Program Overview

The Online Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction with Bilingual Education Specialization is
a program that is offered totally online, thus giving students and working professionals a flexible schedule
they can control. This online program uses state-of-the-art technology, making instruction engaging and
interactive. The courses are designed in a sequential format with the focus on students being able to
access the content rather than having to grapple with technology. The master's program focuses
primarily on Spanish/English bilingual instruction.

**Participants may also acquire an endorsement in English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) by simply
taking 12 semester credit hours of the specialization courses in English language skills (see program
structure below).

Upon completion of the eMCI/BE program, graduate will:

Demonstrate communicative competence and academic language proficiency in the first and the second

Demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of bilingual education and the concepts of bilingualism and

Demonstrate knowledge of the process of first and second language acquisition and development.

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the development and assessment of literacy in the primary
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the development and assessment of biliteracy.

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of content-area instruction in the first and second language.

Teaching Methods
The program is delivered totally online. The program is administered through the Blackboard Academic
Suites and Course Compass e-learning software. These platforms include live chats, online lectures,
virtual classrooms, and virtual office hours.

Program Structure

The program consists of 36 credit hours. Twelve hours of core courses are required and eighteen hours
of specialty courses along with six hours of Research and Statistics.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

1. Apply to the Graduate School
2. Submit an official transcript of all undergraduate work.
3. Submit evidence of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
4. Take the Graduate Records Exam (GRE)
5. Be admitted to the Graduate School
6. File a Degree Plan in the Graduate School/online
7. Contact Advisor via email
8. Apply for Comprehensive Exam/online
9. Take the TExES Generalist EC-6 test if applicable


The College of Education is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
(SACS) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
Program Tuition

$20,000 for the complete program. Tuition includes all materials needed to complete this online

       How long will it take to complete the program?

       Approximately 2 years given that the student takes 18 hours per academic year.

       Three hours in the spring, 3 in the fall and 3 in the summer--thus, giving the student one
       summer session off

       How much does it cost?

       Total cost for the program will be $20,000. Tuition will include all materials needed to complete
       the program.

       Are all classes online?

       Yes, all the classes are online.

       What are the requirements to enroll in this program?

       You must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution

       How is the program delivered?

       The program is delivered through Blackboard Academic Suites.

       Do I need to be fluent in Spanish to enroll in this program?

       Yes, you must be fluent in both English and Spanish.

       What is the GPA requirement for this course?

       The required GPA is 2.5 overall and a 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work.

       Can I get certified in Bilingual Education if I don't have certification in that field?

       Yes, however, you must take the Texas exam (Texas Examination of Educator Standards--TExES)
       exam to get certified in this content area--EC-6 Bilingual Generalist).
