Welcome you to our third annual Sun Country Bull Sale
It is exciting times to be in the beef industry! It is great to finally see cattle producers excited and optimistic about the future. I think everything is
lined up for some very good years ahead. North American cow numbers are the lowest we have seen in over 50 years. We have finally ‘eaten”
our way through the back log of beef supplies and as a result, we are seeing near record cattle prices. It is great for beef producers to finally be
able to plan for the future again, without having to use every survival instinct they had.
With this new optimism, come some challenges. The spread between the best and the ordinary cattle is going to continue to widen. I don’t think
it has ever been more important to produce the best product possible. In order to do this, you need to know the marketplace, and it is more
important than ever to source the best genetics you can find. Shorthorn influenced feeder calves are selling for premium prices, particularly in
Western Canadian feeder markets. Being black hided is no longer enough to get the market top prices. As a result, more and more cattlemen
are looking at their options and today’s Shorthorns offer a viable option.
This breed has been recognized as a maternal breed for many years, and it will always be a great maternal breed.. The demand for Shorthorn
cross replacement females is not even close to being met. This represents a great opportunity. Today’s Shorthorns do much more than this
as they are very efficient at converting feed into beef, and they can do this on high roughage rations. They also have excellent carcass traits
and the beef industry took serious notice of the Shorthorn breed when the highest premium ever paid by Cargill in Western Canada was paid
on a set of over 100 Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross steers. Shorthorns have proven to have outstanding ability to marble, and this is extremely
important when our grading system is marbling based.
We are very proud of the set of bulls we have on offer in this sale, and without any doubt the quality is the deepest we have ever offered. We
have tried to develop them the same way we have done in the past that is, on a high roughage ration designed for optimum growth rather than
maximum growth. As a result the bulls are athletic and sound. These bulls have been bred and fed to last! We have worked hard to design and
develop cattle that are trouble free and you will find that almost the entire offering was born unassisted with reasonable birth weights. We also
feel that calving ease may be as important, or even more important than birth weights.
One of the main changes in this year’s test and sale is the new management and ownership of the farm and sale facility. Jim and Sarah Anderson
purchased the farm and sale facility from Gerry and Betty Wyatt early in 2010. They are an enthusiastic young couple and I think they have done
an outstanding job of managing our bull test. We have found them to be great to work with and we look forward to working with them, hopefully
for a long time into the future.
If you cannot come to see the bulls in person, we invite you to contact any of the owners or the sale representatives. We will do our best to
discuss the bulls as honestly as we can.
We hope you can be with us on April 16th for our sale. Plan to come early for a complimentary lunch and to visit with other cattle producers.

Grant Alexander (for the Sun Country group)

 Sun Country Philosophy...
 • We develop our bulls for optimal growth with a set target of 3 lb/day. The ration fed is a high roughage ration consisting of chopped hay, silage
and screening pellets. Our 112 day test ended on March 3rd. We will provide current weights and scrotal circumference information prior on
 sale day.
 • We will provide useful information on the bulls. The bulls have been performance tested and have passed a breeding soundness exam. If
you want more information on any of the bulls contact the owners at any time. Nobody knows these bulls and their background as well as the
owners do. We would be pleased to answer any questions in an honest and no pressure manner. Once you have all the information you need,
you can make the best decision as to what bulls will work best for your herd.
 • Every bull in this sale has passed the most scrutinizing selection process we can provide. That is, the owners have carefully selected every
bull on its own merits, and every bull has met our expectations first. Any bull that is unsound in any way has already been eliminated from the
 sale.
 • Every bull selling is guaranteed to be free of TH. All bulls have been either tested for TH or verified to be free of the TH defect by pedigree.
 • We believe in customer service. We will assist you in any way we can to make your bull buying experience as good as possible.
 • We will keep your bull purchases free of charge until May 10th, after which you will be charged at cost for the feed consumed by the bulls.
Please read our bull warranty and if you have any questions, please ask any of the owners. We would strongly advise all bull buyers who decide
to leave their bull purchases for any period of time after the sale, to insure them for the purchase value. An insurance agent will be available
 on sale day.
 • We will, wherever possible, assist in arranging transportation of your bull purchases, if required. We would ask for the buyer to help with this
 as well.
 • We are offering you a set of bulls that comes from a wide genetic base, that have been gathered from around the world. You the buyer can
select what you feel will assist your breeding program, at prices you feel you can afford.

Horseshoe Creek - Major Leroy is siring some of the thickest , easiest
fleshing cattle we have ever produced. He is siring calves that have extra
muscle and butt. Our first Leroy daughters are now in production, and they
have beautiful udders and are milking well. Semex International purchased

C year. He has been used at McBeth and Uluru for the past 4 seasons with no
calving difficulties. Semex purchased the world semen rights on Ruffian in

E 2008 and are now “Sold Out”. Quoting from the Semex catalogue “Ruffian
was one of the highlights of the 2008 Semex summer tour and his progeny
displayed exceptional muscling, style and body depth. Use Ruffian to increase

and sold for $7400 to Remitall Cattle Co., Olds, AB. When Remitall

him. He was a deep red color, homozygous polled and tremendously
thick and smooth. In our opinion, he was probably the greatest bull of
the Leader line, which did so much to improve the breed in that era. We

of today’s genetics and I think you will agree that these four sons prove

good feet and legs. He is moderate framed, deep sided and thick topped

Mist’s Return is an ET full Irish son of the legendary Highfield Irish Mist . He
is one of the easiest calving sires we have ever used and we are now getting
our fourth set of calves from our heifers sired by him. So far, all have been
born unassisted with the exception of one backwards calf. His calves are
moderate framed and very easy fleshing and have amazing hair. This is a
                    great maternal line.

Look at this bull - a Ruffian out of a Buster 14K daughter. This This guy’s mother, 21P is maybe the widest, thickest cow we
has proved to be a great combination for us. Easy fleshing on have and very easy keeping. Out of our calving ease bull,
both sides, he proved it by gaining 4.13 pounds per day. Sovereign.

We also realize that breeding season is also a very busy time on most farms. We would ask that you check your new bulls periodically, so
that if there are problems, we can hear about them sooner rather than later. This is equally important for the bull buyer as well. If your bull s
is not breeding, or becomes injured, it is important to resolve the problem as soon as possible in the breeding season.

K EPDs are specific to each breed and cannot be compared across different breeds. Not only do they incorporate the performance of
individual animals, but also the performance of all its relatives. EPDs indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for

    Milk
A bull’s Milk EPD is determined by his daughter’s ability to wean heavier calves than her contemporaries. Just because a cow weans
a heavier calf each year does not necessarily mean her Milk EPD should be the highest in the herd. The performance of her calf can
also be attributed to the dam’s or sire’s growth genetics or a number of environmental factors. Milk EPDs can be too high for your
environmental conditions especially in severe environmental conditions and can have a negative impact on rebreeding rates.

Here are three flush mate brothers sired by Pheasant Creek Leader 4th. We selected two of our very best red donors to use the last semen from
Leader 4th on and the results have been outstanding. Their dam is our Red Sue donor, who is a direct daughter of CF Roan Sue 644 TP who
has been considered to be a model Shorthorn female for several years. We have changed our minds constantly as to which of these is the best, S
but they all have some outstanding qualities. These bulls are totally unique genetically in the breed, and they combine some of the best genetics
from the past and the present. Besides being genetically unique, they are phenotypically unique, and offer an excellent outcross opportunity. They
are moderate, sound made and thick. They all have excellent testicles. They have very moderate BWs and they should be good choices for use
                                                                                                                                                     E
on heifers. You will drive many miles to find more unique genetics and have 3 full brothers to choose from. After seeing how these bulls have
developed, we certainly wish we had more semen from their sire. We feel these bulls have a lot to offer the breed and the entire beef industry! S
