SHORT DESCRIPTION OF POST
This post involves supporting a unique international programme of work, (partnered with Penal Reform International and
Bristol University) the programme aim is to contribute to the eradication of torture in prisons and other places of detention
(including police cells, psychiatric institutions, juvenile centres, homes for the elderly and military detention facilities) in nine
CIS countries. Strengthening, supporting and developing a range of mechanisms and institutions to combat torture,
developing and strengthening civil society capacity to monitor places of detention and closed institutions and to advocate for
holistic and comprehensive programmes of rehabilitation based on existing models of international good practice.
This programme will be located in London and 8 representatives from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan and
Tajikistan will be attending. The post requires the successful applicant to take key notes through-out the programme and to
produce a written report at the end of the project. The applicant must therefore have an excellent grasp of verbal and written
English and Russian. In addition, the intern will be responsible for greeting the Russian-speaking participants and helping
them with orientation for the day at the beginning of each day.
Freedom from Torture / The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, is the only organisation in the UK
dedicated solely to the treatment of torture survivors. With our main treatment centre in London and four National centres
around the UK, the Medical Foundation offers medical consultation, examination and forensic documentation of injuries,
psychological treatment and support, and practical help. The Training and Capacity Building Team provides training to
external organisations in order to improve the quality and availability of services to torture survivors in the UK.
