datazone consists of a single NetWorker
                         server, NetWorker clients and
                         storage nodes
client any system with data to be backed
                         up
server contains the client file index and the
                         media database
storage node hosts one or more backup devices
                         (tape or other media)
save set originates from a single client and
may consist of a single file, a
directory, a file system, or a
partition. Each backup run creates a
                         new save set
client file index contains detailed information about
each save set such as the filename
of each file stored, time of back up,
                         size, permissions, ownership, etc.
Info is stored in flat files. Can be
                         rebuilt from scratch.

media database maps the save sets to the volumes
where they are stored, stores the
                         browse and retention policies for
                         each save set, and maintains
                         tracking information for all storage
                         volumes.
Info is stored in flag files. Can be
                         rebuilt from scratch.
browse policy determines how long file entries are
maintained in the client file index

retention policy determines how long save sets are
                         stored on backup media
volume pool a specific collection of volumes to Storage Pool
                         which the NetWorker server writes
data. The server uses pools of
volumes to sort and store data. The
                         configuration settings for each pool
act as filters that tell the server
                         which volumes should receive
                         specific data
save set consolidation Save set consolidation merges a
new level 1 backup with the last Full
backup of a save set to create a
                         new Full backup.
cloning process of creating duplicates of
                         complete volumes or individual
                         save sets.
staging allows save set data to be migration
                         transferred from one storage
                         medium to another.

backup: full Backs up all files, regardless of
whether or not they have changed.

backup: Level 1-9 Backs up files that have changed
                       since the last lowered numbered
                       backup.
backup: Incremental Backs up files that have changed
since the last backup, regardless of
                       level.
backup: Consolidated Backs up all data that has changed
                       since last full backup and
                       subsequently merges these
changes with the last full backup.
savegroup list of clients to be backed up in a
                       scheduled run
multiplexing interleaves data from more than one
save set into each record written to
                       a storage volume.
server parallelism parameter to control the number of
                       concurrent data streams that a
                       server will accept.
client parallelism parameter to control the maximum
                       number of concurrent data streams
                       a client will send.
directives part of a client configuration to
                       define compression, excryption
                       and/or password protection
directed recovery recovery of data to a client other
                       than the originating client.

Legato depends on the change flag
of the file system. Tivoli depends on
the info in the database to identify
changed files
The client file index is backed up
immediately after a client’s save
sets finish.
If the NetWorker server is part of a
regularly scheduled backup group,
a bootstrap is created only when
that backup group runs. If it is not
part of a regular backup group, a
bootstrap is created at the end of
every savegrp.
After a browse policy has expired a
save set can only be restore in its
entirety
Files recreated through index-based
recovery appear “new” to the client-
side save program, the first time
they are encountered during a
backup. Newly recovered files are
backed up on the next scheduled
backup and inherit the browse
policy in effect for the client at the
time of the backup.
Save set recovery lacks the file
handling features that are built in to
index-based recovery, so care must
be taken to recover save sets in
order.

If the filesystem that contains the
indexes gets full, the NetWorker
server is unable to access the
media database and is thus unable
to access and recover data. Unless
you configure the server to control
the size of the online indexes by
using browse and retention policies,
they continue to grow until they
exceed the capacity of the
filesystem.

Renaming a client is a 8 step
