 Partnership between 2 Head Start Grantees:
  Community Action Program, Belknap-Merrimack
  Counties, Inc., and Southern New Hampshire
  Services, Inc.

 Model utilizing a Registered Dental Hygienist as the
  Oral Health Program Coordinator.

   Ongoing education of parents, children, and staff about oral
    health.
   Increase the percent of health professionals working with Head
    Start agencies.
   Promote awareness of oral health needs of Early Head
    Start/Head Start families.

Challenges
   On-going dental care for children ages 1 to 3.
   High turn-over of staff.
   Communication between families, staff, and providers.
   Sustainability of Oral Health Program within Head Start.


Accomplishments
   Recruitment: More dentists seeing children age 1-5; education of
    dental community about Early Head Start/Head Start.
   Staff Awareness: Better understanding of good oral health for children.
   Public Awareness: Early Head Start/Head Start and oral health issues
    through partnerships.
   Children: Preventive efforts appear to have resulted in overall decrease
    in the number of children needing follow-up care.

Key Efforts in Promoting
Oral Health Education

 Identifying rural poverty needs in the
  community.
 Supporting children & families through
  parent involvement.
 Providing transportation services to dental
  appointments.
 Identifying insurance challenges.

Successes

 The Dental Family Services Worker promotes
  oral health education through parent
  workshops, classroom experiences, and
  trainings.
 Strong support from the family workers,
  teachers, and support staff.
 Partnering with local community organizations.
 Parents and families also are assisted with
  dental needs.

Challenges

 Medicaid providers are limited.
 None of the local oral surgeons in the area
  accept Medicaid.
 There are only two Pediatric Dentists in the
  area that will accept Medicaid.
 The Medicaid certification process can take a
  long time to be approved.
 The child may be absent the day the mobile
  dental van arrives.
 A child’s referral for treatment may not receive
  follow up.
