Alex G. Spanos
Sports Complex
The Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex is an ambitious project that will change the face and charac-
ter of Sacramento State. It is a centerpiece of Destination 2010, an initiative to transform the campus
into a premier metropolitan university and a destination campus.
Thanks to generous gifts by philanthropist and San Diego Chargers owner Alex G. Spanos and
his wife, Faye, the facility has had more than $2 million in upgrades since 1998.
The stadium also is at the center of an ambitious project that will include a new fieldhouse, recre-
ation center and arena, and stadium renovation — all part of the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Alex G. and Faye Spanos provided the leadership gift of $10 million to support expansion of the
Spanos Sports Complex. There will be additional funding from other private sources and a new fee
that students supported in a 2004 referendum.
The first expansion phase of the complex will be a new fieldhouse, to be named the Broad Athletic
Facility in recognition of a $2 million gift from Eli and Edythe Broad. It will be on the south side of the
stadium and include a 4,565 square-foot weight room as well as locker rooms, offices and a Gallery
of Champions. The Broad Athletic Facility is scheduled to be completed in early 2008.
Also in 2008, Sacramento State will break ground on the Recreation and Wellness Center on the
north side of the stadium. At approximately 150,000 square feet, the facility wil have an indoor
track, fitness center, recreational courts, rock-climbing walls and a health center.
Sacramento State is currently pursuing public-private partnership options for the arena portion
of the complex. It will be built on the east of the stadium and seat 6,000-8,000 for events such as
intercollegiate basketball, commencement and concerts. The stadium renovation will include a more
permanent structure and additional amenities.
The development of the Spanos Sports Complex is part of a broad campus initiative known as
Destination 2010. Its goal is to make Sacramento State a premier metropolitan university and desti-
nation campus for the West through enhanced academic and student programs, improved facilities,
and additional community support.
Additional information can be found at www.SpanosSportsComplex.com.

One significant addition to the Sacramento State campus was the weight room located at the Hornet
Stadium complex. Behind the efforts of former football assistant coach and Sacramento State alum Bob
Visger, who spearheaded the project, members of the Hornet community from throughout the region
donated supplies and services totaling over $300,000 to the project. The facility features the latest in
dumbbell and barbell free weights, strength machines and aerobic equipment.
During the fall of 2006, Sacramento State broke ground on the Broad Athletic Facility. Along with Gary Uribe Scott Salwasser
