New recruit gets married then joins Alaska Air National Guard

CAMP DENALI, Alaska—The newest member of the Alaska Air National Guard not only
made the commitment to serve, but also made a commitment to his long-time girlfriend by
marrying her on the same day.

The couple, Jessica Lauren Bryant and James Floyd Amos met in 2008 while living in Florida,
fell in love and moved to Alaska this July to begin a new life together.

"We met in Pensacola in February 2008 and started dating June 24, 2008,” said Bryant.
“Before moving to Alaska, I attended the University of West Florida and received and
Associate of Arts degree in communication media while James attended Pensacola Junior
College and received his electricians degree.”

With a degree in hand, Amos decided that his knowledge would best serve the Alaska Air
National Guard and decided to join.

Amos followed his dreams by talking to 176th Wing recruiter, Staff Sgt. Joshua Jones, with
the intent to join the Alaska Air National Guard. However, Amos didn’t want to enlist and
ship to basic until he and Bryant were married.

Amos proposed to Bryant hoping to marry before he enlisted, so they could join the Guard
family together. Unfortunately, the Anchorage court house couldn’t marry the couple until
November which would delay his enlistment and could have affected his career choice.

“Our recruiting team, going above and beyond as always said, ‘Why not get married here at
Kulis during your enlistment ceremony?’ And the ball started rolling,” recalled Maj. Kay
Spear-Budd, 176th Wing, executive staff officer.

The couple asked Jones to officiate at Amos’ enlistment. Jones deferred to his chain of
command and from there a wedding was set in motion.

On Oct. 6, 176th Wing Chaplain Maj. Matthew Friese, volunteered to perform the wedding
ceremony for the couple in the ops theater on Kulis Air National Guard Base. Jones gave the
bride away as many Alaska National Guardsmen witnessed this unique and joyous
ceremony.
Immediately following the vows and wedding ceremony, Lt. Col. Michael Griesbaum,
commander of the 176th Maintenance Squadron, enlisted Amos with his new bride by his
side into the Alaska Air National Guard family.

“Between the First Sergeants Association and the recruiters, the Alaska Air National Guard
was able to provide this young couple a wedding to remember,” Spear-Budd said.

The next step for the Amos family is basic training, where James will learn basic airman
skills. Upon completion, he will attend training to become a crew chief for the C-17
Globemaster III before returning to Alaska.
