National Penn Launches Competitive Edge™ Checking Account
Unique checking account is aimed at helping small businesses succeed

Boyertown, Pa. – August 10, 2010 – National Penn's newly launched Competitive Edge Checking
account is aimed at helping small businesses succeed and it couldn't come at a better time than right

As the economy struggles to recover, starting a small business has rescued many from financial ruin.
In fact, of job seekers who gained employment in the second quarter of 2009, nearly one in 10 did so by
launching their own business, according to Challenger Gray & Christmas's quarterly Job Market Index.

But to stay competitive and relevant, a major portion of these small businesses require financial services
such as no minimum balance checking, no fee overdraft protection and discounts on business checks and
accessories, among others.

National Penn's Competitive Edge Checking includes these standard banking services and vital
non-banking solutions as well including:

● office and break room supplies ● domain registration
● computer training ● mailing & telemarketing list
● Web site hosting ● general marketing
● computer repair ● car rental
"These are precisely the types of solutions the Competitive Edge Checking account offers," said Dave
Kennedy, group executive vice president and chief delivery officer of National Penn. "This new
business checking account will help small business owners reduce their operating costs, increase their
profits, and help them to build a better bottom line."

For the locally based National Penn, the new checking product is expected to help the multitude of small
businesses in its footprint.

For example, in the Philadelphia area alone, there are over 69,000 small businesses and it is estimated
that another 6,000 start every year, according to the Philadelphia Chapter of SCORE, a non-profit
organization that fosters entrepreneurship, especially among underrepresented populations, within the
city of Philadelphia.

"The current economic environment has changed things for small businesses," said Kennedy. "Banks
need to be cognizant of the various challenges they face. National Penn has made this a priority and
designed a product to match the requirements of small businesses."
