Preface

T     he need for a national level training institute was keenly felt in the early seventies
      to cater to the management training needs of the banking sector.
The birth of the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) was a sine qua non
for the development of human resources of the banking institutions at that time. In the
beginning, BIBM had to concentrate on training of the entry-level officers due to
absence of appropriate training infrastructure in the banking industry. However, with
the passage of time, it assumed the responsibility of imparting training to the mid and
senior level officials of the banking sector.
In the early nineties, the financial sector of Bangladesh underwent a number of reform
measures as part of structural adjustment in the economy. In line with these reforms, the
banking institutions have been adopting new strategies and methods for improving their
services. BIBM is also keeping pace by putting up its best efforts to respond to the need
for capacity-building of bank officials for implementation of the reform measures.
Meanwhile, the banking sector of Bangladesh demanded upgradation of capabilities of
managerial-level officials as the banks expanded their horizon of operations. In line
with that scenario, BIBM regularly updates its training areas, contents and methods.

In 1997, BIBM entered into education program offering a post-graduate program in
bank management - Masters in Bank Management (MBM). Initially, the program was
conducted during day time. Later on, responding to the demand from in-service
professionals, an evening MBM program was launched. Beside training and
education, BIBM's current activities include undertaking research, organizing
seminars and publishing reports on the issues relevant to the banking and financial
sector. BIBM publishes a journal and a bulletin on a regular basis. The institute also
provides support in recruiting bank officials. Since inception till December, 2010
BIBM trained a total of 62,387 officers of banks and financial institutions. Further, 523
MBM graduates passed out from BIBM during the period 1996- 2010 and almost all of
them have joined the banking profession. Besides, 55 Evening MBM graduates passed
out from BIBM since inception in 2006.

In the process of preparing the academic calendar, training courses, training
workshops, research workshops, and research projects, etc. of the coming year are
identified by an Academic Calendar Committee with the support of BIBM faculties.
Then a draft is finalized in a Review Meeting with the participation of
representatives from all member banks of BIBM. After finalizing the draft of the
Academic Calendar, it is placed before the BIBM Executive Committee.
Accommodating the recommendations of the BIBM Executive Committee, the
proposed academic activities are placed before the Governing Board for approval.
Following the same process, the Academic Calendar of BIBM for the year 2011 was
approved by the Governing Board for implementation over the year. Despite
consultation with the stakeholders, some of the training needs might remain
unaddressed. BIBM welcomes suggestions from all concerned for inclusion of
unaddressed issues and further improvement of its activities.

General Information
STATUS AND OBJECTIVES
Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) was established by Bangladesh Bank, the nationalized
commercial banks and other financial institutions as a national institute for training, education, research and
consultancy in the banking sector and was registered on 31st December 1974, under the Societies Act. XXI of
1860. The major objectives of the Institute are:
        a)      To impart training and education in banking operations and management;
        b)      To conduct research on issues relating to banking operations and management; and
        c)      To provide consultancy services relating to banking and allied fields.

MASTERS IN BANK MANAGEMENT (MBM) PROGRAM


Introduced in 1997, the Masters in Bank Management (affiliated with National University) is a two year
full time day program consisting of 6 (six) terms. Each term has duration of 4 (four) months.

The objective of the MBM program is to equip the students to develop the skills and analytical abilities
needed for the efficient handling of affairs of banks and financial institutions. Instilling a purpose of
innovation, judgment, creativity among the students is also a motto of the program.

A graduate in any field of study with minimum one first division or class and no third division or class in
any certificate /degree examination is eligible to apply. Officers from member banks and financial
institutions duly nominated by the authorities may also apply. A total of 60 students are selected on merit
basis through an admission test.

The MBM program constitutes course work of 72 credit hours, that is, a student shall have to complete
twenty-four courses (3 credit hours for each course). In addition, every student must write a project

paper (in the 2 year) weighing 6 credit hours and appear for four viva-voce examinations (at the end of
I, II, IV and V terms) weighing in total 3 credit hours.

The MBM program has earned a very good reputation in Bangladesh and abroad. Almost all the
graduates of MBM program have been absorbed in different banks and financial institutions.

EVENING MASTERS IN BANK MANAGEMENT (EMBM) PROGRAM


BIBM has also introduced one Evening Masters in Bank Management (EMBM) program, mainly for the
professional bankers from July 2006. The EMBM degree is a two year and eight months program
consisting of eight terms.

A graduate in any field of study with no third division or class in any certificate /degree examination is
eligible to apply for admission to the EMBM program. A total of 50 students are selected on merit basis
through an admission test.

The EMBM program constitutes course work of 72 credit hours, that is, a student shall have to complete
24 courses (3 credit hours for each course). In each term, a student is required to take three courses as
prescribed by the authority. In addition, every student must write a project paper (in the last term)
weighing 3 credit hours and appear for four viva voce examinations (at the end of II, IV, VI and VII
terms) weighing in total 3 credit hours.

Online Nomination Process
Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) started online nomination system since March 2011. As per
the system, BIBM asks for online nominations through its website (http://www.bibm.org.bd) from the member
banks for its Training Courses, Training Workshops and Research Workshops. Member banks are required to
nominate their participants by filling up a form through the BIBM web. List of participants of each program is
finalized and disseminated by BIBM through the same website. The system is expected to ensure efficient,
smooth and transparent management of nomination process.
Following steps are to be followed for online nomination:
Log on to http://www.bibm.org.bd
1. BIBM web home page will appear like figure 1.0. Click Nomination at the bottom of home page.

2. Click Bank Login for nomination. (Figure 1.1).

3. Write User Name and Password provided by BIBM. Click Login Now from figure 1.2.

4. Your own Bank window for nomination will appear (Figure 1.3). Click View Course for Nomination from
left pannel.

5. Courses open for nomination will be viewed in the window (Figure 1.4). From this window select the
course you wnat to nominate by clicking Click Add Participant from Figure 1.4.

6. Course name and other information requried sheet will come. The window will appear like Figure 1.5 and
fill up the form and click submit. After completing all submission click Home.

7.After filling-up the above form you may view the participant list by clicking view participant list from left
panel like Figure 1.6.

8. Finally you have to Click the participant name from the above Figure 1.6 and the window will appear like
Figure 1.7. If you want to edit you have to click Edit (any information can be deleted or changed before final
submission). For final submission, click Final Submission. Now final submission is done and no change or
deletion is possible.

9. To view final list of Participants selected by BIBM click Final Selected List from left panel (Not before
one week of the commencement of the course)
