               MISSION STATEMENT

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons’ mission is to
promote the highest standards for gynecologic surgical
care for women in a safe, effective and ethical manner.

To realize this mission, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons has
as its principles:

1. To promote the acquisition of knowledge and the improvement
   of skills in gynecologic surgery.

2. To enhance the understanding of gynecology and gynecologic
surgery through basic and clinical research.

3. To be a source of public and professional information.

                                          WELCOME FROM
                                           THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Society of Gynecologic surgeons, welcome to the 34th
Annual Scientific Meeting. Andy Walter and his Program Committee
have put together a wonderful schedule of events. There is a major
emphasis on the use of mesh in prolapse surgery. We will hear multiple
oral and video presentations on the topic. An entire scientific session is
devoted exclusively to the complications of mesh in vaginal prolapse
surgery. A half-day postgraduate course, “Meshes and grafts in
reconstructive vaginal surgery” will be given the afternoon prior to the
ASM. Importantly, the Systematic Review Group (SRG) will present its
work and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on its first annual
topic, Mesh & Grafts in Vaginal Prolapse Surgery, in a panel
presentation/discussion and at the postgraduate course.

Tom Julian has selected several superb films from an unusually large
group of high quality videos which will be interspersed throughout the
scientific sessions. Some of the other excellent videos will be shown in
the 1st SGS Videofest. The academic roundtable breakfast discussions
offer topics of interest for everyone facilitated by members particularly
knowledgeable in that field. Hope you were able to get your top choices
in early!

                                     ii
I am delighted that Dr. Norman Gant, Executive Director of the American
Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology accepted our invitation to deliver the
2008 TeLinde Lecture entitled, “The Historical Evolution of
Urogynecology.”

The Society has placed new and prioritized emphasis on inclusiveness –
we will do all we are able to facilitate any interested Gynecologist to both
attend SGS meetings and apply for membership. The application
process itself has become much more user-friendly and streamlined with
the adoption of an online form. Non-oral posters for the first time are
being allowed to fulfill the application requirement of presentation at an
ASM.

The SGS is increasingly realizing its mission statement, “to promote the
highest standards for gynecologic surgical care for women in a safe,
effective and ethical manner” by actively promoting education and
research. The research committee has established two major initiatives:

• The Systematic Review Group whose annual project is selecting
a topic of importance, performing a systematic review of the
world’s literature and from this, creating evidence-based Clinical
        Practice Guidelines.
• The Fellows’ Pelvic Research Network (FPRN) is a group of
FPMRS fellows who perform multi-center pelvic floor research to
improve collaboration and ability among fellows as they increase
the fund of knowledge in female pelvic floor disorders.

Please enjoy yourselves here in Savannah. Be part of the golf and
kayaking events, sample the town’s famous cuisine, hang-out with old
and new GYN friends and learn what’s hot and what’s not in pelvic
surgery.

Best Regards,

                                     iii

TARGET AUDIENCE - Gynecologic Surgeons

PROGRAM GOAL
The goal of the annual scientific meeting is to provide member and non-
member attendees with a forum for the latest and most innovative
developments in gynecologic surgery. This will be accomplished through
lecture, slide, video and poster presentations. Oral presentations are
followed by a discussion and a question and answer session.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the meeting attendees should be able to:

1) Employ an evidence-based approach to understanding the
advantages and disadvantages of surgical and non-surgical
procedures used in the treatment of gynecologic and urogynecologic
   disorders.

2) Understand the etiology and pathophysiology of pelvic floor
dysfunction including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and
   pelvic organ prolapse.

3) Develop a comprehensive understanding of the risks and benefits of
   vaginal mesh kit procedures.

4) Describe methods of diagnosing and management of complications
   encountered in reconstructive pelvic surgery.

5) Develop a more detailed understanding of open, laparoscopic and
   robotic abdominal sacrocolpopexy.

6) Describe the cost / benefit ratio for the surgical management of
   advanced ovarian cancer.
