ELEMENT – any substance that cannot be broken
down by heat, light, or electricity. There are about 109
elements. Ninety occur naturally—2 occur in nature for
a brief while—17 are man-made.
    American Revolution – about 20 elements known
    Civil War – about 60 elements known
    1900 – 85 elements known


ATOM – smallest part of an element with the properties
of the element. These are the building blocks of matter.

COMPOUND – chemical combination of elements that
creates a substance different from the original elements.
For example—water.

MOLECULE – smallest part of a compound that still
has the properties of the compound (water).

All elements can be divided into various categories.
One category is:
     METALS/NONMETALS & METALLOIDS
METALS –
  Luster -- shine
  Ductile -- wire
  Malleable – hammered/ bent
  Conducts electricity
  Conducts heat
  Solid at room temperature except for ___________
  Gray colored except for ______________________

NONMETALS--
  Opposite of metals
  Colorful
  Most are gases
  Brittle – breaks easily

METALLOIDS--
     Have some characteristics of metals and some
characteristics of nonmetals. Metalloids are located
along the ―steps‖ on the periodic table. Example –
silicon chips--
