Dear Friends,

on behalf of the entire company, welcome to the 76th season of the
ogunquit Playhouse and this spectacular production of Mel Brooks’
The Producers.

If you have met the members of the Board of Directors and staff of the

                                                                                                                Jay Goldsmith Photography
Playhouse, you already know that our passion and commitment goes
very deep, to not only our theatrical productions, but to the building of
our community ties and historical preservation as well.

While we could have rested well on the laurels of the past, this
tireless collection of community leaders and theatre professionals is
constantly looking for ways to strengthen and enhance the long-term
positive impact the ogunquit Playhouse has on the lives of the
residents and visitors of northern new england.

The most significant enhancement of this season is the launching of the Education Committee’s School Group
Performances for both Fiddler on the Roof and Les Misérables. For the first time in the history of the Ogunquit
Playhouse, our Community relations Department (also new as of last year) is welcoming busses of school
groups to these two productions. hundreds of students attended the June 11th performance of Fiddler on the
Roof; they had the opportunity to participate in a Q & a with the cast following the show, classroom instruction
with study guides provided by the Playhouse education Department before arriving, and wrote reviews of the
show as their classroom assignment when they returned to their schools.

Teachers were thrilled with their students’ positive response to the show. We are looking forward to greeting
hundreds more for our two student performances of Les Misérables in september and october.

With declining funds for arts in the schools and the stretching of our social service agencies to make ends meet,
these students are not able to pay what it costs the Playhouse to have them attend a performance. however,
we know our future cultural landscape depends on these children, so we must find a way to introduce them to
the magic of live theatre, even while taking a loss to do so.

When you see a popular show selling out with tickets hard to come by–and at the same time–the Playhouse
seeking donations, I urge you to please keep these programs in mind. We must find ways to reach out to these
audiences, who could not join us otherwise, enhance our region’s arts education and preserve this wonderful
institution for many more generations to come.

If I leave you here with one thought as we move forward into the third quarter century of the ogunquit
Playhouse, it would be...participate.

Let us know what you think–you can always reach the staff through our web site. Join our Guild and volunteer–
you’ll make wonderful new friends while working on fun and entertaining projects that continue to improve the
fabric of the Playhouse. Be sure to help my office select the season’s shows by filling out the Show Selection
survey. Join our membership and support the physical well being of this national historic register building and
the Community Relations education and social service activities–and finally…spread the word. Help fill the
school groups! Call your school or PTa. Let your friends, neighbors, local press and legislators know how much
you care about the Playhouse–Your Playhouse.

Thank you again for joining us and helping us keep the lights shining brightly for generations to come.
