BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Age:        19 (at date of employment)
                    18 (when examination process commences)

Vision:             At least 20/50 uncorrected each eye, corrected to 20/20 if glasses are worn. If a
                    successful contact lens wearer for at least one (1) year prior to testing, there is
                    no minimum uncorrected requirement; however, both eyes must be corrected to
                    20/20, 120o peripheral vision. Normal color perception.

Hearing:            Normal

Health:             Mental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform with
                    reasonable accommodation, the essential job functions for this position.

Education:          High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Military:           Not required. However, if military service has been performed, an honorable
                    discharge or separation must have been obtained.

Residency:          Applicants must currently reside within a 200 mile radius of Departmental
                    Headquarters and must have been a resident of that geographic area for at least
                    three (3) years prior to applying. Being out of the residence area for educational
                    purposes or military service may be acceptable pending Departmental review.
                    Applicants must be residents of the United States or an alien admitted for
                    permanent residency authorized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service
                    to work in the United States.

Driver's License: Must possess a valid motor vehicle license at time of application. Right to
                  operate a motor vehicle may not have been suspended or revoked within twelve
                  (12) months of application. Must obtain Vermont operator's license upon
                  acceptance.

                               VERMONT AUXILIARY TROOPER
                                ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following are considered essential job functions for the position of Vermont Auxiliary
Trooper. This position mainly functions in the Marine Program and the Snowmobile
Enforcement Program with occasional duty to assist State Troopers directing traffic at special
events or in other non-routine functions.

General

•   Successfully completes initial law enforcement training activities and annual training
    activities to maintain certification as a law enforcement officer, including first aid and CPR,
    weapons qualification and marine orientation.
•   Must have a Vermont driver’s license.
•   Must operate various items of law enforcement equipment including marine radar.
•   Perform various first aid and CPR procedures.
•   Testify in court.
•   Must be able to physically take subjects into custody.
•   Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing.
•   Write reports using appropriate grammar, symbols, and punctuation.
•   Gather information from a variety of sources to complete inspection forms, prepare accident
    reports and various department specific activity and time reports.
•   Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines to determine compliance of boat or
    snowmobile operators with applicable laws and regulations.
•   Load, unload, and fire handgun from a variety of body positions, and ensure levels of
    proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
•   Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents

Marine

•   Work on marine craft on lakes and ponds in Vermont, inspecting boats for compliance with
    applicable laws, issuing inspection stickers, warnings, and tickets.
•   Must have the ability to meet the open water survival standards comparable to the
    standards and conditions utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard, while wearing a personal
    flotation device. (A waiver is available to certified lifeguards or other approved swimmer.)
•   Must not display signs of panic while in the water.
•   Must be able to swim/float 100 yards using any stroke.
•   Marine activities include occasional work during inclement weather conditions, patrolling for
    boaters in trouble, affecting search and rescue activities, and providing assistance to the
    boating public.
•   Must board boats underway, and at times in rough seas, to accomplish inspections.
•   Operate marine vessels during the day and night, in emergency situations, during periods of
    congested traffic, or inclement weather with reduced visibility.
•   Uses marine band and police radio using proper codes and procedures.
•   During the routine performance of duties, searches various watercrafts to detect compliance
    with marine laws.
•   Performs tasks that require lifting, carrying, or dragging heavy objects, such as removing
    hazards to navigation from waterways.
•   Must be capable of loading/unloading boats from trailers.

Snow Machine

•   Operate snow machines on Vermont trails during winter months in order to inspect
    snowmobiles and check for proper operation of same.
•   Operation of snow machines may be during periods of inclement weather with extreme
    temperatures and reduced visibility.
•   Must be capable of loading snow machines both off and onto trailers.
•   May be required to lift and push moderately heavy weights, such as snow machines that
    may become mired in snow.
•   Must be able to traverse deep snow.
•   Must be able to participate in search and rescue operations with a snow machine.

Other

•   May be required to stand for long periods of time while directing traffic at area events.
•   May be required to lift moderately heavy weights, such as when changing tires or when
    offering assistance to disabled motor vehicle operators.
