International Update
Michelle Chan (Auckland and NZ No.1 – College Rifles Club and former Epsom Girls student)
has just competed in the Danish Super Series where she had an awesome 3 setter losing to a
player ranked no.31 in the world, she then faced world no. 10 - Jie Yao - from the Netherlands
in the French Super Series where she lost 5-21, 17-21. Michelle is training hard and playing in the
tough Danish club league and international tournament circuit and is a player with an exceptionally
professional approach but who is also making some big sacrifices and spending a lot of time away
from home. Spare her and all our players some good wishes this Christmas.

Gearing up for next season
To Restring or not to Restring?
Rough rule of thumb used by some is to restring the same number of times a year as
number of games you play a week. So play 3 games a week then restring three times a year.
Badminton can be hard on strings so this is only a guide. When stringing be aware that high
tension doesn’t always mean high power as you need to be more accurate to get the value of
a high tension racket ask your pro shop person for advice.
Upgrading your racket – take advantage of the November specials
The Pro Shop has some brand new rackets you can try before you buy over summer without
obligation. Our staff will fill you in on what is best for you and help you get more out of your
game so you are ready for the new season.

How to get more speed on court – the easy way
There are things you can do to improve your speed on court - one way is to
do hours of long running, building up to shorter runs and sprint work over
several months. But if you don’t want to go to all that trouble here are some
quicker ways that may interest you.
• Keep the racket up – check out how often you drop your racket during a game – can gain
you at least a second
• Stay on your toes – stay on your toes rather than flat footed – gain another half second
• Stagger your stance – don’t have feet side by side have one foot slightly in front of the other
so you can spring off diagonally forward or back
• Move your base – if your opponent can’t clear deep but drops a lot then move forward a
bit on court – this puts pressure on them and gets you closer to the shuttle
auckland badminton
Court Comment - Don’t you reckon it’s time we give interclub comps a bit of a
shakedown? We are hoping to trial some new ideas for winter interclub during the 2nd part of
summer league starting next year and see what works. If you have any ideas flip them through to
us to jack@auckbad.co.nz
Strings and Things – A cool game from Mrs Cooper
If you have trouble learning the forehand serve or have a child who is just starting out, here’s
something which can really really help and it’s fun. Put a shuttle on an upturned cardboard box
feathers facing down. Put another piece of board or cardboard about 2 m (approx 6 feet), 4 m
(approx 12 feet) away. Cut some holes in the large board and put some numbers on it e.g. 5, 10, 2.
The aim is to hit the shuttle into the holes and you get points depending on what holes you hit into.
(You can make it so they get more points for the smaller holes etc).

Badminton Stories From Your Badminton Community – You or your club could feature in
this section of the newsletter if you have a story to tell email cliff@auckbad.co.nz
Howick Ladies Badminton Club 50 Year Anniversary
This year the Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary and the Committees and the volunteers at
the Club have been doing some great work there over a number of years. At the celebrations
the Club organised a book so that people could write in their names but also comments so that
others could look back in the next 50 years and share the atmosphere. It is a great Club that
encompasses a wide range of cultures, Kiwis, English, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Scottish, Taiwanese,
Korean, Malaysian and more… It is a great success story and has a very strong history.
Mrs Mary McCarthy was the first President of the Club and with her original fellow members,
was crucial to ensuring the club starting in 1960. The first AGM of the Club was on the 26th
April 1961 the sub was just 10/- and a shuttle fee of 2/-. The club started on one court in Howick
Village with tournaments held at Gillies Ave which had also just been built.
In the first few years after the Club was formed Alice Butterworth and Heather Robson were
appointed coaches and initiated interclub at Gillies Ave. In 1970 crèche facilities were adopted
at 15cents per child. In 1976 the Club moved to the Howick Community Centre and was
incorporated. In 1979 Val Dorling started coaching. Subs were just $76 in the 1980’s and today
are $150 for two morning’s play each week. In 1989 men were able to join the midweek club for
the first time.
Congratulations to the Club and to all its past and current members and volunteers for making and
creating a unique part of our badminton history and culture past and present.
Learning From Our History Is The Key to Our Future in 2010
(50th Anniversary of Gillies Ave / 80th Anniversary of Auckland Badminton)
This is a good time to stop and remember both our history and our future. And that we, in our
own small way, are merely custodians of this sport whose traditions and rich history are much
bigger than all of us.
When you talk to the real legends of the sport – one thing stands out – respect. Respect for all
those involved in the sport at every level, respect for ideas and to anyone who sincerely want to
make a difference and good manners and courtesy to everybody. For they know that the real
value of our sport does not lie in the metal of trophies but in the hard work, passion, memories
and friendships that lie behind them.
auckland badminton
There is little point in bemoaning the lack of funds or profile we receive, it’s time to do something
about it, to start one step at a time building a stronger future for our sport and to remember how
we have done that in the past. We need people who are humble enough to learn, wise enough to
openly share ideas and smart enough to find what works in practice today, who respect the sport
and all those taking part in it. We need to recognise that our love of the sport is more important
than any differences we may have, to focus our passion to work together for a common goal – to
make our sport great again. If we truly respect those that built up our sport when our Association
was first formed – and have given so much - then we owe it to them and ourselves to do all we
can to make that happen.
