Dr. William's Pink Pills for Pale People is probably the most influential patent medicine
sold in the early twentieth century China. Its advertisements were widely spread in major
printed media, and several eminent figures recollected their memories with the Pink Pills'
advertisement. It is especially impressive that many of the advertisements include a
consumer's testimony of the benefits the Pink Pills brought to their health. Although many
of the contents could hardly be considered as effective evidences for the Pink Pills' merits,
from the medical professional point of view, these words left valuable information about
how laymen in early twentieth-century Chinese people interpreted their body experiences
and pathological reasoning.

In fact, Dr. William's Pink Pills for Pale People were invented in Canada and developed
into an internationally hot medicine since the last decade of the nineteenth century. So it is
an absolute Western medicine. It would be interesting to examine how the pharmaceutical
companies to launch their marketing strategy for Chinese customers to recognize and
accept their product, and how Chinese people responded to this foreign goods in their own
way.
