                                        Part II
G. Translate into Bulgarian ONE of the
    following texts.
        1. Historically, genetically modified foods have been developed as
responses to important problems such as the degradation of the environment
due to wasteful and antiquated farming methods and the spectre of
widespread hunger. Genetically modified crops are more resilient,
demanding fewer pesticides and less water , which alleviates stresses
imposed on the surrounding environment. They also help relieve pressure
faced by farmers, who are constantly being forced to produce more food
while reducing the amount of water for irrigation; this is particularly
crucial for farmers in developing countries whose resources are limited.
Foods can be modified so as to increase their content of essential
proteins, vitamins and minerals, thus making them more nutritious. Addition
or removal of certain genes constitutes another important modification
that helps make foods more durable so that minimal damage is incurred
                                                   8
when foods are in transfer or in storage; such foods are also more likely
to retain their colour and, what is even more important, their nutrients.
Ultimately, consumers enjoy a better and more affordable product and
producers and retailers suffer fewer losses through spoilage and waste.

         2. Gravity-stimulating trousers designed to maintain normal blood
flow in astronauts have given doctors an idea which could lead to a new
way of identifying potential stroke victims. Although people can take
medication to lower high blood pressure, many still have strokes.
Sometimes this happens because blood pressure drops too low, especially at
night, when sluggish blood flow can lead to clots..
J.A.,a neurologist at Wake Forest University Medical Center in North
Carolina, has developed a test who might be at risk – basing his idea on
the fact that in orbit astronauts’ “space trousers” are hooked up to a
vacuum to stimulate gravity by pulling blood down to their legs.
In the study ten patients placed their legs in a vacuum drum while
the scientist measured blood pressure and carotid artery flow.
He also did an EKG and a brain scan to visualise the brain’s blood flow.
The vacuum produced higher blood pressure in the legs while lowering it in
the upper body and head and gradually lowering the blood pressure in the
brain.
What the doctors are looking for are the symptoms. Patients are
awake throughout the experiment and can tell them when they feel dizzy or
nauseated. This allows the team to determine the lowest safe blood
pressure and thus the stroke risk for each patient.
