					                                     Presidents’ Message
Daniel T. Lichter, Rural Sociological Society
Welcome to Boise and the first-ever joint meetings of the Rural
Sociological Society and the Community Development Society! This
year’s program has an especially exciting and diverse line-up of plenary
speakers, paper sessions, panels, and posters devoted to changing rural
society and public policy. The program theme highlights the new rural-
urban interface and the shared destinies of rural and urban people and
places. In fact, some of the most pressing social problems confronting
America and the rest of the world involve rural people and places. Green
jobs, energy, agro-food systems, climate change, recreational
development, new immigrant destinations, devolution, and political and
economic dislocations are redefining rural communities. Rural sociologists have a lot to say
about these topics. So enjoy the program -- and Boise!

                                                                                             Daniel T. Lichter
                                                                                               RSS President

Silent Auction to Benefit the CDS Endowment
The CDS Endowment was created to help community development professionals attend CDS
conferences, benefit from enhanced conference programs, further their academic studies, and receive
other kinds of professional development support. To help build the Endowment, the 2011 CDS
conference will feature the 8th Annual Silent Auction of items which exemplify our members’ local
communities, economies, and crafts. The auction is open to all conference attendees. Please be
generous in your bidding – the aim of the auction is to benefit the CDS Endowment!

Items you may have brought to donate to the auction must be checked in at the registration area and
we will ask for a short description and an approximate value. Items will be on display near the
registration area throughout the conference, each with a bid sheet for people to write their name and
their bid for the item. The hours are as follows:
         Thursday, July 28 – 9:00 am – 6:00 pm
         Friday, July 29 – 7:00 am - 6:30 pm
         Saturday, July 30 – 7:00 am - 4:30 pm

If you make a bid on an item, be sure to circulate through the auction area regularly, to see if you have
been outbid by someone else; so you can make another bid!

A few selected items donated for the auction will be offered in a live auction event at the CDS Annual
Awards Banquet, which begins Saturday, July 30 at 6:00 pm. At the conclusion of the banquet, the
highest bidders will be announced, and they will be asked to collect their items and make payment at
that time. While you do not need to attend the banquet to win an item, if you are the highest bidder
you will be responsible for payment and for the cost of shipping the item if you do not claim it before
the end of the conference on Sunday, July 31.

Thanks for supporting the CDS Endowment!

                       Location: Kestrals
Presider: Daniel T. Lichter, Cornell University
Description: This full-length documentary tells the story of the most brutal, most expensive,
and one of the largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the history of the
United States. By weaving together the personal stories of the individuals, the families, and the
town directly affected by the events of May 12, 2008, the film presents the human face of the
issue of immigration reform and serves as a cautionary tale against abuses of constitutional
                          human rights.
