Objectives:

1. To carry out a detailed feasibility study to identify the best options for refurbishment and renewal of a 100 year
old hydro power station.
2. To undertake the turnkey contract for the design, installation and commissioning of the new scheme.

Implementation Details:

The Pant yr Afon hydro scheme was originally commissioned in 1904 to provide power for the Llechwedd Slate
Quarry operations. Two Gilkes Pelton turbines were installed to drive open frame 500V d.c. generators. A detailed
feasibility study carried out by Dulas in 2003 concluded that much of the original system was not suitable for
refurbishment, and over the following years a detailed plan was developed to build a new grid connected scheme
at the site. In partnership with the quarry owners, this involved negotiating planning permission and new
abstraction licences, obtaining grant funding from the European Union via WEFO, and identifying the technical
scope of works required.

Site Specific Issues:

Very little of the original equipment was suitable for re-use after 100 years in service. The re-development of the
site included:

1) Removal of the existing 450mm steel pipeline and replacement with 1150m of new butt fusion welded
polyethylene pipeline.
2) Construction of a new intake on the existing header pond to improve operation and allow safe access for
maintenance.
3) Refurbishment of an existing leat system and construction of 4 new intake systems to divert a proportion of flow
from adjacent streams into the hydro system.
4) Installation of a new automated valve control system.

Dulas hydro department has many years experience in turnkey contruction, refurbishment and troubleshooting, site finding

Site Specific Issues Continued:

Refurbishment of the existing powerhouse to install a new reinforced concrete foundation and tailrace channel
alongside the existing machines. Installation of a new single jet Turgo machine directly driving a 1500 rpm 600V
a.c. generator, with plc control system and SCADA. Installation of 200m of power cable to a new HV substation
building located higher in the quarry to allow connection to the overhead 11 kV grid.

Equipment and Technical Specifications:

1) Overall design and project management by Dulas Ltd.
2) 425 kW Gilkes single jet Turgo turbine driving an Amco Marelli 600V 1500 rpm generator.
3) Pipeline replacement, intake and powerhouse civil works by Jim Dorricott Construction.
4) Leat works by EG Davies.
5) Control system and SCADA by Dulas Ltd.

Conclusions:

The scheme is expected to generate an average of 1700 MWh per year, sufficient for around 350 homes. The
income from electricity sales will provide a significant boost to the quarry operations, helping to secure local
employment for the future.
