Food Play – A Cultural Arts Assembly:

Last Thursday, February 26, all Hillside students saw Food Play, a national award winning
theater show that teaches kids about nutrition, self esteem, and health in a fun, upbeat way. The
goal of the assembly was to get kids excited about choosing healthy snacks, eating a good
breakfast, reading food labels, and being physically active every day. Click here for tips on
making fruits and veggies fun for kids.

Here are a few interesting facts:

 A can of soda contains 10 teaspoons of sugar

 Diet soda contains artificial sweeteners and chemicals

 The best drinks are water, 100% fruit juice, seltzer and milk

It is important not to believe everything we see and hear on TV. The best way to know if
something is healthy – read the ingredients! It is not necessary to abstain, but you definitely
want to limit unhealthy food and drinks. Our children learned many important nutrition facts from
this assembly and you can reinforce this lesson by including them in the grocery shopping and
meal preparation. For more information, log onto www.foodplay.com.

This Cultural Arts Assembly is another example of Your PTA Dollars at Work.

Make A Difference With Only An Hour Or Two:

Be A Poll Watcher in the April 21 School Election…One of the Most Important Events of the
School Year!

On Tuesday, April 21, 2009, polls will be open from 1:00pm–9:00pm for citizens of Livingston to
vote in the School Election for the proposed School Budget and to elect a candidate to the
Board of Education.

Each year volunteers serve as Poll Watchers. A Poll Watcher is a registered voter in Livingston
who observes voting in an election in order to ensure that election rules are followed, helps
voters to identify their voting district based on street address, and may make phone calls to
remind voters to come to the polls.

To volunteer for an hour or two between 1:00pm and 9:00pm on April 21, or to get more
information, please contact Hillside School’s Budget Task Force Representatives, Cesar and
Pasqua Garcia at pasqua.garcia@verizon.net by Wednesday, March 4.

Celebrate Hillside’s Cultural Diversity:

Multi-Cultural Night is Thursday, April 30

This year’s Multi-Cultural night is approaching and we need you to share your cultural heritage!
Hillside’s families are fortunate to have such a great variety of backgrounds. You can help
continue the understanding and mutual appreciation by setting up a country display table or
performing in the show. Please contact Garine Isassi 973.740.0118 garine@rocketmail.com or
Anju Singh 973.992.4235 anjusingh@gmail.com.

Art Appreciation Volunteers Needed:

This year, Art Appreciation is teaming up with Multicultural Night for a beautiful display of Art
from around the world. We are looking for volunteers to help with Art Appreciation lessons in
the classroom. If you are available to lead a lesson in March or April in your child's class, please
email Kathleen Small at smallbk@aol.com.

Reflect On This…

Kids can walk around trouble if there is someplace to walk to and someone to walk with.
