relinquished her dower's rights to this property. However, Priscilla _____ was mentioned as his wife in Richard

stated "to my daughter Lucy John all my real and personal estate, namely all my lands and movables....I will that

Dene) was born 1751 in Maryland, and died 22 May 1826 in Dean Station, South Carolina (Now Starr),
Anderson District. He married Gwendolyn James Abt. 1773, daughter of Griffith James and Mary Gyger. She
was born 1754 in Washington County, Maryland, and died Aug 1835 in Starr, SC.

Notes for Samuel Dean:
Samuel and Harmon Cummin, his brother-in-law, built two houses near Mountain Creek Baptist Church,
Anderson County, then drew straws to see which one got which house.
From "A GENERAL HISTORY OF ANDERSON, SC" we have the following account credited to Gwendolyn
James Dean.

Among the pioneer settlers in this section of upper South Carolina were two brother-in-laws, Samuel Dean and
Harmon Cummin. They had married sisters, Misses James, and the two families came to Anderson, SC from
Maryland some years after the war. Harmon Cummin had served as a revolutionary soldier but Samuel Dean had
been rejected upon the grounds that he was needed to keep the Indians in subjection. His home at that time was on
the borders of civilization and it was subject to terrible Indian ravages. These Indian ravages were so dreadful that
the horror of them reconciled Mrs. Dean to leave her mother (so far away) and remove to the new section of
South Carolina.

Samuel Dean and Gwendolyn James and others are buried in unmarked graves on what was then their property
near Fairview School on Highway 116 between Belton, SC and Williamston, SC.

Starr, SC was first called Dean, SC for Samuel Dean who was the first settler at Starr, SC.

                Excerpt from "Country Cousins"

There is some confusion as to Samuel Dean's service in the military. In the History of Anderson County, it
states that he was needed at home to defend it from the Indians. This was in Maryland and the danger from the
Indians made it easier for his wife to leave her family for SC. The roll of the Continental Line of the first
Pennsylvania Regiment for the company of Captain Craig in 1776 gives the name of Samuel Dean, private
soldier. A return of a class roll of the 5th company of the 5th battalion of Cumberland County Militia, Company
of Captain John Buchanan shows first class, Samuel Dean for July 31, 1780 and also 1782. There is no record of
assumed that this PA Samuel Dean was the Samuel Dean who moved to S.C. and have joined the DAR based on
the PA Samuel Dean's military record. There was a Samuel Dean living in Cumberland County, PA, during the
Revolutionary War. Many have joined the DAR based on him. He married Martha Camp and lived in
Cumberland County. He was living in Cumberland County, PA 1790-1810, long after our Samuel Dean moved to
S.C. But his military record is not the same as the S.C. Samuel Dean. According to his DAR application he was
born in 1760. His first military service started in 1779. The index of Revolutionary soldiers in the Federal
Records Center shows that only one Samuel Dean served in the Revolutionary War from PA.

   Samuel Dean's will is a floating will, see box 15, # 173, dated September 25, 1826, Anderson S. C. He willed
his wife, Gwenny Dean one third part of his real and personal estate during her lifetime. To sons, Aaron Dean and
Moses Dean all of his tract of land containing 130 acres, whereon Moses Dean now lives. "The rest of my estate
to be divided between my heirs as follows: Thomas Dean, Miriam McGregor, Joseph Dean, Samuel Dean, Mary
Hillhouse, and the heirs of my son John Dean dec'd as follows Obediah Dean, Elizabeth, Matason, Samuel, Rhoda
and Joseph, these six chn. to receive their father's legacy, and my sons Richard, Griffith and Moses whereas I sold
property to Joseph Dean and now hold note of $600 payable to the heirs of my son John. I will that said note
stand." Thomas and Griffith Dean were executors. Witness: W. McGregor, Aaron Dean, Elizabeth T. Dean.

Sept 25, 1826 Samuel Dean, son, protested the will because the witnesses were legatees and interested. The
will was disallowed. Consequently the estate took a long time to be settled. Thomas Dean and Aaron Dean were
Administrators of the final settlement. Settlement date was 3-27-1843 by William Magee, Ordinary, Anderson,
SC. The will mentions slaves by name.

The history of Anderson County, SC has an account given by Mrs. Samuel Dean of their move from Maryland to
Anderson District, SC. This leads me to believe they married in Maryland. This is further supported by the fact
that their first 5 children were born in Washington County, Maryland.

In her old age, Gwendolyn James Dean used to tell her grandchildren about that long and trying trip. The
family came to South Carolina in a cart whose wheels were made from sections of a big tree. The wheels were
thicker in the center than on the edge and a hole was bored through the center for the axle. After many days and
nights of slow moving through pathless forests with the bitter consciousness of having left loved ones forever [
not even letters passed in those days between South Carolina and Maryland ] the family was disappointed when
they first reached Pendleton District, SC. However, they settled on what is known as the DEAN PLACE
somewhere near Mountain Creek at Starr, SC and, being free from Indian raids, reconciled themselves to their
new home. At the Dean Place, they raised eight CHILDREN: six boys and two girls. Most of the family in later
years went west but one son, Moses Dean, remained and became one of the best known and respected of
Anderson's early citizens. Aaron Augustus DEAN, a confederate veteran of the county, was a son of Moses Dean.
There is in Anderson County, SC a large Dean connection and they have all been useful and respected citizens.

Hi, I descend from Richard, Samuel, Joseph, Hardy, Elizabeth. My gt. grandmother was an early settler in
Cumberland Co. Tn. coming from DeSoto Co. Ms. I have not worked on this line lately. Richard came from
England???? I will be happy to share what I have.

Hi, Yes the Deans were in Lincoln Co. and the courthouse burned so I have been unable to get a marriage bond
for Hardy Dean and Cynthia Pitts. The Deans came from England to Md. to S.C. to Tn. to Ms. (Marshall Co. and
my Hardys plantation was in DeSoto Co.) My Elizabeth Jane Dean md. Thomas Lingo, Cumberland Co. Tn. in
1856. Why they were in this wilderness is unclear. Thomas was probably related to a family named Basket who
had come to the area from Ky. They operated a mill on Piney Creek. I have been in contact with a Dean who now
owns the farm in Marshall Co. In the 1870 Marshall Co. Census, Joseph Dean lives surrounded by his Dean
servants.

Major Robert Aaron Dean, farmer and public official was born near Chulahoma, Marshall county, Mississippi,
Dec. 29, 1836. He was a son of Russell and Louisa Ann (Alsup) Dean. His paternal ancestors were English and
his maternal were Irish and Welch. Elizabeth (Edmonson) Dean, was the first white child ever born in Huntsville,
Alabama.

Major Dean was educated in the public schools of his native county and engaged in farming during his long
public life. He enlisted as Sargeant, in 1861, with the Marshall county riflemen at Chulahoma, Misissippi, and
was soon assigned to the 19th Mississippi Regiment of Infantry, in the army of North Virginia. Here he was soon
promoted to 3d Lieutenant and 1862, 2nd and then 3d Lieutenant. In 1863 he was made captain of his company
and before the close of the war he became Major of the 19th Mississippi Regiment.

After the war he settled in the north western section of LaFayette county near the home of his childhood. Here he
retired to a quiet successful farm life where he became a valuable leader and a deacon in the Primitive Baptist
church at Glenville in Panola county. In 1878 he became a member of the state legislature and served one term.

He became a member of the Senate in 1886 where he remained until 1896. He served as a member of the
Constitutional Convention of 1890 and was the chairman of the committee of the penitentiary which
recommended the abolition of the convict leasing system and authorized the legislature to purchase farms, which
soon lead to our present penal farm system. Major Dean also served on the Franchise, Apportionment, and
Election Committees. He had not asked for re-election to the Senate but expressed a desore to retire from public
life but as a result of his proven ability and his reputation for honesty, he was unexpectedly called, by Governor
A. H. Longino, to serve as a member of the committee which supervised the creation of the new State Capitol
from 1900 - 1903. His last public service was in the state Senate 1908 to 1912. He was a loyal Democrat, a
Mason, and a deacon of his church. He was married Feb. 2, 1864 (Roland-must be an error) to Lucy Ann
Langston a daughter of John McClure Langston and Anner (Hudspeth) Langston of Panola county. There were

Account from Lemuel Miller:
Elaine and I visited Aunt Mary Lou on her pecan farm - I guess she was at least 75 years old then.

She gave us a tour of the pecan farm north of Abilene.

The barn was in need of repair! Corner posts were in bad shape!

Mary Lou remarked that, "The posts need to be replaced, but I cannot set posts as I used to!"

A bit later she died on the farm!

Notes for Lott Lewis Shell, Jr.:
The oldest son of 6 children.

He was called "Brother", Uncle Brother, Uncle Lott.

He had very good common sense and was an intelligent man. He loved to be with people and was a very upright
person. He smiled and laughed a lot and really enjoyed teasing Uncle Joe Simpson. I remember once, he had
bought one of the drinking glasses that had slits at the top so when you drank out of it, your drink would dribble
down your chin. He gave Uncle Joe that glass one time when they were over. Uncle Joe had a very good sense of
humor and so did not seem to be offended at being made to look clumsy.
Daddy was good with tools, woodworking, mechanics, farming, hunting and fishing.

A photo of him and his dad, Grandaddy Shell, having shot a deer. It is included in the scrapbook.
He played football in high school.
He went to Sul Ross and had to quit when he got appendicitis.

He met momma, Ruby Lurene Dean, through Aunt Maureen Simpson (nee Shell), daddy's sister. (Aunt Maureen
was the oldest child in the family.) Aunt Maureen and momma were school teachers in Hamlin, Texas, and
momma went home with Aunt Maureen one time. That is where she met daddy.

She and daddy were married in San Angelo, Texas, in 1938. Daddy moved to Hamlin where momma lived. They
lived in a house in the south part, just west of the main north-south highway. I don't know just exactly where it is.
Daddy worked with Uncle Joe at "Simpson's Fine Foods", prior to, and after, the WWII. Momma tells a story
about right after they were married, that daddy liked to wrestle with her. She did not in the least enjoy it and said
she nearly left him. Evidently he quit and in my eyesight, loved my mother very much.

When the war broke out, daddy tried to join the Army, but his health prohibited him. He was accepted into the
Navy, in 1943, I think. He made Chief Petty Officer and was a cook and a gunner. A man sitting next to him
when they were firing the cannons, was hit and exploded. Daddy received shrapnel that was in him when he died.
The war did a real number on him (mentally), that was permanent. Mom said he was so patient before he went to
war and just a bundle of nerves when he returned.

We, momma, Aunt Maureen, Priscilla and I, went to San Francisco, when he returned from the war, to meet him.
He told me later that when the men got to the U.S., they bought and drank milk until they were sick. The men
also were throwing their Navy jackets away when they got back. Daddy collected some of the coats they threw
away. I think this was in 1944 or 45.

When we were all back home, Daddy worked for Uncle Joe again at the grocery store. He eventually went to
work for Cudahy Meat Packing Company as a travelling salesman. I remember Daddy would bring display
posters of pigs home and set them up. Priscilla and I were thrilled and always would ask him if he had any when
he came home.

He left Cudahy and went to Swift and Company as a travelling salesman. The office was in Abilene on the street
east of Pine- is it Walnut? I remember his bosses name was Mr. Pensinger. We moved to Abilene, Texas, in
1948 when daddy started at Swift and Co. We bought the house on 1642 Clinton in Abilene.

Daddy and Mr. Pensinger had a falling out and daddy left Swift and Co. He had been talking to Uncle Travis
(Dean- momma's brother), in Ft Worth, Tx about the oil business. Uncle Travis was an oil operator and daddy
began doing that, too, only daddy did it independantly. I think this was about 1950 or 51. I remember we bought
a 1951 Chevrolet from Uncle Travis and I think he was in the oil business then.

Daddy was an independent oil operator for a number of years. He worked so many hours !! Uncle Travis (Dean)
helped him get started. His responsibilities included researching where to drill, talking to the land owners about
leasing their land, finding someone to do the drilling and its various related functions. He drilled in Callahan
county, seems like mostly, although he was in Palo Pinto, Shackleford and other counties. Some of the towns
were Baird, Luling, Putnam,.......

He eventually got into the Insurance selling business and had his own agency. His partner stole money from the
agency and I know Daddy and he split, but I don't know what happened to his partner.

He sold the house on Clinton street and bought one at 2110 Grape in Abilene. This was about 1957 or 1958. I
think it cost about $11,000. ( I know when he died, it had been paid off, so momma did not have to worry about
it. I don't think daddy ever retired, but he did slow down as he entered his sixties. )

He bought a farm just south of Merkel, about 84 acres. It had an old farm house, 2 water wells with windmills, a
couple of sheds, a pen, and a shed that had been used as a blacksmith shop. The shop had a handcrank bellows
and other old tools. We planted oats and wheat. He bought an old Farmall tractor (F-12), that we had to crank to
start. He had to replace the engine in it once a couple of years after he bought it. He bought a one-way with 4
disks and a planter. He and mom planned to fix the old house up to stay at on weekends and summer, but, for
some reason, we never got it finished.
nice farm, I don't remember how big, but I think larger than the first farm. It had a nice house, barn, tank (pond)
on it and was located just south of Eula on the paved highway. He planted wheat there and stored it in the large
barn. They had cows and horses. They sold it, must have been in the mid-1960s and moved back to the house at
2110 Grape, which they had not sold. They did rent it out to Joe Allen Dean and his family for a while, while Joe
Allen (Momma's nephew) went to college- Hardin Simmons, I think. He lived there with momma and Kathy,
until she married, until he passed away.
When they had moved back to Abilene, he and another man he called Popcorn- who was a barber- either bought
or leased a small piece of land on the east side of Abilene, where they raised pigs. I was only out there 2 or 3
times. I think they had them slaughtered for food, but I don't remember much about that. This took place in the
late 1960s or early 1970s.

Automobiles: The first one I remember is a 194? Buick when we moved to Abilene. The next was a 1951
Chevrolet that we bought from Uncle Travis Dean. Then a brand new 1954 Chevrolet. We bought that one in
Baird or Ranger, or somewhere near - maybe Eastland or Weatherford, I don't remember because the 1951 Chevy
broke down on the highway. After those, a 1953 Cadillac, a 1954 Oldsmobile 88, a 195? Chrysler Imperial, a
1964? Chevrolet, a Ford station wagon- a fishing vehicle. After that I don't remember any more.
