Company Overview

Terabeam/HXI supplies millimeter wave compo-
nents and subsystems to support military and
commercial systems worldwide. Fast prototyp-
ing services and custom-engineered products
ranging from single functions to highly inte-
grated assemblies are provided. Products in-
clude transceivers, low noise and power amplifi-
ers, frequency multipliers, switches and ferrite-
based products in a core frequency range of 18
to 110 GHz. Custom products have included
transceivers for UAV and helicopter landing
systems, as well as radio links at 60 and 71-76
GHz, which are sold exclusively through Proxim

Company History

Terabeam/HXI was founded as Harmonix
Corporation in 1992. The company was
originally located in Woburn, Massachusetts and
was a pioneer in the development of short-range,
high data rate, wireless communication links for
densely populated areas, such as Tokyo, where
connection to fiber was not readily available or
too expensive to be considered. The solution
was a 100 MB, 60 GHz radio link that could
easily be deployed on rooftops, behind windows,
etc. Financial backing came from Omron
Corporation and SoftBank, both Japanese
companies, and the capability to develop and
manufacture the radio link was built up around

Facilities and Equipment

Terabeam/HXI is located in a 17,000 square foot
facility in the Ward Hill East Industrial Park in Hav-
erhill, Massachusetts. This location provides en-
gineering and manufacturing space for millimeter
wave components & subsystems, as well as for
our Gigalink millimeter wave radios that are sold
by Proxim Wireless. We moved to this larger facil-
ity in November 2005 to accommodate the growth
that we have been experiencing in both product
areas. We have also incorporated manufacturing
assets from the former Telaxis plant in South
Deerfield, Massachusetts (see Company History).
We have a fully instrumented Harris model 1602A
compact antenna range (see photo below left) with

Technology/Engineering

The Terabeam/HXI engineering team is staffed by
former employees of New England millimeter wave
(MMW) component companies and government
contractors. These senior engineers have an average
of 25 years experience, specifically in MMW
technology and products. Among the products
designed and built by these engineers in their careers
are 35 GHz landing system transceivers, 35 and 94
GHz missile seekers, 77 GHz automotive radar front
ends, 18 to 38 GHz point-to-point radio front ends, a
complete 60 GHz radio (GigaLink), radiometers,
MilSATCOM upconverters and test sets, ELINT
receivers and weather radar components. Military
programs include TALS, SADARM, Longbow, MilStar,
NESP, FAB-T, Patriot PAC-3 and many others.

Catalog Components

Terabeam/HXI offers a broad range of standard catalog components for use in prototyping new
systems and for low volume requirements. These components consist of single function modules
that can be easily connected using waveguide or coax. The modules use mature technology such
GaAs MMICs and beam lead semiconductor devices, resulting in well established performance
characteristics. The use of many common parts results in low cost and fast delivery.

The table below outlines the availability of our standard product lines within the millimeter wave

 DESCRIPTION

  The HLNA Series of Low Noise Amplifiers covers
 the range from 18 to 100 GHz. A wide variety of
 gain and bandwidth combinations are available to
 provide the designer with a solution for most appli-
 cations. MMIC technology is employed for high
 reliability and repeatability.

  The amplifiers can be used as gain blocks in LO
 chains and test equipment, and to lower system
 noise figure in communication and radar systems.

   Noise figures as low as 2.2 dB and 1 dB
 compression points as high as +18 dBm can be
 obtained. Multiple stages can be combined to
 increase gain. For example, gain of 40 dB has
 been obtained over 50-60 GHz.

   LNA’s can be combined with power amplifiers for
 greater P1dB output power levels. Amplifiers can
 also be integrated with mixers and other compo-
 nents for custom applications.

DESCRIPTION

  The HMPA Series of Medium Power Amplifiers
covers the range from 18 to 100 GHz. A wide vari-
ety of gain and bandwidth combinations provide the
system designer with a solution for most applica-
tions. MMIC technology is employed for high reli-
ability and repeatability.

 The amplifiers can be used as gain blocks in LO
chains and test equipment, and in transmitters for
communication and radar systems.

  Multiple stages can be combined to increase gain.
Gain of 40 dB has been obtained over 50-60 GHz.
These units can be combined with power
amplifiers to obtain higher P1dB output power
levels.

 The Amplifiers can be integrated with mixers and
other components to form custom subassemblies
for specific applications.

DESCRIPTION

  The HHMPA Series of High Power Amplifiers
covers the frequency range from 18 – 100 GHz. A
wide variety of gain and bandwidth combinations
provide the designer with a solution for most ap-
plications. MMIC technology is employed for high
reliability and repeatability.

 The amplifiers can be used in transmitters for
communication and radar systems.

 Multiple devices can be combined to increase
output power. For example, several watts of
power have been obtained at 35 GHz.

 The Amplifiers can be integrated with
upconverters and other components to form
custom subassemblies for specific applications.

                                                 Waveguide Power Combiners


DESCRIPTION

The HPC series of waveguide power
combiners offers custom power combining
configurations, including, but not limited to,
2-way, 3-way, 4-way, 6-way and 8-way
combiners. Integral phase matching
structures enable optimum power combining
efficiency when combining multiple power
amplifiers or signal sources.

Custom mechanical designs are provided to
match customer port locations, size, weight,
etc. Combiners are reciprocal and can also be
used as power splitters. In combination with
the HHPA series of power amplifiers, very high
(watts) power levels can be achieved with
good combining efficiency.

                                            Active Frequency Multipliers

 DESCRIPTION

  The HAFM Series of active multipliers is
 available in models ranging from 18 to 140
 GHz. A wide variety of multiplication fac-
 tors from X2 up to X12 provide the cus-
 tomer with design flexibility for many appli-
 cations. These multipliers can be cascaded
 to achieve higher order multiplication fac-
 tors.

 Active multipliers are often used in LO
 chains in radars and communication
 systems, allowing the use of frequency
 sources at low frequencies. Multipliers
 also find use as frequency extenders for
 test equipment.

 Standard units are available that can be
 driven with 10 mw or less. Outputs to 0.5 W
 are obtained with P-HEMT and abrupt
 varactors. Power outputs of 2W @ 35 GHz,
 300 mW @ 50 GHz, and 100 mW @ 94
 GHz have been obtained using additional
 power amplifier stages.

                                  Broadband Frequency Multipliers

DESCRIPTION

 The HMM Series Multipliers cover the range from
18 - 100 GHz. A wide variety of doubler and tripler
designs provide the designer with a solution for many
applications. Full waveguide band units are available
through 100 GHz. These multipliers are used as
frequency extenders in test equipment and as mixer
LO’s. Standard units are available to be driven with
10-40 mW and high power options are available for 100
mW drive. No DC bias is required.

 The HMM Series Multipliers use a pair of GaAs beam
lead diodes on a planar circuit mounted in a low loss
waveguide structure. Their high bandwidths and small
size make them an ideal choice in subsystems. The
HFM family of varactor multipliers are used where
higher power handling is required.

                                        Varactor Frequency Multipliers


DESCRIPTION

The HFM Series Multipliers cover the range from
18 - 140 GHz. A wide variety of doubler, tripler, and
quadrupler designs provide the designer with a
solution for most applications to meet their specific
requirements. These multipliers are cascaded to
make higher order X6 and X9 multipliers. Multipliers
are used as frequency extenders in test equipment
and as mixer LO’s, generating higher millimeter
wave frequencies from lower microwave
frequencies. Standard units are available to be
driven with 50 mw to 1 W with abrupt varactors. Isis
stacked varactors are used for higher drive levels
from 500 mW to several watts. Power outputs of
2W @ 35 GHz, 300 mW @ 50 GHz, and 100 mW
@ 94 GHz have been obtained. Gold plated high-Q
waveguide mounts are used to achieve the highest
performance. No bias is required for these
multipliers. Multipliers can also be integrated with
amplifiers and input and output isolators.

                                                         Broadband Detectors


DESCRIPTION

The HFD series broadband detectors cover full
waveguide bands from 18 – 110 GHz . They
utilize a low loss finline structure mated to a zero
bias Schottky beam lead diode for maximum
output and bandwidth. The RF energy is con-
verted to a DC voltage resulting in a detector
mount having high levels of sensitivity over a
broad dynamic range. Since zero bias diodes
are used, no bias is required and both negative
and positive voltage outputs are available.
The HFD series detectors are used wherever
DC conversion of RF signals is required such as
with scalar measurement systems.

 Detectors can be optimized for specific
frequency coverage and can be matched as
pairs if required.

                                                        Balanced Upconverters


DESCRIPTION

 The HBUC series broadband balanced
upconverters cover a wide range of waveguide
bands from 18–110 GHz. They utilize a low loss
structure mated to a matched pair of GaAs
Schottky beam lead diodes for minimum conver-
sion loss and maximum bandwidth. Superior LO
noise suppression and LO-RF isolation values
are design features. Upconverters are used to
create a mm-wave signal by combining a lower
RF frequency with a higher mm wave frequency.
Dual signals, or double sideband are produced in
this way: LO ± IF (DSB). Optional RF filters are
offered to filter out the unwanted sideband and
produce a single sideband (SSB) up converter.
Biased versions are available for lower LO drive
levels.

                                                                 Harmonic Mixers

DESCRIPTION

 The HHM series broadband harmonic mixers
cover full waveguide bands from 18 – 110
GHz. They utilize a low loss finline structure
mated to a GaAs Schottky beam lead diode for
minimum conversion loss and maximum band-
width. The millimeter wave RF frequency is
down converted (using a low cost microwave
LO) to a lower frequency which can in turn
interface with a spectrum analyzer or
frequency counter.

 Two terminal mixers (waveguide RF,
combined coaxial LO/IF port) units are avail-
able for systems equipped with an internal
diplexer.

 Three terminal mixers (waveguide RF, coaxial
IF port, coaxial LO port) units are available for
systems without an internal diplexer.

DESCRIPTION

The HGM and HGV series Gunn Oscillators
cover the range from 7 – 100 GHz. A wide
variety of designs provide the user with a
solution for most applications. Units are
available with mechanical and/or electrical
tuning, providing many possible tuning
configurations. Superior frequency and power
stability are achieved using cavity design and
diode selection. Heaters can be provided to
achieve greater frequency stability.

 GaAs and InP Gunns are used depending on
the performance requirement. Cavity designs
are mated with the proper Gunn diode to
maximize performance.

Gunn oscillators are used as sources for
mixer LO’s, to drive multipliers, transmitters,
and radars. Options include voltage
regulators, hybrid heaters, isolators, heat
sinks, and thermal barriers.

DESCRIPTION

The HSW series of broadband PIN Diode
switches covers the waveguide bands
from 18 - 110 GHz. The switches utilize a
low loss finline structure with silicon or
GaAs beam lead diodes for minimum in-
sertion loss and maximum isolation. Supe-
rior performance in a compact size is fea-
tured in these designs. Gold plated hous-
ings are used to achieve maximum per-
formance and reliability. Full waveguide
band SPST units can be provided up to 60
GHz and 10 GHz bandwidths to 110 GHz.
SPDT units have up to 10 GHz bandwidth.

 Many options of on/off ratio values are of-
fered with low loss versions and isolation
levels up to 60 dB. Switches are available
with or without drivers with TTL drivers
standard and ECL drivers available as an
option.

DESCRIPTION

The HBSW series high power switches cover
strategic frequency bands where high RF power
is utilized. The switches incorporate multiple
semiconductor devices using monolithic
technology for very high RF power handling,
while maintaining low insertion loss and high
isolation. Gold plated housings are used to
achieve maximum performance and
reliability.

CW power handling at 94 GHz is 10 watts
minimum, while pulsed power handing is 1 kW
peak minimum. The standard switching speed
of 20 nS is much faster than competing ferrite
switches.

Flexibility in on/off ratio and switching speed
specifications is available. Standard 94 GHz unit
comes with integral TTL driver.

DESCRIPTION

The HVA series broadband PIN diode
attenuators cover the waveguide bands from
18 - 110 GHz. The attenuators are available
for applications requiring variations in power
levels using a control voltage. A 0 to + 5 V
tuning range is used to control the attenua-
tion level. This design utilizes a low loss
finline structure with beam lead diodes for
minimum insertion loss and optimum at-
tenuation flatness.

 Superior performance in a compact size are
features of this design. Gold plated housings
are used to achieve maximum performance
and reliability. Full waveguide bands are
covered up to 60 GHz.

 Attenuation level can be customized for in-
dividual applications. The table of specifica-

DESCRIPTION

  The HMI AND HMC series broadband ferrite
junction isolators and circulators are available
from 18 - 110 GHz. They utilize a low loss H-plane
structure in a modified Y-junction format to provide
minimum loss with maximum isolation and band-
width. 2 GHz bandwidths with 20 dB of isolation
are standard.

 The isolators are commonly utilized to buffer
mismatches and are often used on amplifier and
oscillator outputs. Circulators are commonly
employed as signal duplexers on transceivers
having a single antenna. The in-line port orientation
makes the mechanical interface more accessible
than standard Y-junction types. An access pocket
allows for blind flange mating.

Custom Components and Subsystems

Terabeam-HXI can draw upon its extensive standard component library as the basis
for custom components and integrated subassemblies. For new circuit and
component designs, modern microwave CAD tools are used to ensure efficient
performance tradeoffs, design analysis, optimization and design centering.
Mechanical design tools such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks are employed to complete
the design package.

Our engineering staff works closely with customers to determine and prioritize system
performance tradeoffs and to identify the appropriate product configuration to meet
cost and performance goals. A working knowledge of radar and communications
systems allows Terabeam/HXI to understand and address the affects of complex
problems and subtle component performance and interaction issues. Our broad
experience allows us to assume system integration tasks, freeing customer

BREACH OF CONTRACT, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY, FAILURE OF
ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OR ANY OTHER ECONOMIC LOSSES.

7.2 Statute of Limitations. Any action for breach of this Order or to enforce any
right hereunder shall be commenced within one (1) year after the cause of action
accrues, or reasonably could have been discovered, or it shall be deemed waived and
barred.

7.3 LIMIT ON LIABILITY. THE MAXIMUM LIABILITY OF
TERABEAM/HXI, AND ITS RELATED PARTIES, TAKEN AS A WHOLE, FOR
ANY AND ALL CLAIMS IN CONNECTION WITH THIS ORDER, THE
PRODUCTS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CLAIMS FOR BREACH OF
WARRANTY, BREACH OF CONTRACT, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY,
FAILURE OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OR OTHERWISE, SHALL IN NO
CIRCUMSTANCE EXCEED THE AGGREGATE AMOUNTS PAID TO
TERABEAM/HXI UNDER THIS ORDER.
SECTION 8 - MISCELLANEOUS Applicable Law and Venue. The validity,
construction and performance of this Order shall be governed by the domestic laws of
the State of Massachusetts, without giving effect to the principles of conflict of laws
thereof. The provisions of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the
International Sale of Goods shall not apply to this Agreement. The Parties agree to
the non-exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the State and Federal courts in Essex
County, Massachusetts. Assignment. All the terms and provisions of this
Agreement will be binding upon successors and permitted assigns of the Parties.
Non-Waiver. The failure by either Party hereto at any time to require performance
by the other Party or to claim a breach of any provision of this Agreement shall not
be construed as affecting any subsequent right to require the performance or to claim
a breach with respect thereto. Force Majeure. If the performance by a Party of any
of its obligations under this Agreement (other than payment obligations) shall be
interfered with by reason of any circumstances unforeseeable, irresistible and beyond
the reasonable control of that Party, then that Party shall be excused from such
performance while such circumstances exist and such additional period as may be
reasonably necessary to allow that Party to resume its performance. Severability;
Cumulative Remedies. Any provision of this Agreement that is unenforceable shall
not cause any other remaining provision to be ineffective or invalid. Except as
expressly set forth herein, the rights and remedies of the Parties will not be exclusive
and are in addition to any other rights or remedies of the Parties existing in law or in
equity. English Language. This Agreement and all documents given under it shall be
written in English language. In the event of inconsistency between any translated
version and the English version, the English version shall control. Modification of
Order. Except as set forth herein, no addition to or modification of this Agreement
shall be binding on either of the Parties hereto unless reduced to writing and executed
by an authorized representatives of each of the Parties. Entire Agreement. This
Agreement comprises all the terms, conditions and agreements of the Parties hereto
with respect to the subject matter hereof and supersedes all previous negotiations,
proposals, or agreements of any nature whatsoever. Survivorship. All provisions of
this Agreement that reasonably may be interpreted or construed as surviving
termination shall survive the termination. Counterparts. This Agreement may be
executed in multiple facsimile or original counterparts, each of which shall be
deemed an original and all of which taken together shall constitute one and the same
instrument. Notices. Any notice or other communication under this Agreement given
by any Party to any other Party will be in writing and will be deemed properly given
when sent to the intended recipient by certified letter, receipted commercial courier or
electronically receipted facsimile transmission to the respective addresses or
facsimile number shown on the Order. Any Party may from time to time change such
address or individual by giving the other Party notice of such change in accordance
with this Section. Foreign Country Specific provisions. If the shipment destination
is outside the United States, the Country Specific provisions on Attachment A (if
