     Revised 8/10/08
Welcome by Band Directors
2008-2009 Marching Band Members and Parents:

Thank you for being an important part of the 2008 Marching Band. We know that your active
participation will reward you in many ways throughout your tenure at MHS. The fun you have
and the friendships you make will be valued for years to come.

The Minnetonka Marching Band, in our fifth year of competition, is a growing organization
committed to excellence. Marching Band, unlike other organizations, relies heavily on each
individual. You are an integral component in our drill formations and our music executions, thus
your attendance and participation is of the greatest importance. Your hard work and dedication
has a direct correlation to our end product!

We applaud your decision to join us for another great year. This year’s show, “The Mask of
Zorro,” will be an exciting, crowd-pleasing event. We know you will enjoy it!

Again, thanks for being an integral part of our organization. We look forward to another great
season.

Musically,

Paul Rosen
Miles Mortensen

Participation and Attendance
The 2008-2009 Marching Band Calendar is included in this handbook for use in planning your family
schedule. Each band student is extremely important to the success of the Marching Band. We must be
able to count on 100% attendance at all performances and rehearsals. Each student has a spot written
specifically for him or her in the show, so when even one player is absent from a performance or
rehearsal, he or she leaves an empty spot in our formations. Students may not be absent from
performances. In the event of a family emergency, PARENTS, please call the band office as soon as
possible.

Student job commitments are NOT reasons for an excused absence from band performances or
rehearsals! Many band students work and participate successfully in band. We suggest that all working
band students take a copy of the Marching Band Calendar to his/her employer and clear all band
performances and rehearsals. Ninety-nine percent of employers are very understanding, and are flexible
if they know of band commitments well in advance. Please work with employers to clear the night
rehearsals. These evening rehearsals are scheduled during only 9 weeks of the school year. (The
Band Directors will be glad to talk to employers to validate student commitment.)

Personal Practice
All students should be practicing their instrument at home outside of marching band rehearsal. The
rehearsals are designed to bring all of the individual pieces and band members together - personal practice
at home (aided by sectionals with other students) is the time students memorize their parts and perfect the
elements of their music and instrument technique. Parents; you should hear practicing at home - every
member always has something to practice!

Lettering Policy
There are two ways to letter in Marching Band at Minnetonka High School:

    1. If you are a member of a curricular band, you will be governed by the co-curricular lettering
policy that is included with the course syllabus. Please refer to that document for guidance.

    2. Students who are members of the Marching Band only and are not participants in the curricular
band program, may receive a letter after 3 successful seasons of marching band. A successful
season is defined as being free of any attendance or discipline issues.

Students wishing to receive their letter after 3 seasons, should deliver a letter of application to the band
directors’ office listing the seasons of their successful participation. The letter should be delivered to
Miles Mortensen in the Band Office (Rm. 1111) prior to May 1, 2009. All awards are given at the end of
the school year. All questions regarding the awards program should be directed to Miles Mortensen at
Miles.Mortensen@minnetonka.k12.mn.us.
Student Behavior
Marching Band students represent the Minnetonka High School at performances and competitions and are
expected to maintain very high standards. The Band Directors expect courteous and polite behavior at all
times. Students must adhere to all Minnetonka student policies and Minnesota State High School League
guidelines. There is zero tolerance for alcohol, drugs, and smoking.

Band Camp
Marching Band Camp is scheduled for August 13-21, and August 25-27. At Band Camp students will
learn marching basics, the music, and the drill for the band show – and have a lot of fun! The first week
of band camp (Aug. 13-17, 2008) will take place at the Koinonia Retreat Center near Annandale,
Minnesota. Additional information regarding Koinonia can be found on the MHS Band Booster website,
www.minnetonkabandboosters.org, or at www.koinoniaretreatcenter.org. The remaining days of
Marching Band Camp will take place at Minnetonka High School. Attendance at all practices is
mandatory. Marching, music sectionals, and guard practices will be held at the discretion of the band
staff and section leaders.

Band Uniforms
Marching Band Uniforms include: bib overalls, jacket, hat, plume, marching shoes, black socks, and
black gloves. Students are fitted for the overalls, jacket, hat, and shoes on or before the first day of Band
Camp. The overalls, jacket, hat and plumes are school items and are used year after year. Shoes and
gloves must be purchased by each student, and are available through the band program. Students must
provide their own black socks. It is important for students to have all pieces of the uniform at each and
every performance. If a student misplaces gloves or socks, and replacement items are supplied by the
Band Directors, the student will be charged $5 for each.

Uniforms are stored at school, on hangers and in boxes labeled with individual student numbers. Plumes
are stored separately in a plume box. Students are responsible for proper hanging of their uniforms and
storage of hats after use. Students should inform a parent volunteer if their uniform is in need of repair
during the season. Uniforms will be dry cleaned at the end of the season.

In addition to the formal uniform, each student must purchase a Marching Band T-shirt, which is
designed with the music theme of the season. (T-shirts are ordered at the time of registration.) Students
must wear these t-shirts with blue jeans at competitions after the performance is completed, and at other
informal events.

Performances
The Marching Band will perform at home football games, competitions, the Youth in Music Festival, the
Prep Bowl, and at the Excelsior Halloween Parade. Please check the calendar at the end of this booklet
for dates and times. All performances are mandatory for all band and color guard members. Several
parent volunteers are needed at each performance to help with uniform management, loading and
unloading the trailer, moving instruments onto the field, etc. Please sign up on the volunteer sheets if you
are able to assist -- we really need your help!
Football Games
The Marching Band performs at all home football games and championship games. The band plays
during the first half of the game from the stands and performs the field show during half time. Please
refer to the Marching Band Calendar for report times on game days for band members. Students are
responsible for bringing black socks, black gloves, band shoes, and instrument, or guard uniform, for each
game. Upon arrival, students should gather their uniform from the cart and dress for the game. Parents
will be available to help.
Football games are fun, and we are there to support the team. Band members should exhibit proper
performance etiquette at all times. Band members can stand up and YELL and SCREAM in support of
the team throughout the game, but should always remain in their appointed “spot.” It is important to
remain alert, since the band will be surrounded by a lot of expensive equipment that will need to be ready
to play at a moment’s notice. Parents are encouraged to attend home football games to support the band -
- and the football team, too!
After the half time performance, the band marches directly to the band room. The band members change
out of their uniforms and are free to go once their uniform is properly hung and returned to its correct
location on the uniform cart.

Competitions
In addition to playing at football games, the Marching Band enters marching competitions with other high
school marching bands, and participates in other performances. Specific information about each
competition and performance follows. Family members are encouraged to attend competitions to cheer
on the band. (There may be an admission charge.) Show your spirit by wearing Tonka apparel or other
blue clothing. Look for the Minnetonka “M” in the stands -- it’s more fun when we all sit together!

Competition days are long and fun – for students and volunteers. Students rehearse at school before the
competition, and volunteers arrive prior to departure to assist with uniforms and loading the equipment.
As with football games, students are expected to bring black socks, black gloves, band shoes and
instrument.
Students should be in the band room ready to play by the posted “Report Time” for each scheduled
competition. The exact schedule for competition days is subject to change. Students may dress in part
or all of their uniform before leaving school for competitions; they should bring clothes to change into
after the performance, including their field show t-shirt.

The marching band will perform at the following four competitions:
Coon Rapids Cardinal Fall Classic Saturday, September 6

Minnetonka Band Boosters
The Band Boosters support the band programs at Minnetonka High School through volunteer efforts,
fundraising, and public relations. Membership is open to all; marching band parents are encouraged to
participate. Without the hard work and dedication of the parents, the band program at Minnetonka could
not be as successful and productive as it is. There are numerous areas in which interested parents can be
involved in supporting the activities of the band. General meetings of the boosters are held throughout the
school year. For information regarding membership, please refer to the website,
www.minnetonkabandboosters.org, or contact Becky Debol, MHS Band Booster Treasurer at
becky.debol@mchsi.com.
