. Send only one sample for each entry
in this category.

8. Can I enter my product in the Competition if it isn’t on the market by the deadline of April 11 but will be ready for
sale by the Summer Fancy Food Show in July?
No, the judges must assess your product when it is ready to sell only. Judges will not consider products that are mock-ups. You
should wait and enter your new product in Part 2 of the Competition (June 6-13).

9. Can I send my payment in after the products arrive?
No, you must include payment with your entries to qualify.

10. If I have a product that needs to be prepared, should I send prepared product with the packaged product?
No, the NASFT hires professional chefs to prepare the products according to packaging instructions.

11. Can I send frozen or refrigerated products?
Yes, just make sure to mark the outside of the box clearly to indicate that the contents are perishable. Send only one sample
for each perishable entry.

12. Do I have to exhibit at the Fancy Food Show to participate in Product Awards?
No, but you must be a NASFT member to participate.

13. Will the products I submit be tasted?
The judges will taste all the products except for entries in the following three categories: Food Gift, Non-Food Specialty Item and
Innovation in Packaging Design or Function. In those categories, the judges will analyze entries without tasting.

14. How many samples do I need to send?
Send TWO samples of each shelf-stable product you are entering; send ONE sample of each perishable (refrigerated or frozen)
product you are entering. Exception: Submissions in the following five categories require ONLY ONE sample, even if they are
shelf-stable: Product Line, Food Gift, Non-Food Specialty Item, Foodservice Product and Innovation in Packaging Design or
Function.

15. Will I get feedback from the judges about my products?
Yes! For the first time, judges will be required to fill out Feedback Cards for each entry rating the product in five key areas—
quality, innovation, packaging, ingredient profile and pricing. These feedback cards will be mailed to you by May 31.

16. When will I hear if my product has been chosen as a Finalist?
All Finalists will be notified by fax and/or email by Monday, April 23.

17. How does the judging process work?
Step One: The NASFT selects nine respected professionals from around the country from different segments of the industry, such
as buyers from specialty food stores, supermarkets and natural food markets as well as chefs, caterers and food writers.

Step Two: The judges come to the NASFT offices in New York City and spend four days judging the anticipated 3,500 prod-
ucts. One category at a time, a team of professional chefs prepares all the entries and presents them to the judges for tasting.
The judges taste and assess each product, taking into account quality, innovation, salability, packaging, ingredient profile and
retail price.* Each judge fills out a Feedback Card for each entry noting the product’s strengths and weaknesses and then votes
for the Finalists in that category. The products with the most votes become Finalists.

Step Three: Finalists will be notified via fax and/or email at the conclusion of judging. A list of the Finalists will be published on
Specialty Food News the week of April 23 and will be sent to all NASFT members by April 24.

Step Four: The Final Judging will take place at the Summer Fancy Food Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Sunday,
July 8. An estimated 200 specialty food professionals from around the country will come to analyze, taste and vote for the win-
ning products, considering the same criteria that the initial nine judges used in the first round of judging. Winners will be
announced at a special presentation ceremony TK.

*Entries in the following categories will be analyzed but not tasted: Food Gift, Non-Food Specialty Item and Innovation in
Packaging Design or Function.
