Cross Leaves $2.9 Million Gift to Math Department
right W. “Bill” Cross, The University of Southern Mississippi alumni and benefactor who established the university’s first endowed chair and funded one of the first scholarship programs in the department of mathematics, died July 26, 2007 at his home in Baker, La, leaving behind a gift of approximately $2.9 million for the university’s Department of Mathematics. The Wright W. and Annie Rea Cross Chair in Mathematics and Endowment for Undergraduate Research was established through a charitable remainder trust in 1997. Mr. Cross also established the Wright W. Cross Endowment in 1994, which provides scholarships for students in mathematics annually. To date, approximately 45 students have received a Cross scholarship. Mr. Cross received a bachelor of science in mathematics from Southern Miss (then Mississippi Southern College) in 1951. A non-traditional student, he earned his college degree 17 years after graduating from Laurel High School. While at the university, he caught the entre-
preneurial spirit, working in several other businesses before eventually forming and managing three successful companies: Corrosion Test Supplies, Corrosion Materials, and Wright Engineering, Inc. In 1997, he was inducted into the Southern Miss Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2001, Mr. Cross was recognized as a charter member of the university’s Gallery of Benefactors. His wife, Annie Rea Allen Cross, now deceased, also attended Southern Miss. “The Wright W. and Annie Rea Cross Endowed Chair in Mathematics and Endowment for Undergraduate Research represents an unparalleled opportunity for the Department of Mathematics to foster the growth of excellence in undergraduate mathematics,” said Dr. C. S. Chen, chair of the Department of Mathematics. “It is important to recognize the enormous impact that his contributions have on the future academic programs in the math department at Southern Miss. It can and does make a difference in helping students be able to realize their hopes and dreams.” “Mr. Cross achieved his goal
of making a difference in the lives of others,” said Dr. Wallace Pye, who served as chair of the math department from 1990 – 2005. “As long as there is a math department at Southern Miss and students who will study math, his gift will truly make a difference.” Just as important, according to Dr. Pye, is the philanthropic example Mr. Cross set for others. “Mr. Cross’ gift was the best thing that could happen for us,” said Dr. Pye. “Prior to his gift, we had very little to offer students in the way of scholarships. Now others are following his lead.”
Parents Establish Haley Scholarship In Memory of Son
arents Ray and Frieda Kelly and sister Julia Haley have established the Jason D. Haley Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Jason Haley, the late son of Ray and Frieda Kelly. The scholarhsip will be awarded annually to students in need. To raise additional money for the memorial scholarship and other local charities, friends and family of Jason Haley hosted the 2nd annual memorial golf tournament at the Windance Country Club in Gulfport on July 28. Over 100 people participated in the tournament, which was orga-
nized by Lance Geil, Troy Peterson, Teddy Rose, Jason Streetman and Mitch Tinsley. In addition to the scholarship, proceeds from the event were also used to benefit the Make-AWish Foundation of Mississippi, Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree Program, and to support families of deployed Mississippi Army National Guard troops. Proceeds from the event will be used to award a $1,000 scholarship to a Southern Miss student in the fall semester of 2007.
Room 227 Named in Honor of The Gold Leaf Society
he mysterious Gold Leaf Society, a group composed of individuals committed to the betterment of the university, has purchased the first naming opportunity in the Thad Cochran Center. Room number 227, a boardroom equipped with a conference table, 16 conference table chairs, and 14 side chairs, will be named in honor of The Gold Leaf Society. Although The Gold Leaf Society has been a supporter of Southern Miss for a number of years, its origin, symbolism and membership remain a mystery. Represented by an emblem containing a gold leaf and seven stars, The Gold Leaf Society states that its mission is to work for the good of The University of Southern Mississippi. On July 7, 2007, The Gold Leaf gave the first of seven installments, totaling $25,000, for the naming opportunity in the Thad Cochran Center. A formal dedication of the room was held on September 7. Named in honor of The Gold Leaf, the room will feature and highlight
the history and tradition of The University of Southern Mississippi. Two plaques will be displayed in the room; the first will feature the sacred Gold Leaf emblem; the second will dedicate the room. The Gold Leaf Society has also requested that seven historic campus photos be displayed throughout the room.
The secretive society has given a number of mysterious gifts to the university in recent years. In November 2005, a rock bearing the emblem of The Gold Leaf appeared on the lawn of Danforth Chapel. On the occasion of the 97th anniversary of Southern Miss, The Gold Leaf Society selected 21 outstanding faculty and staff with a mini-
mum of seven years of service to the university to be recognized for their efforts to Southern Miss. Each recipient received a letter, emblem and holder for the emblem to display proudly. The secret society has also given a number of donations, with each check containing the number seven in the amount. “Our mission is being accomplished through the making of financial and other gifts to individuals associated with the university whom we believe bring honor to the university through their work and lives,” states The Gold Leaf Society. “Membership of The Gold Leaf is and always will remain anonymous so that the focus of the gift we bestow will be on the recipient.” Room 227 was the first naming opportunity purchased in the Thad Cochran Center. Other naming opportunities are still available. For more information contact the Southern Miss Foundation at 601.266.5602 or Barbara Ross, Director of the Union and Programs at 601266-4396.

n August, The University of South-
would be stepping down from his position as executive director of the Southern Miss Foundation. His resignation was effective Aug. 31. A national search for a successor will begin after consulting with the alumni and foundation boards in September. Ryan, a 1975 Southern Miss graduate from Bay St. Louis, became director of the Foundation in 2003 after serving for eight years as district manager of corporate and external affairs for Bellsouth’s Pine Belt area. He guided the Campaign for Southern Miss, the university’s capital campaign, to a successful conclusion in 2004 when the target goal of $100 million was surpassed. He also directed fundraising efforts for the Foundation’s Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, which provided assistance to faculty, staff and students impacted by the storm. “We’re grateful for the work that Tim has done for his alma mater, and we look forward to his continued support of the university,” Dr. Saunders said. Ryan has also guided ongoing private fundraising efforts, including for the Trent

Dieth serves as the development officer for the university’s College of Business, a position he has held since January 2004. “Southern Miss is a great place with a bright future. I’m excited that I’ll be able to lend a hand in leading the Foundation and the development activities of the university,”
said Dieth. A native of New Orleans, La., and a graduate of the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, Dieth has 19 years of experience working in funds development and management with nonprofit organizations after a 26-year marketing and management career with Chevron USA. He has served in successfully completed capital campaigns, one at Tulane University, which was completed at $254 million against a goal of $250 million, and one at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, which was completed at $13.5 million against a goal of $10 million. He has also served in leadership positions in strategic management, planned giving, alumni affairs, publications, major gifts and annual funds. He served as president of the Montreat Conference Center of the Mountain Retreat Association in the Presbyterian Church (USA), executive director of alumni affairs and annual giving and director of major gifts at Tulane, vice president for development at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and president of American Personnel Services Inc., a subsidiary of Chevron.

very gift can affect the future and success of The University of Southern Mississippi, no matter the size. A $20 gift was recently received from a Southern Miss alum in Picayune, Miss. with a note stating “not a lot of money but a lot of love for Southern Miss.” Even gifts of this size can make a differenece. If every Southern Miss alum gave $20 to the univeristy, the impact would be enormous. Please consider making a gift today. Gifts can be mailed to The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation, 118 College Drive, Box 10026, Hattiesburg, MS 39406-0001. Donations can also be made online at www.usm.edu/foundation. Every Gift Can Make a Difference
Cornerstone: How important is philanthropy to the overall success of any university and specifically for your plans for Southern Miss? Dr. Martha D. Saunders: It’s very important, and it has always been important. First of all, for public universities, the public dollar is in high demand. That is the way of our world. So we are having to find other sources of income to continue to do what we do and to grow. We’ve increased our external funding opportunities through grants and contracts. We have raised tuition but there are limits there. With tuition, we know there’s a tipping point that students can bear before they can’t afford to come to college. And, of course, we’re always looking for ways to do more with less. Like any business, we have to keep looking for efficiency. Then that leaves one source of funding and that is philanthropic giving. It’s very important to us. There is another side of philanthropic giving that you don’t hear as much about. We rely heavily on external parties, alumni, friends of the university, to finance programs. How should we shape our programming so that it serves industry? Philanthropic giving can help us to do that. Generous donors can give us funds and say, “I want this to go to an endowed professorship in this particular area because I know that to be important to this industry.” It is a way of shaping programming to better serve our students and the regional industries. Philanthropic giving not only helps us do what we already do. It helps us do it better. CS: Increasing this effort has been high on your agenda for the university to move forward. How do you see this being accomplished? Dr. Saunders: The first thing we need to do is development planning. One of the earliest things we are doing is to look at the university’s strategic planning. What are we doing well? What are we not doing well? Where are our strengths? Where are our weaknesses? We will build a plan from that. Important questions are “What are we doing well and what could we do if we had more money?” Planning, again, is key. We have just approved our newest master facility plan for the Hattiesburg campus. Fall 2007
That is very inspiring. (Note: See it from a link on www. usm.edu) The best thing about master planning is that you can “see” it – how we can grow in the next ten years and beyond. With a master plan you can see a proposed building, you can see a map, and you can see the land. Planning generates a lot of excitement. Another key way to accomplish successful philanthropic giving is building lasting relationships. We need to cultivate our friends and our alumni, and focus on having meaningful interactions with people without having our hands out. Relationships become mutually beneficial and develop out of shared interest and trust. There’s a benefit to all so we need to really cultivate goodwill and do it in an organized fashion. CS: Is it a matter of promoting the university to donors and outsiders or should there be more focus on connecting with alumni and those that owe their successes to Southern Miss? Dr. Saunders: It’s a little bit selling; it’s a lot of relationship building. We tell the story and then we thank folks for their important part in the Southern Miss success story. We have already enjoyed so much support from so many people that we must spend more time thanking them. I would also add a stewardship component. We want to be sure that we are being good stewards of the gifts that we have. People will ask, “What have you done with the gifts I’ve already given you and how are you using them?” Stewardship is an important element to our continuing success. CS: What do you see as your role as president of the university in the overall fundraising program? In your role as president, how active do you want to be involved in fundraising? Dr. Saunders: I’m the head cheerleader. It is very important that I take an active hand because, while other people do the heavy lifting of the university, I represent the university. And, if I’m not at the table then there is always the question of its importance. It is very important that I take the lead role in fundraising. CS: How have your experiences at other universi-
ties helped shape your view towards fundraising? Do you have a better understanding or appreciation for it since you’ve had many positions in higher education? Dr. Saunders: I’ve had various opportunities along the way and I am a chronic volunteer-er. A lot of times, for example, when I was a faculty member and there was a need for a campus chair for a capital campaign, I would say, “I’ll do that!” I learned a great deal about fundraising that way. Many opportunities began to appear and I was quick to jump into leadership roles. I learned another side of the university and that made a big difference. CS: You talk about being a chronic volunteer. At the Foundation we know there needs to be involvement from the Board of Directors and volunteers in general, and for others like the deans, faculty and staff. How do you see their role in fundraising? Dr. Saunders: Fundraising is a big volunteer enterprise. When you think of things like annual drives, it involves a whole lot of people who give their time. Often, it’s young alums that are passionate about school. It takes on a whole different flavor because it’s an organization of volunteers. Again, you thank them. You find ways of making them feel good about the work they have done. It involves constant, constant communication. CS: Should there be more focus on money raised or on increasing participation of giving? Dr. Saunders: Participation is key. We all fantasize about someone walking into my office and dropping $100 million but that’s not how it works. We want to be in planned gifts. We want people to cultivate the habit of giving. CS: Would you say that there are universal aspects of fundraising that apply to all universities, or is it more specific to the school and region it is located in? Dr. Saunders: There are a lot of universal aspects. It is a universal tenet that planning is critical. Also, development is a daily driven occupation. You’ve got to do the research. You’ve got to know these constituents. It’s much more scientific these days. It’s a matter of looking at the lay of the land and organizing your efforts accordingly.

Editor’s note: From time to time, the Southern Miss Foundation receives questions from donors on a variety of subjects dealing with philanthropic gift support. The following three questions are among some of the most common answered by the Foundation staff.
Northrop Grumman Donates $2,000 to Science and Technology
orthrop Grumman Corporation Ship Systems recently gave a $2,000 donation to The University of Southern Mississippi’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. The money will be used for $500 book scholarships for NSBE members for the 2007-08 school year. About 40 Southern Miss College of Science and Technology students belong to NSBE, two of whom interned this summer at Northrop Grumman Corporation Ship Systems in Pascagoula. NSBE members will also be given a tour of the shipyard this fall.
Why does Southern Miss, a state university, need private support? Southern Miss is a state-assisted, not taxsupported institution. State allocations meet only a portion of the budget needs. Over the years, that number has fallen and it is now only around 24% and it is expected to decrease even further. That is why private donations to the university are so important. Is my gift to Southern Miss tax deductible? Yes. Because the Southern Miss Foundation is qualified as a taxexempted organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, all gifts to The Foundation are tax deductible. For how much you can deduct, consult your tax adviser and the IRS Website.

continued from page 5
Any university is limited by what the opportunities are. Some universities have better opportunities because there are just more dollars out there or because they have better connections. The universities that have the best relationships raise more money. CS: With the centennial approaching in two years, does philanthropic giving become top priority or is it just another piece to the puzzle? Dr. Saunders: The centennial is a wonderful, significant observation for our university. The centennial triggers an investment in the next century of The University of Southern Mississippi. It gives us a meaningful, personal opportunity to say this is our 100th birthday, now how do we want to look at the next 100 years? I see philanthropic giving as driving the centennial celebration. CS: Do you have a picture of where you want endowments to be, where you want annual giving to be, and other aspects of giving?
Dr. Saunders: I can only speak generally but, any school, and Southern Miss is no exception, needs more scholarships. More is needed in the way of endowments because that’s how you shape programming. Professional development money for staff and faculty is hard money to raise because you can’t put your name on it or put a plaque on it. As we begin to plan, I would love to see funding that supports international enterprises for things like faculty exchanges and additional funding to speed research. Support that enriches the professional careers of faculty members is important. One of the things I say often and it sounds kind of strange, but there is a shelf life. We do everything we can to hire the best faculty but then, if we don’t invest in these people, they lose their edge. If all you know is what you learned in graduate school and you’re not being active in your lab, if you’re not being sent to conferences with the cutting edge issues, then you start to get dull. If faculty
become dull, then our students aren’t far behind. So I see professional development as a critical area. I would also like to see funding for other things on campus. Environmental issues are becoming more and more important, for example. In addition to bricks and mortar, we have additional needs in our multicampus university – Hattiesburg and the Gulf Coast – that will only be met with external fundraising. CS: Any final thoughts on philanthropic giving? Dr. Saunders: The future is bright, and I am very encouraged. There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and a lot of people are ready to be around the table and help us move on. I will be very surprised if we don’t start to see some really important things begin to fall into place. We are a great, national university and we are moving in the right direction.

Annual Fund Donor Report, 2006-07
Annual Giving Program Posts Second-Straight Record Year
or the second-consecutive year, alumni and friends of The University of Southern Mississippi answered the call when it came to giving back. The Annual Giving program -- the front line of philanthropy at Southern Miss -- posted another record year in terms of gifts and pledges, receiving more than $162,000 in the 2006-07 academic year. This comes on the heels of the previous mark of more than $113,000 in 2005-06. While overall donations to the Annual Giving campaign have increased dramatically -- nearly a 43 percent increase from the previous year -- there was also an impressive jump in overall participation, with 2,366 donors in 2006-07 compared to 1,793 in 2005-06, an increase of 32 percent. These increases are significant to the university as the Annual Giving program helps make the educational experience a better one for each and every Southern Miss student.
The Annual Giving program at Southern Miss serves as the building block for all fundraising at the university. Through the generous support from alumni, the Annual Giving program provides funds, in excess of those gained from tuition and fees, for each of the five colleges, the Gulf Coast campus and the university’s greatest needs, to use toward scholarships, technology needs, educational resources and for recruiting outstanding professors. Funds raised through the Annual Giving Campaign are primarily received through direct telephone contacts. A group of trained student fundraisers, known as the Eagle Callers, make the majority of these calls, requesting pledges and gifts. Contact is also made through direct mail solicitation, which proved to be a successful facet of the program last year. The following Donor Report recognizes more than 2,366 individuals and companies which contributed to the 2006-07 Annual Fund. As the 2007-08 school year begins, the university needs continued support and meaningful commitments as we continue to move in the right direction. Please be generous with your gift to the Annual Fund this year, and help make Southern Miss the best it can be.

Eagle Callers Raise Crucial Funds for University
group of trained student fundraisers known as the Eagle Callers are responsible for soliciting funds for the Annual Giving program. Comprised of nearly 40 students and 4 student supervisors with 13 calling stations, this enthusiastic group works ten months a year, five days a week to raise funds for the universities five colleges and the Gulf Coast campus. According to Alicia Lane, Director of Annual Giving, Eagle Callers began making phone calls in August. The student callers initially contact previous donors, then Southern Miss alumni, followed by friends of the university. Last year the Annual Giving program saw a 43 percent increase in the amount of funds raised and a 32 percent increase in donor participation. For more information on Eagle Callers or giving to the Annual Fund, contact Alicia Lane at 601.266.6680.
