									                                                        Our 175th Year

          October 10, 2006

          Dear Employees,

With each new day on the job, I learn a little more about the wonderful people who work here at
The State Journal-Register and The Courier. In addition to your hard work and dedication, I am
impressed with the generosity of our employees in supporting charities serving our community
          and the world beyond.

Over the past eight years, our employees have donated more than $270,000 during our annual
Combined Charities Campaign. Last year alone our employees donated nearly $38,000 – more
than $100 per employee and up 4 percent from the year before.

Working in the news business, we report on a wide range of issues facing our community.
We cover personal tragedies as well as individual triumphs over adversity. Sometimes the news
can seem overwhelming and the stories heartbreaking. But often we report on the individuals
and organizations devoted to making this a better community and a better world for each of us.
We profile the individuals who give of themselves without the promise of a reward or
          acknowledgement.

In many ways your generosity comes from that same selfless commitment, the desire to make a
difference in the lives of others. No fanfare, no special recognition, just an understanding that
          we can make a difference.

As publisher, I am honored to join with you in this annual drive. Whatever you care about the
most, the Combined Charities Campaign is an effective vehicle for lending your support to a
solution. Whether it is providing affordable health care, assisting a family in crisis, revitalizing a
neighborhood, providing relief to victims of a natural disaster or supporting critical medical
research, your generosity can and does make a difference.

Together we can Change Tomorrow Today.

          Sincerely,

          Sue Schmitt
          Publisher
