I found this site about the benefits of building or buying a pre-fabricated coffee stand. The page went
on to list out the advantages and disadvantages of both ideas. The goal was to buy their pre-
fabricated buildings but they did lay out what would need to be considered in making the decision
such as cost, finding someone to design a stand and making all the decisions about equipment and
what you would need to design for to make the stand run well.

In looking at this one pre-fabricated design I got a general idea of all the elements I needed to take
into consideration if I were to design my own. I had never thought about permitting and regulations or
that my blueprints would not be enough, but a contractor and timeline would be required to get a
stand built. For example, keeping the water source a set distance from electrical outlets was vital to
getting your permit to operate the business. This helped me realize how complicated a blueprint would
be or designing my own and how much I would need to consider in my own design.

This site was created by a consultant, Ed Arvidson who has been in the food business for 20 years and
been a trainer before he went into the coffee business. He designed other restaurant equipment and
plans for Coffee Drive Thrus along with having cofounded a company and created education materials
for the coffee business.

This booklet was my main text resource since it was a guide on how to create a business proposal. It
outlines the process of how to create a business proposal including background research in other local
business in the area, understanding my credit potential and the value of partnering with others, as well
as how to outline for the bank or other potential investors. The how-to guide also shared how to work the
plan and format it for greater appeal.

I used the booklet to lead me through the process of creating my own plan step by step. The booklet
helped me to figure out what areas I needed to research in order to complete my business plan. While
working on my business plan I kept checking back in this booklet for help when I needed it. One of the
most important pieces of information was meeting with a loan officer to secure financial backing and
check my personal credit rating. The information included in this book was tremendous. It helped me
through every single step of writing my business plan. It also had a few examples of blueprint ideas
along with advertisement ideas.

The source was credible because it was produced by a company that helps people start up their own
businesses and was created by a local business group.

The bank loan officer took me through all of the steps anyone applying for a small business loan would
have to complete. She was able to walk me through the paperwork and tell me how my financial
history and work history would come into play. She explained interest rates, small business’ most
common problems and even how effective communication can help when someone is asking to
borrow money.

What I gained most from the interview was how much I would have to work with a bank and what it
would take to get a loan. I never realized that my personal credit history would impact a loan for my
business but it makes sense that if they were to give me money they want to know I can handle it. She
had several small business models and showed me key websites I used in revising my business plan. I
think if I had spoken with her earlier it would have saved me a great deal of searching.

Jane Jones has been a loan officer in her job for fourteen years and the last seven focused on small
business finance at Washington Mutual.

In the Entertainment Book I found a lot of common techniques used by companies to sell their products.
Every coupon in this book had the word “free” in it. Coupons were labeled by color and category and
then each individual business had their own words to add – usually naming their product as well.
Several listed a percentage off, others a set dollar amount. There were restrictions written in fine print.

This resource was a tremendous help. I wasn’t going to use it until my mother suggested that I would be
able to get a few ideas for my coupons and advertisements from it. I was just going to do a $2 dollar off
coupon before looking through this resource, but I changed my mind. I realized after looking through
this book that using the word free and putting a graphic on my coupon would probably attract more
people to my business. I saw three small restaurants one being a Thai Restaurant near my house and
they had a great image of their storefront which caught my eye and I decided to use that as my model
for a coupon. The main thing that this text taught me was the variety of ways someone can advertise
their merchandise.

Entertainment Book has been established for over forty years and sells regional books so I found it a
good comparison guide for the area in which my business was to be located.

This site is the City of Everett’s information page. It gives all of the basic demographic information as
well as commercial information on the area. It includes links to specific businesses and employment
opportunities in the area as well as attractions. It has links for people who want to move here and
businesses that want to set up in Everett.

This site was the only reason I was able to complete my business plan. I was able to find information for
my market analysis, my financial analysis, along with the population and number of people who pass
through Everett on a daily basis. This site has most of the information I needed for both these areas. This
site informed me about competitors and their annual profits. I also learned that every new business
needs a business license in the city of Everett, and also outside the city limits in Everett. This site also
informed me how to acquire a business license. I learned that I needed to contact someone to find out
about building, zoning, and fire regulations before the business opened.

This is a city government provided site and the most recently updated list was May 2006 so I knew the
information was up to date.

John Corney’s website has many ads for different equipment but then is filled with his personal tips on
how to make good Espresso including recipes. He has advice on coffee beans, equipment and even
hosts a coffee blog. He posts trivia about coffee drinking in a very “next-door” neighbor manner.

This site was a life-saver. I hadn’t talked to my mentor about how to make espresso drinks yet, and this
site made it so I’m not so worried about it now. This site taught me how to make a latte, a macchiato, a
cappuccino and iced espresso drinks. I learned what to do to make the actual espresso, and found out
that it’s pretty easy. I also learned how to steam milk and what supplies I need to do so. For example the
temperature of milk for different drinks is important to the taste. One of my learning goals was to learn
how to make basic espresso drinks, and this site taught me how. I used it when I went in to use the
professional equipment on a shift shadowing a barista.
This is a site was created by a man named John Corney who loved coffee, when he came from New
Zealand he found he did not like the coffee shop experience so he made drinks and created recipes
and tips from his home. I found him credible because my customers and my mentor thought the recipes
I followed from his site were the best I made.
