Graphic design, computer
graphics and design methodology
Background to graphics and how to
think when using computer graphics as a design tool.
BBC2 programme
Into Print - Graphics
(First broadcast 1990)
Shows impact of computers in graphic design, at a time when it was really taking off, from the late 1980s.
Also brings out important issues of graphic design in general and the role of the computer as a tool.
30 minute video

CD from Carole’s office
Points from the video:
Why?
– always question what you do.
Is what you are doing appropriate for the intended market?
Does it add to the design?
Does it add to the way the design communicates?
What are you trying to communicate?
– this is almost more important than
how
you are trying to communicate.
Collect visual bits – make a scrap book.
- useful source book for inspiration
You don’t have to draw everything.
Scan things in
then in graphics program
- manipulate - trace over
(then delete scanned image)
Sources of illustrations – for scanning and inspiration Magazines and catalogues
(some available in Carole’s office)
Tear sheets/mood sheets
Collect images and bits of images
that you respond to positively and negatively when thinking about a particular design issue.
Tear sheets/mood sheets
This can then help you decide on textures colours feel etc (both what to use and what to reject) – i.e. create the mood for the project.
Often see tear sheets/mood sheets being used on TV design programmes, e.g. BBC Changing Rooms, Channel 4 Property Ladder.
Watch any TV design-related programmes
- they will all help you start thinking about design in new ways - if only to start seeing what to reject!
BBC4 has many good design and design history programmes.
Point from video:
Computers let you change things very quickly – use this to encourage experimentation.
Point from video:
Computer can be used too much – you are more likely to want a human feel to the final design than machine made.
Use traditional art techniques if the computer can’t
do what you want
- then scan in image
– but obviously for the module the computer will have to have a role!
