Spiderman and his Textile Adventure
One Day Spiderman was taking a shower as usual, with his super pants on
After Spiderman got out of the shower, He had to decide what shirt to wear
Unfortunately, he had not listened to his art teacher when he had taught him about the difference between swatches and regular shirts soooo….
Spiderman tried the swatch on but it was hard to fit on and he didn’t feel like it covered him very well ….His friends didn’t think so either….some of them laughed even, which is NOT nice
Finally a friend told him that a swatch is not a shirt but simply a little sample of bigger cloth and that a person who sews or a textile artist uses a roll of fabric to make a shirt
Can someone tell me what a swatch is?
YESSSSIIREEEEE, a swatch is a little SAMPLE of a bigger sheet of cloth
With his new found knowledge, Spiderman was then able to do his normal superhero-ly duty again….yeaaaah!
Textiles is the art of using fabric
• Can you think of anything that is made of fabric? (write list below)
Textile possibilities
-stuffed animals -quilts -clothing (shirts, pants, socks, etc.)
Gustav Klimt
• He is an artist known for painting patterned textiles • His friend designed loose-fitting, colorfully-patterned clothing and Gustav liked to paint them
Look at all the different patterns Klimt uses!!!!
Do you see any repeated patterns in these paintings?
You know what else is a form of Textile Art besides the ones we talked about before?
HOT AIR BALLOONS!!!!!
Hot air balloons are made of fabric and as you can see have many different designs on them
What we are going to do is use patterns like Klimt did and put them into the different sections of the hot air balloons that we are going to make….yeaaah!
A Pattern is something repeated
• Soooo if you want you can take something you like and then repeat that object in order to have a pattern in a section of your hot air balloon
Don’t Cut the Balloon or the Pattern Squares out!!!
Draw Different Patterns in each of your Worksheet Squares
• Use a Klimt-like pattern in one of the squares • Decide on at least two shapes to use in each pattern and then repeat
Here are some patterns I came up with. Remember, if you come up with a basic design for something you like, such as candy, or an alien (like I made on the left side of this sheet) you can make a pattern from that too.
Get a Hot Air Balloon Worksheet
Don’t Cut the Balloon or the Pattern Squares out!!!
Grab a tempera cake palette, a cup of water, a brush and bring that over and think about what you what you want to paint into each segment of the balloon.
You can choose to paint in a basic pattern like I did here or you can paint a different color in each spot
Use the ideas from your pattern design square worksheet and then put one of them in each section of hot air balloon….If you think of one you like better, you can do that too
Choose your favorite patch of patterning and cut that rectangle out. You will be using that for the basket that holds your person below the hot air balloon.
Now that you have your design on your balloon completely done, you can now cut it out.
Now you can get either a guy or girl cutout and put that behind the basket so you know how much of your person will show. Then, draw the face, hair, and maybe another pattern on your person’s shirt
Now color in your man or lady and place him/her into the “basket”
Now your design is complete, but you still need to add string or else your man/lady would come to an unfortunate falling end
Now, take string and measure out the approximate length it needs to be to go from the balloon to your basket and cut it there with extra, so that you can tape it on later
Turn your balloon, basket, and person around and then place the strings connecting the basket and balloon where you want them and then tape them on.
Then Lastly, staple the parts that you taped so that the string and person cut-out are reinforced on
Now hold your balloon up to make sure your string is attached correctly. NOW YOU ARE DONE!!!!
