					     InfraCal TOG/TPH Analyzer,
           Model HATR-T2
           Extraction Procedure

   Collect a measured amount of sample
For samples that will be stored for more
   than a day or for samples with a high
   pH:

Adjust the pH to less than 2 with
   Hydrochloric acid or Sulfuric Acid
   (typically 3-5 drops depending on
   buffers in sample)
      Add Solvent
                10 parts sample to 1 part solvent




For example:
For 150 ml of sample add
15 ml of solvent
       Add Solvent
                 10 parts sample to 1 part solvent




For example:
For 150 ml of sample add
15 ml of perchloroethylene
   Shake for 2 minutes
   Open the cap on the bottle during the
    2 minute shaking to relieve the
    pressure
   Hexane is lighter than water and will
    float on the top of the sample
   Using a syringe or pipette, take 50
    microliters of solvent extract
   And deposit it in the center of the
    sample crystal
   Press the run button
   Oil concentration displayed

          Silica Gel Extraction

The difference between TPH (Total Petroleum
     Hydrocarbon) and TOG (Total Oil and
  Grease) is the polar organics are removed
     from the extract using silica gel. The
  remaining hydrocarbons are the non-polar
       components considered to be TPH
             Silica Gel Extraction

   Put filter paper into funnel
   Add silica
             Silica Gel Extraction

   Put filter paper into funnel
   Add silica
   Put funnel into bottle
   Put solvent extract through
    silica gel
             Silica Gel Extraction

   Put filter paper into funnel
   Add silica
   Put funnel into bottle
   Put solvent extract through
    silica gel
   Using a 50 microliter syringe or pipette
    deposit on the center of the sample
    plate crystal
   Press the run button
   Oil concentration displayed
