1 Binary University College Report on Binary Students’ view of Binary Facilities Terms of Reference This report was prepared to throw more light on the facilities provided by Binary University College and also to gather the views of the students. The report was requested by Miss Parames of the Business school of Binary University College. It was prepared by Chaklader Raj Mahtab, Binary University College, Year 1, and Semester 3 and was submitted to Miss Parames on the 2nd of April, 2008. Procedure 1. Twenty randomly selected students were chosen to fill out questionnaires 2. Further interviews were conducted while students filled up questionnaires Findings 1. Questionnaires 1.1 All questionnaires were returned mentioning that Library services are average. 70% mentioned that they don’t always get the materials they look for. 30% students mentioned library’s overall performance is very poor. 1.2 Students hold a view that digital lab services are to be improved. A staggering 50% of the survey population think its services are very poor. Students always don’t get the articles using the emerald database which is college subscribed. 1.3 Only 30% of the sample survey students were staying or stayed before in the College Hostel. Most of them have an opinion that hostel services are to be improved with more facilities with reduced expenses. 1.4 About half of the tenants of the hostel believe Hostel coordinator’s office’s service is less than average. 2 1.5 Business students are not much satisfied with their department’s service where students from IT & Accounting departments reported that their schools are very friendly. 1.6 Most of the students feel that their respective coordinator’s offices are serving them good, 30% reported coordinators should not change so frequently. 1.7 40% of the sample survey students think finance department’s performance is average and 30% think the department understands about their problems. 1.8 Above 80% students find that most of the lecturers are friendly & encouraging and 30% of them think all of the lectures are encouraging. None of them feels lecturers are discouraging. 1.9 About 40% students answered they find Binary campus very lively and active and 60% of them think campus environment is dull. 1.10 Almost all of the students responded that Binary should have its own parking facilities and they are willing to pay for the parking as well. 1.11 Half of the sample population responded that there is not enough facilities in the gymnasium where the other half commented the facilities should be improved. 1.12 It was considered by 60% that the college canteen should try to provide diverse food items. 1.13 70% students recommended for a College bus service throughout the major roads in Puchong. 1.14 Almost all of the students hold a strong view that if binary had its own campus with more outdoor activities it would be a more interesting college to study in. 2. Interviews In a close interview with the sample survey students while performing the survey the facts raised: 2.1 Students find it difficult to find appropriate materials from the library or from the digital library as there are insufficient books or virus affected computers. Students 3 made their suggestions to upgrade the digital lab and provide more novels and books in the library. 2.2 Students consider the hostel rental as higher than private apartments in the same building, most of them suggested hostel expenditure to be reduced. 2.3 While interviewing a few of the students expressed their feeling about not being recognized by the lecturers. 2.4 There is a strong feeling of despair can be noticed while interview was going on about the fact that Binary has still not moved to its proposed campus. 2.5 Business department was considered as the poorest service provider and time consuming among all the departments of the college. Conclusion 1. Digital library computers are virus infected or malfunctioning. 2. More books & materials are required in the library. 3. Hostels services are below standard and comparatively expensive. 4. Business department’s information section is inefficient 5. Limited campus activities and outdoor facilities. 6. No college bus service. 7. Gymnasium is poorly equipped. 8. The canteen is not providing diverse food items 4 Recommendations 1. Buy more books for the library and install updated antivirus systems in the digital lab. Get another affiliation with online library database website. 2. Librarian and coordinators must not change frequently, make their jobs permanent 3. Improve the information section of business department by building a computerized database of the student files. 4. Buy new beds, closets and kitchen accessories for the current hostel tenants. Consider if there is any way to reduce hostel costs. 5. Consider of launching a college bus service throughout Bandar Puchong primarily by buying at least two buses. 6. Immediately provide students with information and explanation of current progress of binaries proposed campus.
