DRF set up a bridge school for the 90
odd children living in this home in
February 2010. Supported by Sarva
Siksha Abhiyaan, this is the first bridge
school in Andhra Pradesh that caters to
children lodged at a juvenile home. The
school now has four teachers, of which
two are appointed by DRF and two are
government teachers.
Before the bridge school was set up, the
children had little sense of discipline or
purpose. They were often found lounging
about aimlessly in groups around the
home, with nothing constructive to
do. They attended vocational courses
such as tailoring or beautician courses,
but this too was done in a haphazard
fashion. Today, things are different. All
the children attend classes religiously
from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm, just as they
would if they were enrolled at a regular
school.
The curriculum and activities of the
school include a three-month long
Foundation Course that focuses on basic
Math and Communicative English as
well as building language skills. After
completing this course, the students’
academic skills are assessed and they
are grouped according to their age for
further training in preparation for their
Class 7 and 10 examinations.
An important aspect of the bridge school
is to also encourage the creative abilities
and life skills of the students through
various recreational activities such as
