  GROWING SENTENCES
Level: Middle and High School
Sentence Seed # 1: The person ate food.
Add one or more adjectives to describe the person
What type of person was it? Replace the word person with an occupation
or title. Do not use proper names. Examples might be paperboy,
     waitress, therapist, custodian, and executive.
Replace the word “ate” with a synonym. (swallowed, inhaled, gobbled,
     etc.)
List three foods and describe each one with adjectives. These items will
be written in a series and should be separated by commas.
Tell where the food was eaten.
     KWHL Grades 3 and Up:

Use the AlphaSmart to do a silent KWHL – File 1 = what
we Know about a topic, File 2 = what we Want to learn,
File 3 = How we could learn it. File 4: what we Learned.
Pass the AlphaSmart around and let kids add info.
Similarly, pass it around anytime you want to gather input
or feedback from students while they do another activity.
Writing Achievement with AlphaSmart

• Compare writing samples of 21 fifth graders using
  traditional pencil/paper and AlphaSmart
• The same writing prompt was given in both instances.
• No writing instruction was given between the two writing
  prompts
• Hypothesis was proved correct: Using AlphaSmart
technologies does increase student writing achievement!
