SUMMARY
Controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, and maintains equipment as an employee of
the City of Charleston by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls.
Administers first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from
burning structures. Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance. Protects property from water
and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants. Communicates with
superior during fire by portable two-way radio. Cleans premises after fire has been extinguished.
Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. Maintains apparatus,
quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants. Participates in training drills, demonstrations, and
courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and firefighting techniques.

REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months’ related experience
and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. South Carolina Fire Academy
1152 course certification or equivalent City of Charleston Fire Department Certification. South Carolina
Fire Academy Hazard Material Operation Level certification. Valid Driver’s License preferred.

SUMMARY

holders of approvals and denials in a timely manner. Insures all reports are properly filed and that they

debris onto a truck. Excavates ditches and cave-in repair with shovels. Lays fill materials to repair
drainage ditches. Mixes cement and assist crew, as needed. Plants sod and grass seed on City rights-of-
way. May drive a pickup truck, delivering debris to disposal site. Assists in taking measurements of the
worksite and in deciding quantities and types of material and equipment needed.

REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years’ related experience and/or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Driver’s License within 30 days of
employment. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) - Class B preferred.

SUMMARY
Performs a variety of highly skilled duties to maintain and/or repair the property or equipment of the City
using a variety of machines, tools and equipment by performing the following duties. Include the following
and other duties may be assigned. Responsible for the maintenance and repair on all City Police
Department vehicles and diesel equipment including garbage trucks, sweepers, scows, dump trucks,
vans, pick-up trucks and various construction equipment. Responsible for diagnosis and repair of the
following vehicles components; air conditioning, engine performance air/hydraulic systems, driveline
systems, emission systems, etc. Performs minor fabrication and welding as necessary. Assists other
