Welcome to our first ever OBrochure Cruise Experience Guide.
No longer synonymous with Captain Stubing and his crew’s Love
Boat shenanigans, cruising has become a commonly chosen and
more affordable mode of travel for a broader demographic.
With a vast array of youth oriented activities on offer, along with
entertainment to rival some of the glitziest casinos in Las Vegas,
travellers are now enticed by the concept of unpacking once
and having all they desire literally at their doorstep. How else can
you travel the world and bring the comforts of home along for
the ride?
This guide is based on an independent survey regarding cruising
habits of both the travel trade and consumers. The results were
quite surprising at times!
According to the survey, smaller intimate ships were just as popular as the jaw dropping mega-liners and some
brands that one might think would attract a younger demographic are just as popular with the baby boomers of
the world.
Fares and ports of call tied as the most considered factors when choosing a cruise. While, the decision of which
line to sail with seems often based on the benefits on offer and brand-loyalty. In fact, many cruisers choose only
to sail with one line!
Whilst it may be brief, we hope that the OBrochure Cruise Experience Guide whets your appetite enough to book,
or at least plan, your next cruise.
Yours in cruising,
Natalie

Meet fellow passengers online
Nervous about meeting people on your cruise? Why
not register on a ‘roll call’ prior to embarkation?
Reminiscent of your days in school but all conducted
online, this is a great way to meet your fellow
passengers, organise dinner together or even
arrange a car pool to the port.
Especially helpful for solo cruisers, websites like
www.meetoncruise.com bring cruisers together so
that embarkation day is a little less daunting.
What to pack
Formal nights, theme parties or lounging by the poolside...such a relaxing holiday can suddenly turn into a
nightmare when staring at an empty suitcase. However, packing for a cruise need not be a stressful task.
The travel documents you receive from your travel agent will generally provide you with information about which
theme parties to expect and how many formal nights you’ll likely face. If in doubt, a quick phone call to the
cruise line will answer any questions you may have.
As a guide, a week-long cruise will usually offer two formal nights where women can don gowns and men a suit
or even a tux. If you prefer not to embrace formal nights, passengers are always welcome in smart-casual attire
in the buffet restaurant onboard.
A smart casual wardrobe is recommended during the day but be warned, while swimsuits and sarongs are fine
around the pool they are not allowed in dining areas.
Check voltage onboard
There is nothing worse than boarding a cruise and finding that your camera charger is not compatible with the
voltage onboard. Check with your travel agent or cruise line directly prior to departure and invest in an adaptor
to save the stress.

                         The river cruising difference
An ever-emerging segment of the cruise industry, river cruising is the perfect answer for those wanting to
experience unique itineraries or who consider themselves more a fan of the ports visited than of the onboard
    activities offered.
Onboard a river cruise, passengers can look forward to personalised service and an often all-inclusive offering
that also takes into consideration shore based tours.
The experiences are endless and, with the rapid expansion of the segment, the only foreseeable issue will be if
there is the capacity for the increasing number of vessels wanting to sail their passengers down the beautiful rivers
    of the world!

                                 Rivers of the world
From sailing the historic Nile to the romantic Danube, the vineyard-lined Douro to the longest river in Europe, the
Volga, there is an option for everyone when it comes to river cruising.
We take a look at some of the most popular and up-and-coming rivers of the world here.

VOLGA RIVER - Russian river cruising is becoming increasingly popular with companies including Scenic Tours and
Uniworld offering historic voyages down Europe’s largest and longest waterway, the Volga River. Cherished by
Russians, Peter the Great sailed the river some 300 years ago on his quest to bring the country out of the Dark
Ages.

DOURO RIVER - Sail down the 897 kilometre river that is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leading
from Spain and Portugal to Porto, the Douro River is lined with terraced vineyards and qintas (farms). The oldest
isolated wine region in the world is most famous for its sweet fortified port wine and is included in Uniworld’s
11-day Lisbon to Porto itinerary.

NILE RIVER - The longest river in the world is steeped in history and runs for 6,550 kilometres through the countries of
Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, the Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Egypt.
Perhaps the most popular route to cruise is Luxor to Aswan in Egypt. On this voyage, passengers are able to
experience such memorable sights as the Temple of Philae, Valley of the Kings and the Aswan High Dam.
Passengers are also often offered the option of a daily trip to the remarkable Abu Simbel. Watching the sun set
over fields of papyrus is breathtaking and many cruise companies including Avalon Waterways sail to the region.

DANUBE RIVER - A river synonymous with romance, the Danube runs for 2,888 kilometers connecting more
countries from its source in Donaueschingen to its mouth in the Black Sea than any other river. Historically both the
Germans and the Romans worshipped the Danube as a god and now, companies including Avalon Waterways
and TAUCK offer a variety of voyages.

Clichéd as it may seem, Avalon’s Suite Ships really do offer the best of both worlds. Naturally they’re luxurious as you
would expect from Europe’s youngest river cruise fleet, but slide back the wall-to-wall panoramic windows and you’ll
find your suite transformed into an exceptionally spacious open-air balcony. You see, Europe has never seen anything
like Avalon’s new fleet of Suite Ships. Just as you’ve never seen Europe like this before.

                                              A boutique offering
Whilst onboard experiences are extensive, and the number of shore tours on offer seems to increase with each
cruise, lines are also recognising the popularity of more boutique, specialised excursions.
As any regular cruiser will attest, it can be quite tiring to see the same ports time and again, no matter how
beautiful they may be. The solution? A boutique excursion.
Imagine shopping with an executive chef before a lesson on how to
whip up a fabulous meal in Canada, becoming a dolphin trainer for
a day, or swimming with sea lions in Mexico. These experiences and
many others are offered by cruise lines including Disney, Crystal and
       Holland America.
Regular cruisers are given the option to experience landmarks they
may have visited many times over in a different light, perhaps with
an after-hours tour or exclusive access to an area regularly off-limits.
Going one step further, Holland America Line offers the Cruise With
Purpose Collection as part of The Collections of Holland America
Line. With such options as releasing baby turtles into the wild in
Acapulco, or producing silk thread in Konavle near Dubrovnik,
passengers are offered the opportunity to give back to the
communities they visit whilst also taking part in a ‘once in a lifetime’
Dubbed ‘voluntourism’ this extension of the shore tour offering has also been embraced by cruise lines including
       Crystal, Carnival, Silversea and Norwegian.
Passengers may also be able to claim a portion back as a tax deduction if travelling on a dedicated charity
cruise, participating in a fundraising activity onboard, or as part of a shore excursion.

Or perhaps you’re a die-hard Elvis fan who desires nothing more than

                          Rewarding your loyalty
In this era of extensive choice in cruising, our survey ascertained that sometimes it is the additional benefits that
make all the difference when selecting which ship to sail on. With almost every line rewarding regular cruisers’
loyalty, we’ve detailed the top three most popular programs below.

                         #1 - Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Crown & Anchor - Multi-tiered
Cruise points are accrued based on the number of nights sailed and the level of
stateroom reserved. One point is received per cruise night or double points can be
obtained when a suite is booked.
Benefits Include (dependent on level achieved):
Invitation to captain’s cocktail party, fare discounts, access to exclusive members only
section of the website, priority check-in for Platinum Members up, priority upgrade option
dependent on cabin availability, access to a concierge lounge complete with happy

dining room, onboard events, quarterly magazine.

 # 2 - Princess Cruises Captains’ Circle - Multi-tiered
                                       Circle,
Convenience is key with the Captain’s Circle, as passengers are automatically granted
membership upon completion of their first cruise with the line. Points are accrued
dependent on the number of cruises sailed in addition to the number of days spent at
 sea.
Captain’s Circle members will also accrue points when travelling onboard Princess
Cruises’ sister line, P&O Australia ships.
Benefits Include (dependent on level achieved):
Internet credits, invitation to captain’s cocktail party, complimentary mini-bar and
laundry service, priority check-in and disembarkation, preferential pricing offers.

                         # 3 - Cunard Line World Club - Four-tiered
World Club membership is available in four-tiers; Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond,
with passengers registered automatically after their first sailing with Cunard. Points are
accrued either by the amount of voyages sailed or the number of nights spent onboard,
                         whichever option is greater.
Benefits Include (dependent on level achieved):

fo edam era smaerd spihs ehT

We may be minnows in a pod of whales, but Australia has been hit by the wave of popularity in cruising that has
been evident in other countries for decades. The International Cruise Council of Australia reported that a record
466,692 Australians cruised in 2010. This 27 per cent increase compared to 2009 has been recognised by the
cruise lines with many committing to home-port ships ‘down under’ in the coming years.
Below we detail several ships who will ‘call Australia home’.
