D – Situation and general description of the University of A Coruña (UDC)
A Coruña is located in the North West corner of Spain, on the Atlantic coast. It is a modern and
very cosmopolitan city of over 250.000 inhabitants. Founded over a thousand years ago, the
city of A Coruña has a rich and ancient seafaring tradition and its people are friendly and
gregarious. The symbol of the city is the well know lighthouse called “Torre de Hércules”, which
is the only roman lighthouse still functioning nowadays. This emblematic monument was the
inspiration for the design of the University of A Coruña’s logo “Hac Luce” (which means “with
this light”).

Map of the city of A Coruña

The University of A Coruña was founded in 1990. It is a public institution. Its statutes were first
published in September 1992 and were revised in May 2004. Our university is divided into two
main campuses, the Campus of A Coruña (including the campuses of La Zapateira, Elviña, Oza
and Riazor) and the Campus of Ferrol (including Campus of Esteiro and Campus of Serantes)
The University of A Coruña at present, offers 57 different degrees (50 undergraduate degrees, 7
Diplomas, and 41 Doctoral Degrees) taught at 25 different centers (22 Centers of its own and 3
ascribed Centers). There are 44 departments, 6 University Institutes (U.I. of Health Science, U.
I. of Environmental Science, U. I. “Isidro Parga Pondal” of Geology, U.I. of Maritime Studies, U.I.
“Salvador de Madariaga” of European Studies, and U.I. of Irish Studies “Amergin”). It also has
two Jean Monnet Chairs (one in Communitarian Law and one in Industrial European
Economics) awarded by the European Union.
The increase in the number of students and teaching staff gives us a clear idea of the
development of the University of A Coruña. The numbers increased from 12.000 students in
1990 to 26.000 students last year, from 500 teachers to more than 1.000, from 193 personnel
staff to more than 600.
The official languages of the University are Spanish and the Galician language (gallego) as
stated in the Statutes of the Institution, although “gallego” is the language usually used within
the University. The lectures can be given in either language.

E - Registration procedures
The International Relations office is in charge of the administration of the Socrates programme.
We recommend all of the ECTS or departmental coordinators in each foreign institution we have
a bilateral agreement signed with, to send us the ECTS application documents before June
30th for all exchanges starting in October (1st semester or whole academic year), and before
December 30th for all exchanges starting in February (2nd semester).

All foreign Socrates students should, at their arrival at A Coruña, first come to our office
to fill out the administrative papers for their enrolment. They all should bring along the
following documents from their country of origin:

Medical insurance coverage valid in Spain (European Health Card – old E-128) or private
    Copy of ID or passport.

students who need to improve their linguistic knowledge, to register at the EOI at their arrival at
A Coruña. At the end of the course, they will receive an official certification according to their
level of Spanish language. The annual inscription fee is around 75€ for the course, 5 class

C – Cost of living
A Coruña
The University has several cafeterias in the different faculties, aside from the Club Universitario
(located in “dique de abrigo” en La Coruña), and the Central Cafeteria (located in “el Pabellón
de Estudiantes”, Campus de Elviña). In all of those cafeterias the students can eat a menu,
called <<Menú del Día>> for around 4,60 € to 5,00 €. Some cafeterias have special prices for
students showing their university card.
In Ferrol at the Esteiro Campus, the students have a university cafeteria and a dining room, and
at the Serantes Campus they have a cafeteria where meals are served. In both places they
have the <<Menú del dia>> for around 4,60 € to 5,00 €. Some cafeterias have special prices for
students showing their university card.
There are several bus lines and trains that cover the center of the city as well as the
surroundings. The prize for the bus is 0,87 €. Students can buy a “Bonobus” which is a bus
card, coming out each ticket at 0,58 €, and only applicable at weekdays.
     Personal expenses
We have to take into account the expenses for didactic material (books, papers etc...) that are
incurred at the beginning of the Academic Year. Aside from all these basic expenses we have to
count on the trip back to their country of origin. Expenses are an estimate that change
depending on the necessities of each person and other unexpected expenses incurred.

D – Accommodation
The University of A Coruña does not organize directly foreign students’ accommodation in A
Coruña nor in Ferrol. It facilitates information to the students in order for them to reserve their
accommodation on their own. We recommend the option of renting shared apartments in the
city. The students should reserve a hotel or hostel for the first days in the city, so that they can
visit “in situ” apartments for rent, before signing any documents.
All foreign students can find up-to-date lists of shared apartments for rent in A Coruña, on the
web site of the SAPE (Servicio de Apoyo y Promoción del Estudiante – Campus de Elviña – A
Coruña) at clicking under “Taboleiro de
Anuncios sobre vivenda”.
For additional information on accommodation, they can also check the following web pages: and

For accommodation in Ferrol, the students can request information at: the SAPE (Servicio de
Apoyo y Promoción del Estudinate – Edificio SAPE-LERD, 2º piso – Campus de Esteiro –
Ferrol), and in the web:

E – Health insurance
All foreign students should come with an insurance coverage valid for Spain, and should apply for
the Health Insurance Card in the Social Security Centers of their country of origin. This card will
allow them to use all of the Social Security services in Spain, when needed, free of charge. They
can also bring private insurance coverage. Any other insurance, such as coverage again theft or
luggage lost, can be helpful.

F– Other practical information
A Coruña has a very benign climate. The winters are mild and the summers are warm. The

It is convenient to open a bank account in a bank that has offices in Spain as well as in the country
of origin, in order to facilitate the payment of scholarships or grants, and the availability of the
money. The University of A Coruña has signed a bilateral agreement with the Bank of Santander in
order to activate the electronic Student Cards. So these Student Cards can also be used as credit
cards if the students open a bank account in that bank.
