Home spa: pamper yourself naturally
(Sterling publishing Co., Inc. New York, first paperback edition 2001)
Introduction
Spending a day at a health spa would certainly be at the top of many people’s list of ultimate indulgences.
The idea of wandering around in a thick, fluffy dressing gown and being pampered with a variety of relaxing
beauty treatments sounds like the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of 21st-century life.
But why wait to go a spa? You can enjoy many of the treatments and benefits of a health spa in the comfort
of your own home, every day. All you need to do is set aside a little time for yourself, shut the door on the
rest of the family, then relax and enjoy some serious pampering. Remember, beauty comes from within, so
the more relaxed and carefree you feel, the better you will look.
Setting the scene
One of the most enjoyable elements of going to a health spa is being in comfortable, sumptuous surroundings,
so make sure you spend some time setting the scene at home. Turn the heating up so that you won’t shiver
when you come out of the shower or bathtub. Get a clean dressing gown ready and put it in the airing
cupboard or over a radiator so that it’s warm and cozy. Turn the lights down low in the bathroom-you won’t
want to linger in an aromatherapy bath if you’re being dazzled by the glare of a bright overhead light. Close
the drapes and incest in a couple of rose-tinted bulbs or candles to enhance the atmosphere.
Our sense of smell has a strong effect on the balance of our emotions and can be used to relieve anxiety,
depression, and mental fatigue. To make your bathroom and bedroom smell sweet, use an oil burner or
light-bulb ring vaporizer with a few drops of a relaxing essential oil, such as geranium, jasmine, or lavender.
All you have to do then is lie back and inhale the therapeutic scent as you enjoy spa treatments.
Let’s talk therapies
In the first chapter of the book, we take a detailed look at the various relaxation therapies you can use to help
yourself unwind, both mentally and physically. Many health and beauty problems are exacerbated by anxiety
and negative emotions, so we have put together a series of therapeutic treatments that are sensual, calming,
invigorating, or uplifting, depending on the experience you care seeking.
First is hydrotherapy, which harnesses the power of water. After three treatments, your immune system will
be improved; after 10 treatments, you will experience long-lasting pain relief from aching joints and muscles;
after 20 treatments, you will notice a heightened tolerance to minor ailments and depression, your skin will
be clearer, and your muscle tone and mobility considerably improved.
Or perhaps you’d like to try aromatherapy, which uses health-giving essential oils to elicit various
therapeutic effects. Aromatherapy oils are used in spas the world over to eliminate stress and encourage
health and relaxation. We explain which oils to blend and how to use them in baths, massage, and
inhalations.
Next, we de-mystify thalassotherapy, which is the strange-sounding name given to the use of seaweed wraps
and baths to detoxify and heal. It works because the seaweed contains a similar mix of minerals and water to
our own bodies, so that can easily pass through the skin into the blood-stream, binding themselves to toxins
and withdrawing the toxins from the body. Mud therapy works in a similar way and has a particularly
beneficial effect on the skin.
1
Finally, we look at basic massage methods to relax and rebalance your system. Stressful situations trigger a
whole chain of biochemical and physical reactions, releasing hormones into the bloodstream that can build
up to toxic levels, causing lethargy and depression. We have devised a series of massage routines to help
eliminate toxins while lowering blood pressure, aiding digestion, and relaxing muscles.
Body works
In chapter two we examine treatments for the body-beautiful, from rubs and scrubs that exfoliate the skin to
reveal a soft, new you, to herbal wraps for reducing cellulite and creating instant inch-loss for that big night
out. There are tips for the perfect step-by-step manicure and pedicure, plus relaxing natural bath recipes that
can help to treat everything from insomnia to eczema. All the treatments are designed to be as luxurious as
they are effective, so you can enjoy the experience of healing your body at home, much as would do in a
five-star health resort.
Head lines
Chapter three looks at beauty treatments for the face and hair, from the essential basics of cleansing, toning,
and moisturizing to specific skin problems such as acne, spots, and the effects of aging. In the hair section,
you will discover how to make natural shampoos and conditioners to suit your particular hair type, plus
herbal treatments for hair loss, psoriasis, dandruff, and overprocessed hair.
Throughout this section we have devised easy recipes that you can make yourself using pure and simple
ingredients such as fruits, flowers, herbs, and grains. By using these instead of commercially available
products, you can be sure that what you put on your skin is fresh and pure and free from the chemicals and
additives that bombard our systems every day of the week, giving rise to allergies and sensitivity.
Storage
All of the recipes in this book contain natural ingredients, so it is important to store them appropriately to
maintain their freshness and efficacy. You will need a selection of sealable dark glass or plastic bottles and
jars. Store recipes containing fresh ingredients in a cool, dark place-the refrigerators is ideal. However, many
of the recipes contains natural preservatives, such as tea tree oil, vinegar, and vodka, and these recipes will
stay fresh for a reasonable period of time. Where appropriate, all of the recipes state a maximum storage
period. Now all you have to do is get mixing and enjoy the benefits.
How to use this book
The book is divided into three sections, which together explain all you need to know to turn your home into a
spa. It forms a new way of presenting the theory and practice behind many of the treatments that you will
have heard about or experienced in a professional health spa-and which you can easily recreate for yourself
at home. By following the information in the first chapter, you will learn how the professionals use a number
of key therapies to treat common ailments and beauty problems. Moving on to the second and third sections,
you are shown how to use natural ingredients. You will learn when to exfoliate; different ways to remove
unwanted body hair; how to make and use body wraps to treat cellulite and water retention; methods of
counteracting aging and sun damage; and recipes to make your hair shine with health.
The therapies and treatments have been chosen for their ability to rest the body, restore health, and revive
flagging spirits. In short, this book is a collection of antidotes to the stresses and strains of everyday living.
As you refer to the book, you will find that you gradually build up experience and become more and more
familiar with spa techniques. With practice, you can begin to experiment by combining several treatments to
2
create tailor-made spa sessions that will work to overcome your own particular stress levels and body, face,
and hair problem. Set aside certain times, or days when you can really indulge yourself, but if you are short
of your time, consult the 10-minute pick-up that you will find at the beginning of each section for brilliant
on-the-spot revivers.
All of the therapies described in this section are designed to aid relaxation, and thereby help the body help
itself. When you achieve a sense of inner well-being and your body is in harmony, stress is at a minimum.
The contentment and lack of anxiety that result from relaxation therapies enable you to rest both mentally
and physically, so that you feel revitalized and full of energy. Relaxation therapies are many and varied, but
here we have selected the best tried-and-tested methods, many of which have been used for centuries in
health spas around the world.
Pick-me-ups
The following remedies take just a few minute but have long-lasting effects. Try to repeat the times through
the week as you can, or when you feel particular need.
Aromatherapy Hangover Remedy
If you wake up with a hangover, the most important aid to recovery is water, drink plenty of it and add I drop
rose or peppermint oil to each glass, and 1tsp (5ml) honey. A compress using geranium oil may help a
thumping head, and for a restorative bath, add 2 drops each of lavender and juniper oils and I drop rosemary
oil.
As you refer to the book, you will find that you gradually build up experience and become more and more
familiar with spa techniques. With practice, you can begin to experiment by combining several treatments to
create tailor-made spa sessions that will work to overcome your own particular stress levels and body, face,
and hair problems. Set aside certain times or days when you can really indulge yourself, but if you are short
of time, consult the 10-minute pick-me-ups that you will find at the beginning of each section for brilliant on
–the-spot revivers.
Calming color therapy
Lie down your bed or on the floor, with your eyes closed, and place one hand on your solar plexus(situated in
the center of the chest immediately below the ribcage). The solar plexus is the nerve center of the autonomic
nervous system. Imaging that it is filled with intense, calming blue light, and feel the light passing in and out
of your body as you breathe in and out, rest and restore.
Aromatherapy de-stresser
Certain essential oils have a strong sedative and relaxing effect. To de-stress, place 4 drops chamomile, 2
drops bergamot onto a cotton handkerchief to your nose, then breathe in deeply through your nose and out
through your mouth for a few minutes. The effect will be almost instantaneous.
Hydrotherapy
Water has long been revered for its healing properties, and you can adapt many hydrotherapy treatments for
use in your own home, to help your body and mind unwind and relax.
Hydrotherapy, which simply means water therapy, has been with us since the classical civilizations of ancient
Greece and Rome, and probably long before that. The Greeks believed that water had great healing powers
and was essential for all areas of health and well-being. The Romans were so fond of bathing that they
incorporated this pastime into the very fabric of their society, building great temples and baths near to natural
3
springs.
Today, with our frantic modern life-styles, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of health spas and
hydrotherapy. There is nothing quite like completely immersing your body in warm water for instantly
feeling the cares and tensions of the day melt away. Not all hydrotherapy is quite so pleasurable, however.
At the turn of the 19th century, the Austrian spa at Grafenberg was known for its harsh cold-plunge baths,
cold compresses, and wet sheet rubs. Ever today, many hydrotherapy spas advocate alternating hot and cold
water treatment.
Health benefits
In hydrotherapy, water is used to relieve the muscular tension that accompanies mental stress and causes
acute aches and pains. Changing or alternating the temperature and pressure of the water can increase the
beneficial effect. Hot water boosts circulation to help counter backache and muscle stiffness, while cold
water reduces immune system. Steam can also be used to create a wet heat, which causes the blood vessels to
dilate and increases the rate of blood circulation.
Hydrotherapy for better sleep
This hydrotherapy treatment for insomnia may sound a little strange, but it is surprisingly effective. Take a
pair of cotton socks, run them under cold water, then wring them out. Put the wet socks on, then put a pair of
dry, woolen socks over the top. Get into bed and leave the socks on for at least 30minuted-all night if you fall
asleep fast enough.
Create your own flotation tank
Flotation tanks are a relatively new invention, but you can achieve a similar effect in your own bathroom
using Epsom salts. Epsom salt baths were first used to treat shell-shocked soldier during World War Ⅰ,
when the salts were found to have a calming effect on the nerves. Flotation tanks work by stimulating the
body’s production of natural pain-relieving hormones, known as endorphins. These ease pain, lower blood
pressure, and reduce the level of stress-induced chemicals.
1 Start the session by washing your body, face, and hair thoroughly to remove any dirt and body oil. Make
sure the bathroom door is closed while you shower to help the room warm up.
2 Once the bathroom is warm enough, run a bath, adding 6ib (2.5kg) of Epsom salts to the water. The salts
increase the buoyancy of the water and help to prevent the skin from wrinkling. The ideal temperature for the
bath water is around 82.5-86F (28-30).
3 Switch off the lights and relax in the bath for around 15 minutes. It is a good idea to use earplugs to stop
any water from entering your ears and to prevent audible, distractions. The aim is to remove all sensory input,
so that your sole sensation is one of floating in water. In the silence of weightlessness envelop your body.
Tensions and stresses will gradually float away, leaving you feeling both mentally and physically restored.
Soothe away aches and pains
Stand under a warm shower until you feel thoroughly relaxed, then work your body with slow, steady
movements, as outlined below. Do not force anything beyond what is totally comfortable. If there is not
sufficient space to swing your arms and legs in the shower, wait until the bathroom is hot and steamy, then
get out of the shower to perform the movements. When you have finished, get back into the shower for a
final hot burst.
For the shoulders
4
Repeat each of these movements 10 times. Swing your arms alternately backward and forward, so that the
right arm is going forward when the left arm is going backward. Swing your arms out from the sides and
back into the body again. Next, swing your arms in a circular motion, moving one arm at a time. Shrug your
shoulders up and down. Finally, move your shoulders in a circular motion, first backward, then forward.
For the back
Tuck your chin in slightly and imagine you have a length of string pulling your head up into the clouds; feel
your head floating upward. Hold that feeling, then tuck your bottom in and feel your spine lengthening down
toward your heels. Gradually start to bend your knees. As you do so, feel your spine lengthening even more.
Continue to bend your knees until you reach the lowest point you can manage with comfort. Hold that
position for 15 seconds. Stand up straight, rest, and repeat.
For hips and legs
Stand up straight and hold onto the side of the shower to keep your balance, then repeat each of these
movements 10times. Swing your right leg backward and forward, then draw circular movements with your
foot, first outward and then inward. Repeat with your left leg.
Caution
Epsom salts are potent and must be used with care. Do not stay in the bath for longer than 20 minutes. Be
especially cautious if you have diabetes, hypertension, or a heart condition. If in doubt, seek medical advice
first.
Create your own steam room
You can easily enjoy the benefits of a steam room at home, without having to visit a spa. Steam rooms work
in a similar way to saunas, the differences being that a sauna delivers a dry heat and a steam room a humid
heat. The hot, humid environment causes the pores to open and the body to perspire profusely. As you sweat,
toxins are flushed out of your system. At the same time, the heat causes surface blood vessels in the skin to
dilate, creating a hot flash, which brings oxygen to the skin to revive it. Steam rooms are also an excellent
way to relieve sinus conditions, since the humidity of the steam aids decongestion.
1. close all of the doors and windows in the bathroom and set the shower at the highest temperature. Run
the shower for about 10 minutes, until the room begins to fill with steam. When the bathroom is full of
steam, turn off the water and sit in the room for a further 10 minutes.
2、to get the most benefit from the steam, fill a muslin, cheesecloth, or thin cotton bag with herbs and hang it
under the shower stream. Use camomile to reduce feelings of restlessness and anxiety; linden flowers to
encourage mental relaxation and calm; and elderflowers to ease congestion in your chest and sinuses.
3、Finish your steam session with a warm shower, and finally, with a quick blast of cold water. Towel
yourself dry and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Thalassotherapy
Bring the healing powers of the sea into your bathroom with seaweeds, algaes, and sea minerals. They will
soothe away stress and recharge your body.
Thalassotherapy originates from the Greek word "thalasso," meaning the sea, so thalassotherapy literally means
5
sea treatments. In France and some other European countries, thalassotherapy is so revered that treatments are
available in coastal resorts on their national health service or standard health insurance.
KELP TABLETS
A growing number of sea plants, including blue-green algae and the common kelp that is found on beaches, are
available in tablet form and as seaweed drinks. They are high in nutrients, minerals, and proteins and help to
boost energy levels.
CHLORELLA TABLETS
Chlorella is a blue-green algae that is commonly available as a nutritional supplement. It is rich in Iron and the
whole spectrum of nutrients needed for human health. Just 1/3oz (10g) of chlorella contains the full
recommended dally allowance of Iron, and in a form that is much more easily absorbed than iron from meat or
vegetable sources, and even other supplements.
Seaweed is thought to have a natural affinity with the human body, because they are both composed of a similar
mix of minerals, vitamins, trace elements, and water. This similar composition means that the minerals from the
seaweed can easily pass through the skin into the bloodstream and out again, binding themselves to toxins and
withdrawing the toxins from the body In the process.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Marine treatments help to stimulate circulation, soothe muscular aches and pains, reduce cholesterol, and lower
blood pressure. When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, seaweed's detoxifying and
circulation-boosting properties also make it ideal for toning the body. In addition, seaweed destroys bacteria, so
it is excellent for the skin. It is particularly effective for spots, acne, blemishes, and dry-skin conditions.
MARINE AND ROCK SALTS
Sea salts are minerals that have been collected from the sea, cleaned, and dried. You can add them to your bath
water or use them while showering to recreate the therapeutic qualities of natural sea water. The most common
ingredients of mineral salts are bicarbonates, sulfates, nitrates, chlorides, and calcium. Usually taken from the
Dead Sea in Israel, mineral salts help to ease stress and provide relief from health complaints such as arthritis and
psoriasis. Rock salts are useful for relieving muscular aches and pains.
SEAWEED
Seaweed is bursting with vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial elements, including large amounts of iodine- it
can be used to ease aches and pains, detoxify the body, soothe the skin, boost the circulation and metabolism, and
lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Seaweed is also a potent diuretic, so it can even cause temporary weight
loss. If you live by the sea, you can collect your own seaweed, steam-clean it, then add it to your bath water to
bring the sea into your own home. Alternatively, buy fresh or dried seaweed from health food stores and Japanese
delicatessens. You can also buy seaweed by mail order.
WHICH TYPE OF SEAWEED?
Seaweed is the generic term for over 20,000 species of sea plants and algae (single-celled organisms) that live in
the world's oceans and seas. The table below shows the varieties most commonly used in thalassotherapy spa
6
treatments.
Seaweed is available in many forms. You can buy fresh, dried, or powered seaweed, or even collect your own if
you live by the sea.
Soothing seaweed wrap
You can utilize the therapeutic power of sea minerals at home by making your own treatment wrap. Rather than
buying fresh seaweed, it is easier to use dried seaweed powder. Drink several glasses of water after the treatment
to prevent dehydration, because seaweed has a strong diuretic effect.
INGREDIENTS
8oz_ (225g) concentrated, dried, micronized seaweed powder 2 drops lavender essential oil 1 drop rosemary
essential oil 3tbsp (45ml) almond oil
PREPARATION
Mix the dried seaweed powder with a little warm water to make a paste. Add the essential oils to the almond oil,
then stir this mixture into the seaweed paste.
APPLICATION
Take a warm shower and exfoliate your skin using a loofah or body scrubber to aid absorption of the seaweed
minerals. Apply the seaweed paste over your whole body, starting from your feet. Ask someone to apply it to your
back and other areas you cannot reach. Cover yourself in plastic wrap and lie in a warm place for 20-30 minutes.
Remove the plastic wrap and rinse off the seaweed paste with a warm shower.
Mud therapy
Use the rich minerals of mud and clay found deep within the earth and at the bottom of the sea to ease aches and
pains, relax your body and mind, and rejuvenate your skin in the comfort of your own home.
Mud therapy, or fangotherapy as it is also known, is another spa treatment that has been used through the centuries
and continues to be a key therapy in many of the world's health spas.
In fangotherapy, warm mud is applied all over the body (the chest and left arm are sometimes omitted because of
the high temperatures that the body reaches during the course of the treatment, but such temperatures will not be
achieved when employing products designed for home use). The body is then wrapped in foil and covered with
towels and blankets. Over the next 30 minutes, the mud begins to dry, the skin starts to tighten and tingle, and the
body's temperature rises to around 104-118'F (40-48'C), causing profuse sweating. Mud treatments are also
suitable for the face.
WHAT SORT OF MUD?
We're not talking any old mud here; there are two main types of curative mud.
DEAD SEA MUD
In the Dead Sea, black mineral mud is dredged from the seabed. It is made up of non-soluble clays, plus such high
concentrations of magnesium, potassium, and calcium that only a few algae and bacteria can survive the
conditions - hence the term "dead" sea.
EARTH MUD
The other type of mud comes from deep down in the earth, and is often of volcanic origin. It is laden with
beneficial minerals, including magnesium, bromine, and iodine.
Mud, glorious mud
Mud has been prized for centuries by those seeking pain relief and skin health, and is revered in health spas
7
throughout the world. In Germany, patients are even offered two-week spa treatments at the Dead Sea on their
national health service, while in Tuscany 60 percent of visitors having mud treatment at the Montecatini spa are
there by national health referral.
Both of these types of mud are available In health stores and beauty salons for use at home. Most ready-prepared
mud packs contain kaolin or Fuller's earth day, which are well-known for their deep-cleansing qualities and which
also stimulate blood circulation and lymph flow,
The color of mud varies, depending on its place of origin, and different colors are suitable for different types of
skin, Choose white clay for oily skin, brown clay or mud for dry skin, and green clay or Dead Sea mud for
problem skins that are prone to blemishes.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Mud treatments are undoubtedly good for you, but we are still not sure exactly how they work. Stimulation of
bone cells is thought to help those with osteoporosis;
Increased production of anti-inflammatory hormones alleviates arthritis; reduced water retention around areas of
tissue damage speeds recovery after surgery or major injury- Mud therapy has even been shown to stimulate
cartilage regrowth. According to researchers, this is why 88 percent of people with degenerative arthritis feel better
after regular mud baths.
Other studies conclude that it is the heat generated that aids recovery. The mud is said to heat up the body in a spe-
cial way. Increasing blood circulation and releasing endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. This eases muscle
and joint stiffness, and reduces the aches and pains associated with arthritis, rheumatism, and other joint problems.
The mud pack is probably (he oldest and most effective face mask. It cleanses, soothes, and tones the skin,
making you feel wonderfully refreshed.
THE WAY TO BETTER SKIN
Mud packs are probably the oldest known facial treatment, and mud is renowned for its ability to improve the
quality of the skin. Research has shown that warm mineral mud stimulates the underlying skin cells to produce
new, healthy tissue. Some types of mud also contain natural antibiotics, such as sulfur, which detoxify, exfoliate,
and rejuvenate the skin. A full body wrap is said to eliminate impurities and toxins, and so reduce the appearance
of cellulite.
Rejuvenating mud pack
The next best thing to wallowing in the Dead Sea or having fangotherapy at a health spa is to try one of the many
mud products that are available for purchase at home. This mud pack can be used both on the body and the face.
INGREDIENTS
10fl oz. (300ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice
8oz (225g) Fuller's earth powder
1tbsp (15ml) almond oil
1tsp (5ml) clear honey
2 drops sandalwood essential oil
PREPARATION
Gradually stir the lemon juice into the Fuller's earth powder to form a thick paste. Add the almond oil, honey, and
8
essential oil to the mud paste, then stir in a little hot water to warm and liquefy the mixture. Mix thoroughly using
a wooden spoon.
Large sheets of foil designed for use with mud packs are available from specialist outlets, but you can achieve a
comparable result with kitchen foil, though it is a little more tricky and takes longer to do.
APPLICATION
1 Start by having a warm shower and exfoliating your body using a loofah or body brush. Spread the mud pack all
over your body, starting with your feet and working your way up. Alternatively, concentrate on areas that need
particular attention, such as the thighs. Don't forget the back and face, particularly if you have problem skin.
2 Lie down in a warm room and cover the mud-coated areas of your body with foil. The foil helps to retain the
heat generated by the mud. Leave on for 15 minutes, then remove the foil.
3 Get into a warm bath infused with a few drops of almond oil. Close your eyes and relax in the bathtub for at
least 30 minutes. During this time the body continues to react to the heat of the mud treatment and the metabolism
increases. More oxygen reaches the cells, and toxins and other impurities are flushed out of the body.
4 After your bath, pat yourself dry with a warm towel; try not to rub the skin too briskly. Finally, drink several
glasses of water to rehydrate your body with the fluid lost in perspiration.
Aromatherapy
Aromatic essential oils can be used to de-stress, relax, invigorate, detoxify, and pamper your skin and psyche.
No home spa is complete without them.
The word aromatherapy simply means smell therapy, and as the name suggests, aromatherapy is the use of healing
aromas from flowers, trees, herbs, and other plants. Most of the plants are well-known and often powerful
medicinal herbs, The volatile essential oil is captured through a process of extraction or distillation, believed to
have been discovered in the 10th century by the Arab physician known in the West as Avicenna. However,
essential oils have long been highly prized for their medicinal and therapeutic value, and the use of aromatherapy
can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times.
For me past few centuries, the world's essential oil industry has been centered in Grasse, in southern France. It
was a French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, who first coined the term aromatherapy, after carrying out
important healing work with wounded soldiers during World War 1.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Research has shown that the sense of smell is strongly linked to the emotions. The area of the brain associated
with smell is the same as that used in memory, which is why some scents are so evocative. The olfactory nerve
cells terminate in the cilia, tiny hairs in the nasal cavity. When these are stimulated by an aroma, they transmit a
direct impulse to the limbic part of the brain, where the memory and emotions are governed. This in turn connects
to the, hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, which control the hormonal systems. Certain oils therefore have an
amazing effect on the balance of our emotions and can be used to relieve anxiety, depression, and mental fatigue.
Diluted oils can also be applied directly to the skin. They are absorbed via the pores into the bloodstream or
lymphatic system and then circulated around the body in much the same way as medicinal herbs or drugs. The
oils help to stabilize the body's systems: they are believed to lower blood pressure, stimulate circulation, and
promote detoxification and healthy cell renewal.
GETTING STARTED
The extraction of oils is complex and expensive to perform, and huge amounts of plant stock are required to distil
9
minute quantities of oil, so it is not worth trying to extract essential oils at home. Essential oils are, however,
widely available from health food stores and pharmacists, and also from mail order companies.
It is important to note that many oils are highly potent and must only be in the dilutions Stated in the directions on
the bottle. In addition, there are a number of oils that should not be used under certain circumstances (see warning
panel to the right). This is particularly important if you are pregnant or are using the Oils on babies or children.
Also bear in mind that aromatherapy has its limitations; you should consult a qualified practitioner if you think
there may be cause for concern or if you have an underlying condition that requires professional medical
attention.
Warning There are a number of oils that need to be used with extreme care in certain circumstances .
• Not to be used except by used professional aromatherapists: aniseed, bay, camphor, hyssop, lemon grass,
pennyroyal, sage, savory, tarragon, thuja, thyme, and wintergreen
• Not to be used on the skin: cinnamon, cloves, and rue
• Not to be used during pregnancy: angelica, basil, cinnamon bark, clary sage, hyssop, juniper berry, lovage,
myrrh, origanum, pennyroyal, rosemary, sage, savory, sweet fennel, sweet marjoram, and thyme
• Use only the following diluted oils on children: camomile, clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, juniper berry,
lavender, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sage, sandalwood, sweet marjoram, and tea tree • Not to be used before
going out in the sun: citrus oils - if applied directly to the skin, they can cause a phototoxic reaction
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
Aromatherapy oils work by absorption through the skin and by inhalation through the olfactory system, and there
are a number of different methods you can use to inhale the oils and to apply them to your skin. Pressure of time
and individual circumstances will dictate the method that best suits your needs.
MASSAGE
This is probably the best-known and most enjoyable method of using aromatherapy oils. The skin contact alone is
beneficial, and the oils are able to penetrate the skin very efficiently. Essential oils should always be blended with
a carrier oil, such as almond oil or grapeseed oil, before being applied to the shin. A whole spectrum of different
scents can be used to treat various conditions. (See the massage section on pages 40-47 for application methods.)
BATHS
Aromatherapy baths are particularly useful for treating whole body ailments, such as rheumatism of arthritis,
where painful inflammation can make massage inappropriate. Taking an aromatherapy bath before you go to bed
can also be a great way to cure insomnia and get a good night's steep - lavender oil is particularly effective. Add
5-10 drops of oil to your bath water after you have filled the tub. Do not run the water too hot, because the
essential oils will evaporate and be lost. Swish the water around to mix the oil thoroughly before you get into the
bathtub.
Steam inhalation
This is an excellent way to treat throat, chest, and sinus problems. Pour some boiling water into a bowl and add
10drops of essential oil. Eucalyptus oil, in particular, is an excellent decongestant and a powerful natural
antiseptic. Cover your head with a thick towel and breathe in deeply. Continue for about 10 minutes.
Caution Do not use this method if you have asthma.
Vaporization
Aromatherapy oil burners are readily available. They are usually heated from a small candle, which causes the oil
10
to evaporate into the room, where it is then inhaled. Light-bulb rings are also available. Made from terracotta,
china, or metal, these rings are designed to sit on the light bulb, and as they get hot, the oil evaporates. Both these
devices can be used simp0ly to add a pleasant smell to the room or to vaporize an oil with particular healing
qualities. Vaporization is very useful for fumigating a sick room; if you require antibacterial properties, use a
blend of rosemary and eucalyptus oils.
Compresses
Compresses are used for two main purposes: to reduce inflammation and to treat headaches. Add drops of the
appropriate essential oil to a cup of water and mix well. Soak a clean piece of cotton fabric, such as a
handkerchief, in the oil-water mixture. Squeeze it out and place it over the affected area. Use warm water to treat
muscular aches and pains; use ice-cold water for skeletal pain and to ease a headache. When the compress has
cooled down or warmed up, soak it once again and reapply. Continue to apply fresh compresses for up to an hour.
On pillows and tissues
Inhaling oils from pillows and tissues is the simplest way to sue aromatherapy oils and a great pick-me-up if you
are too busy for a more lengthy treatment. A few drops of peppermint oil on a tissue will relieve a headache;
jasmine and clary sage oils can boost flagging morale; at night, a drop of lavender or rose oil on the pillow will
work wonders for insomnia.
Honey water
An aromatherapist may occasionally recommend that essential oils be taken internally-sandalwood or peppermint
oil to ease nausea, heartburn, and indigestion, for example. In such instances, adding the oil to honey water will
make it more palatable. Honey water is also a good base for gargles and mouthwashes. Put 1tsp (5ml) honey in a
cup of hot water and stir until dissolved, then add a single drop of the appropriate oil.
Caution: only take essential oils internally on the advice of a qualified practitioner, and never exceed the
recommended dosage.
Essential oils for relaxation
It has long been known that essential oils can affect our emotions and have mood-altering properties. Certain oils
contain a group of chemicals known as a potent de-stresser in health saps. Fortunately, you can easily reproduce
the effects in your own home, whether you add the oils to your bath water, inhale them, or massage them into your
skin. The table opposite lists the characteristic aromas and therapeutic effects of some of the most potent essential
oils for relaxation. You can use the oils singly or in combination. Choose oils whose scents most appeal to you –
sometimes the associations of a particular smell can evoke a sense of peace and security. Try experimenting with
different combinations of oils until you find the blend that most relaxes you. If you cannot sleep, for example, try
massaging a blend of neroli, lavender, and chamomile essential oils combined with a sweet almond carrier oil into
your temples, neck, and shoulders.
Essential oils for stimulation
A few drops of the right essential oil can be stimulating and give a real boost to flagging energy levels. Oils that
are high in a group of chemicals known as “phenols,” such as peppermint, are particularly effective stimulants.
Keep a few of these oils in the bathroom to add to your bath water whenever you feel in need of recharging. The
chart below shows those oils with invigorating characteristics.
Recipes for common ailments
It is good idea to become familiar with a few blends of essential oils that you can rely on for specific occasions.
11
Tension
Use this mixture of oils in a warm bath to help relax tense muscles and calm your mind: 3drops neroli, 5drops
lavender, an 2drops lemon.
Anxiety
Emotional tension can soon lead to headaches and a stiff neck. You may also suffer other symptoms, including
palpitations, diarrhea, and insomnia. A full body massage with calming and uplifting oils can help to restore your
emotional balance. Try a blend of 5drops lavender, 3 drops geranium, and 5 drops rose mixed with a carrier oil.
Insomnia
Not being able to sleep is usually an indication of stress. Massage your face, neck, and shoulders with 5 drops
neroli, 5 drops lavender, and 3 drops rose mixed in a carrier oil; or add the essential oil mixture to your bath water
and enjoy a long soak before sleeping.
Headache and Migraine
If you have a mild headache, rub pure lavender oil onto your temples and the back of your neck. Inhaling
peppermint oil can sometimes bring relief. If the headache does not respond, however, try a neck and shoulder
massage or a warm bath with 3 drops peppermint and 3 drops sweet marjoram added.
Depression
To balance your emotions and help you feel able to cope, try a full body massage using 3 drops jasmine, 3 drops
ylang ylang, and 2 drops clary sage mixed with carrier oil. You may also find it helpful to sprinkle some of the
essential oil mixture onto a tissue to help get you through the day.
Low sex drive
This can often be due to anxiety or depression. The best mixture is 5 drops rose, 3 drops ylang ylang, and 2 drops
jasmine. Vaporize the mixture in the bedroom, and blend it with a carrier oil for you and your partner to give each
other a sensual massage.
Colds and flu
Take a steam inhalation containing 3 drops eucalyptus, 3 drops tea tree, and 2 drops peppermint oil three times a
day.
Massage
Every day spent at a spa starts with a massage, but it is easy to master the basic massage strokes for use in your
own home to relieve tension, ease stress, relax your muscles, and calm your mind.
Being touched in a caring way is a nurturing, healing experience. Massage itself is an extension of the natural
response to pain. Think of how you tell a child that you will “rub it better,” or how you instinctively knead a sore
muscle or rub an aching back. The word massage actually comes from the Greek word “massein,” meaning to
knead.
The best-known Western method of massage is Swedish massage, introduced by Peter Henry Ling(1776-1838),
who developed the long, sweeping strokes that are still used today. Eastern techniques, such as Japanese shiatsu,
Chinese acupressure, and Thai massage, are based on the application of pressure to key points along the body’s
“meridians.” These meridians are channels through which energy is transported around the body, and by
stimulating key points along them, the energy can flow freely and restore good health.

Health benefits
Massage is not just a treat or whimsy; it really does help you to feel better. Even the most basic massage, done
without any training or instruction, helps to stimulate the circulation and dilate the blood vessels. You can see this
happening when the area that you massage reddens. The improved blood flow helps to reoxy-genate the tissues,
bringing nutrients to the site and taking away toxins. It also boosts the lymphatic system and can reduce fluid
retention. The heat produced by the massage and the extra blood flow helps to relax muscular tension.
Regular deep-tissue massage can be extremely helpful if you are under stress, particularly if you combine it with
the therapeutic properties of sedative aromatherapy oils, which are readily absorbed into the skin during massage.
Basic strokes
There are a number of basic strokes in Swedish massage. Although these are given strange-sounding names, they
are actually just different types of touch and pressure. Always use a massage oil so that you do not drag the skin;
almond and grape-seed oils are suitable
Effleurage
The term is derived from the French word “Effleurer,” meaning “to touch lightly.” Effleurage is a slow, rhythmic
stroking, and should be used to begin and end each massage session. Use the flat of the hand in long, gentle
strokes, emphasizing the pressure when stroking in the direction of the heart. Keep the fingers close together, with
the fingertips slightly raised so that they do not dig into the skin as you stroke.
Kneading
Kneading is an excellent stroke for the fatty areas of the body, such as the thighs and buttocks. Keeping the fingers
straight, lift the tissue away from the bone in one hand, then pass it over to the other hand, before grasping another
handful, as if you were kneading bread. Emphasize the pressure as you pass the tissue from one hand to the other.
Petrissage
Petrissage comes from the French word “petrir,” meaning “to knead.” It is used where muscle is knotted or tense
and the bone is close to the surface. Use the fingers or thumbs to squeeze the soft tissue against the bone beneath
in small, circular motions, trapping the skin rather than sliding over it.
Self-massage : the best place to carry out self-massage is in the bathtub, when your body is warm and the muscles
more pliant and receptive. You can massage your face, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and feet yourself, using a
fragrant soap or bath oil for lubrication. Always remember to massage toward your heart. Alternatively, use a j4et
of warm water from a shower hose to massage your body. Direct the water in small, circular movements to those
areas that you wish to treat.
Percussion
Percussion is a stimulating massage technique that should be performed quickly. It can be used all over the body,
but is particularly good for fatty areas such as the hips and thighs. There are several percussive strokes: hacking
(pictured above), using the little finger edges of each hand in a smooth, chopping motion; cupping, using curved
palms to tap the skin, which creates a mini-vacuum and produces a sound like trotting hooves; and tapotement, a
13
gentle tapping with the fingertips that is useful for the sensitive skin of the face.
Friction
This stroke is an excellent way to increase blood flow to a particular area. Rub the palms speedily over the body,
producing heat through friction. For a more pronounced effect, wear a sisal mitt.
DIY FACIAL MASSAGE
You can easily give yourself a facial massage, using either aromatherapy oils or your favorite beauty lotion. It is a
great way to tone flagging facial muscles, and leaves the skin feeling refreshed and tingling. Most facial massage
movements are upward, to ward the forehead, and outward, toward the side3s of the face. They should never drag
the skin downward. Take extra care around the eyes, where the skin is thin. Before you start, apply a generous
layer of face lotion or massage oil. Repeat each step 10 times.
1. Gently stroke the face with both hands, using the tips of your fingers. Stroke upward from the corners of the
mouth, over the cheeks, to the tops of the ears. The action is rather like massaging a smile into place.
2. Move to the forehead and smooth away worry lines, taking the fingertips of both hands from between the eyes
and up and out over the eyebrows.
3. Gently pinch the eyebrows between your thumb and forefingers. Start at the inner ends and move along the
arch of the brow toward the temples.
4. Lightly pat your face all over by tapping your fingertips gently over the skin. Start at the chin and work up the
cheeks to the temples. Avoid the eye area.
DIY ANTI-CELLULITE MASSAGE
Cellulite is the dimpled, orange-peel flesh that occurs when the collagen fibers, which form around fat cells, trap
toxins and fluid under the skin. Cellulite can be helped by massage, which boosts the circulation of the lymphatic
system and the blood. Massage also helps to keep the muscle tissues toned. Work the muscle of the thighs one at a
time.
1. Sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you, and slightly bend the knee of the leg you are going to
massage. Using a kneading action (see page 42), work the muscle of your thigh. Begin just above the knee
and work your way gradually up to the hip. Do not pinch the skin or you could bruise it. Work the muscle of
the thighs one at a time.
2. Next, use percussive strokes (see page 43). Start by chopping the outer thighs with the little finger edges of
your hands using hacking strokes, then cup your palms and apply cupping strokes over the same area.
BACK MASAGE
A full back massage is a wonderful form of relaxation. Unfortunately, it is not possible to perform your own back
massage; you will have to ask a friend or partner to do it for you. A full back massage will take about 60 minutes,
but you can select those areas most in need of attention if time is short.
1 Start with effleurage strokes (see page 42). Begin at the small of the back and stroke toward the neck. Use light
pressure at the beginning of each stroke and increase the pressure as you move toward the head. Repeat 10
minutes.
14
2 Now use criss - cross effleurage. Place both hands very gently on the lower back, one on each side of the spine,
and slide them across backward and forward in opposite direction, keeping the thumbs close together. Continue
this action and work your way gradually up the back to the shoulders and back dawn again.
3 Now concentrate on the muscle groups along each side of the back using petrissage strokes (see page 42). Press
your fingers and thumbs in small circular movements so that you are squeezing the soft tissues against the bones
beneath. Do not drag your fingers across the skin and avoid nipping the skin. Work your way up and down each
side of the back in turn.
4 Place your thumbs on either side of the base of the spine and work up the length of the spine using petrissage
strokes with the thumbs only. Take care not to apply too much pressure. With practice, you will learn how to
detect areas of tension and the correct amount of pressure to use to loosen the muscles.
5 Soothe the areas you have just worked on with rhythmic circling strokes. Place one hand on top of the other and
use your body weight to press down onto you palms; be careful not to press too strongly. When you have finished,
use effleurage strokes up the length of the back, with one hand placed on either side of the spine and moving from
the buttocks toward the head. When the hands reach the shoulders, move them to each side of the body and return
your hands very gently back to the lower back, always maintaining contact with the skin.
6 Finally, place your hands at the top of the back once again and gently stroke down to the base of the spine using
light, feathering strokes. Repeat using alternate hands. Always keep one hand in contact with the skin; as one hand
is lifted off the lower back, the other should start the next stroke at the base of the neck. Repeat for several
minutes.
Aromatherapy massage
To make the massage as effective as possible, use the following mixture of essential oil: 10 drops bergamot, 5
drops chamomile, 5 drops lavender, and 5drops geranium mixed together with 2 tsp (10ml) almond carrier oil.
When you are being massaged, relax using this visualization technique. Close your eyes and imagine a beautiful
scene, with bright blue sky, rolling clouds, flowers blooming, and birds singing. Try to lose yourself in this idyllic
setting.
Few of us have the time of money to drop everything and go away to a spa, so here’s a top-to toe revitalizing body
program that you can do in your own bathroom. First things first, though: take the phone off the hook, switch off
the television, and tell the family you need to be alone-some well-earned privacy is part of the rejuvenation
process.
Then it’s a question of choosing your treatments. You won’t be able to do everything in a single evening, so spend
some time working out which parts of your body most need attention and draw up a list of priorities. What you
don’t have time for today, you can look forward to in future sessions.
Pick –me-ups
If there are times when your body is just aching for a little pampering but you don’t have much time to spare, try
one of these 10-minutes remedies for instant rejuvenation.
Natural body softeners
Cider vinegar is made from fermented apple juice and is a rich source of potassium, sodium, iron, phosphorus,
and magnesium. Add a cupful to your bath water to soften skin and help restore its natural acid balance.
Use this recipe twice a day on dry elbows and ankles-you will notice a difference within a week. Put 3tbsp (45ml)
olive oil, the juice of 1 lemon, and 1tbsp (15ml) honey in a sterilized jar and shake well. Massage into the dry
15
areas for two minutes, rinse off, pat dry, and moisturize.
Hand treats
Before gardening, smooth on this hand lotion and leave to work under your gardening gloves. Mix 2tsp (10ml)
liquid honey, plus 1 drop geranium essential oil.
For a soothing hand bath, add 1 drop peppermint oil and 4 drops lavender oil to a bowl of warm water then
immerse your hands for five minutes and relax.
To combat cracked skin, dab Friar’s Balsam onto the cracks to seal the skin, then moisturize twice daily.
To remove dead skin cells from your hands and reveal new, soft skin, blend some granulated sugar with a little
vegetable oil and rub in well. Rinse with cold water to improve the circulation and speed up skin renewal.
Let’s talk feet
After a hard day on your feet, lie in the floor and rest your aching feet against an adjacent wall, so that they are
higher than your head. Then soak them for 10 minutes in a bowl of warm water with 5 drops lavender oil.
To treat swollen ankles, make up a solution of 2tbsp (30ml)Epsom salts in 1% pints (1 liter) warm water. Immerse
your feet for 10 minutes and pat dry.
After-sun soothers
To soothe mild sunburn, gently spread one of the following over the affected area: mashed cucumber; plain yogurt;
grated raw potato; cotton balls soaked in milk; or 1 egg white beaten with 2 tsp (10ml) with hazel and 2 tsp (10ml)
honey. Leave for 10 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Take care not to rub the skin when drying it. Gently apply camomile lotion to the burnt area for lasting relief.
To lighten freckled skin, apply crushed grapes for 15 minutes, then wash off with lukewarm water. Alternatively,
make a herbal infusion of camomile, elder-flowers, and parsley. Leave the herbs to brew in some hot water, then
add the juice of a lemon. Strain the liquid and store it in a dark glass bottle. Apply twice a day to the freckled area
until it lightens by the required amount.
Rubs and scrubs
Exfoliation-the process of using a gentle abrasive agent way to a cleaner, softer, smoother body. It is also the
perfect way to prepare your body for most other spa treatments and relaxation therapies. Exfoliation works by
removing the dead cells on the surface of the skin. This unblocks the pores, which are then able to absorb creams
and oils much more efficiently. Exfoliation is particularly good for cellulite, by boosting the circulation, and for
removing the hard skin that builds up on the feet, knees, and elbows.
There is a vast array of equipment for scrubbing, rubbing, and exfoliating various parts of the body. Don’t be
overwhelmed by the selection; it is simply that certain tools are better on particular parts of the body. When
deciding what to buy, look first at those made from natural fibers, which tend to be gentler on the skin than
artificial materials. It is important to keep exfoliating equipment clean and dry when not in use, because bacteria
can grow among the damp fibers. Nylon scrubs have the advantage of being machine-washable.
Pure bristle brush
This is an essential item for the home spa. Used on dry skin every day, a pure bristle brush helps to detoxify the
skin and combat cellulite. You can use it with a mild soap to exfoliate the skin-additional abrasive scrubs and
creams are unnecessary. Long-handled brushes are useful for hard-to-reach areas, such as the back, while smaller
16
body brushes are best for legs and arms. When choosing a brush, rub the palm of your hand against the bristles to
check that they are not to stiff and scratchy.
Loofah
This natural exfoliant is made from dried dishcloth gourd (Luffa), a soft, fibrous plant. Long loofahs, which are
perfect for reaching your back, are made from whole plants, but you can also buy loofahs cut into sections for use
on smaller areas of the body, such as the upper arms, shoulders, and chest. When dry, loofahs are hard and
scratchy, but once you wet them, they become quite soft. Use them with a glycerin body soap or shower gel to
slough away dead skin on a weekly basis.
Sponges
There are many different types of sponge available, both synthetic and natural. They are particularly useful for
sensitive skin or for more delicate areas of the body. Natural sea sponges are quite hard when dry, but soft and
gentle when wet.
Sisal and nylon scrubs
Sisal is another fibrous plant that can be used for exfoliation. Woven to form a mitt or brush, sisal is a handy way
to keep the skin smooth. Sisal scrubs can be used dry for maximum exfoliation or wet for a more gentle effect.
Scrubs and mitts made from man-made materials are also available.
Pumice
Pumice stones are small pieces of volcanic rock that are porous and quite rough to the touch. Different sizes and
shapes of pumice are available and they are generally used on the soles of the feet for abrading areas of hard skin.
Soak your feet in warm water for about 15 minutes to soften the hardened skin before rubbing them with a pumice
stone. Use smooth, continuous strokes.
Grainy gels and creams
Most beauty companies now offer readymade exfoliating gels and creams. There are usually cleansers containing
tiny natural grains or man-made spheres, so that they wash and exfoliate the skin at the same time. They are
formulated for different skin types, so make sure that you buy the one appropriate for you. Gels and creams for
problem or oily skins are usually oil-free; those for dry or mature skins have a rich creamy formula.
Some of the products contain ground-up apricot kernels, which can be very effective, but only use them on rough
skin areas, never on the face. If you have sensitive skin, look for products containing man-made spheres that have
no sharp edges, or better still, make your own recipe.
Deep-cleansing scrub
This scrub is perfect for a weekly deep-cleansing session. The oatmeal helps to break down impurities in the skin,
while the sea salt gently lifts them from the skin’s surface. Sea salt also contains important trace minerals,
including calcium, iron, and zinc, which are absorbed into the skin and nourish it. This scrub must be made fresh
each time you exfoliate.
Ingredients
8tbsp (120ml) oatmeal
8tbsp (120ml) bran
2tbsp (10ml) sea salt
2tbsp (10ml) milk
Preparation
17
Mix the oatmeal, bran, and sea salt together, then add the milk a little at a time until you have a paste that is moist
to handle but not too sticky.
Application
Rub the mixture into the skin by hand or with a body brush. Concentrate on problem areas, such as the thighs and
buttocks. Shower off.
Wake-up body rub
This body rub is wonderful as an early morning wake-up therapy. The ground rice combined with the yogurt make
a gentle exfoliating scrub, while the peppermint is stimulating and refreshing. The rub must be made fresh each
time you exfoliate.
Ingredients
1 small container plain yogurt
3 sprigs fresh peppermint
2 sprigs fresh spearmint
1 cup (240ml) ground rice
1 drop peppermint essential oil
Preparation
Mix the yogurt and mint together in a blender for three seconds, then refrigerate for 24 hours so that the yogurt
becomes infused with the scent of the mint. Stir the ground rice into the cooled mixture and add the peppermint
essential oil
Application
Rub the mixture all over your body by hand or with a loofah, concentrating on rough skin areas. Shower off.
Energizing ginger
Originally from Asia, ginger is said to have been employed since Greek and Roman time for its medicinal benefits.
This uplifting spice boosts circulation and is a great winter warmer. To give the wake-up body rub some extra zing,
add some grated root ginger-its warming effects will make your skin tingle. Simply peel about 2in (5cm) root
ginger, grate finely, and add it to the recipe just before use. It is important to use freshly grated ginger in order to
make the most of its invigorating enzymes. If you have any ginger left over, chop it into small pieces and infuse it
in some hot water to make a warming tea.
Toning salt rub
Sea salt contains about 97 percent sodium chloride, plus important trace elements, such as calcium, zinc, iron, and
magnesium that can be absorbed through the skin. The minerals act as catalysts for many vital biochemical
reactions, including nerve transmission, digestion, and proper hormone function, and they work to maintain
correct water balance in the body and stabilize levels of acidity and alkalinity. Sea salt’s coarse texture also makes
it ideal for exfoliation and for stimulating the circulation.
Ingredients
3tbsp (45ml) fine sea salt
1tbsp (15ml) cider vinegar
8fl oz (250ml) olive oil
2tbsp (30ml) lemon juice
Preparation
18
Moisten the sea salt with the cider vinegar and lemon juice
Application
Take a hot shower and leave your skin moist. Stand in the bath and rub your body with the olive oil. Gently
massage in the moistened salt, until you feel your skin start to glow. Once you have applied all the salt, use a sisal
mitt to continue gently rubbing in the salt. To finish, run a warm bath and gently massage the oil and salt off your
skin.
Rough skin scrub
Some parts of the body need special treatment to remove the build up of dry, rough skin. This scrub uses apricot
kernels, which are far too aggressive for use on the face, but are excellent for exfoliating tough, neglected areas,
such as the elbows, knees, and heels of the feet.
Ingredients
3tbsp (45ml) apricot kernels
2tbsp (30ml) rice bran
2tbsp (10ml) olive oil
Preparation
Grind the apricot kernels in a coffee grinder or blender, or with a pestle and mortar, until fine, then mix in the rice
bran. Combine the mixture with enough olive to form a thick paste that is not too runny.
Application
Take a little of the paste in the palm of your hand and rub it into the skin using gentle, circular movements. Use a
pumice stone at first, then a pure bristle brush.
Chamomile and calendula rub
This exfoliating rub is especially suitable for the legs, as it will reduce swelling and discomfort at the end of a
long day.
Ingredients
3tbsp (45ml) dried chamomile leaves
3tbsp (45ml) dried calendula flowers
Preparation
Place the herbal mixture in the center of a square of muslin, cheesecloth, or thin cotton and tie it to form a sachet.
Application
Put the pouch under the faucet so that your bath water becomes infused with herbal mixture. While bathing in the
infused water, rub the dampened sachet over your legs and buttocks.
Manicure
The hands are one of the most noticeable parts of the body, so set aside a regular weekly slot to perform a quick
manicure as part of your home spa treatment.
Hands are regularly exposed to extreme conditions, such as immersion in water and detergents, so it is important
to look after them if their skin is to remain soft and supple. Fortunately, hands respond extremely well to a little
tender care. The two most common and problems are dry skin and brittle nails, so give yourself a manicure once a
week and finish with a deep-moisturizing treatment for both hands and nails.
3-step manicure
19
This manicure will take just a few minutes to perform, but will keep your hands and nails looking and feeling
good for the rest of the week. All of the items needed are readily available from pharmacists and beauty stores.
1 Wash your hands thoroughly in soapy water, then scrub the nails gently with a soft nail brush. This increases the
blood circulation to the nails and encourages healthy growth. Immerse your clean hands in a bowl of warm water
containing 2 drops chamomile essential oil. Leave them to soak for two minutes.
2 Apply cuticle cream to the base of each nail and massage it well into the nail bed to encourage blood flow and
healthy growth. Continue massage for about a minute, using circular movements, then gently push the cuticles
back with an orange stick.
3 Apply a rich moisturizer to the hands and massage it in well. If you are giving yourself a manicure at night,
apply petroleum jelly in the same way, put on cotton gloves, and leave it to be absorbed overnight-this is a
wonderfully moisturizing treatment for dry skin.
Olive oil treatment for hands
This home remedy is excellent for dry hands and is also good for eczema. Choose organic extra virgin olive oil for
greatest benefit and apply it at night.
Ingredients
3tbsp (45ml) olive oil
3 drops orange essential oil
2 drops frankincense essential oil
Preparation
Mix all three oils together and store in a dark glass bottle.
Application
Apply the mixture generously all over the hands and massage it in thoroughly. Put on a pair of thin plastic gloves
and leave them on overnight. In the morning, massage your hands again before wiping away the excess oil with a
tissue. Rinse your hands thoroughly and pat dry.
Nail rescue
The combination of cleansing lemon oil and nourishing sweet almond oil in this cream helps to revive dry, flaky
nails, and is particularly effective in cold water.
Ingredients
1tbsp (15ml) beeswax
3 drops lemon essential oil
3tbsp (45ml) sweet almond oil
Preparation
Heat the beeswax in a small glass bowl over a pan of simmering water. When it becomes runny, add the lemon
essential oil and stir thoroughly. Add the almond oil a little at a time, stirring constantly. As the beeswax cools, it
will become solid but pliable. If it is too hard, reheat it and add a little more almond oil, drop by drop.
Application
Apply the wax to the fingers and nails every night as a treatment, once a week for maintenance.
Pedicure
You will walk about 70,000 miles in your lifetime-that’s four times around the world!-so a regular pedicure is a
worthwhile investment to help you put your best foot forward.
20
Feet tend to be the forgotten part of the body, yet they are subjected to considerable strains, not least carrying the
weight of the rest of the body. In addition, they are often crammed into badly fitting shoes-if your feet are sore and
burning at the end of each day, it is probably due to friction from ill-fitting footwear. Considering the stresses
inflicted on feet, it comes as no surprise that many people suffer from hand skin, corns, calluses, chilblains, and
fungal infections. However, a weekly home spa session will keep your feet soft and supple and leave you feeling
relaxed and refreshed.
5-step pedicure
A weekly 10-minute session is all you need to keep your feet beautifully groomed. All of the items needed are
readily available from pharmacists and beauty stores.
1 Soak your feet in warm water with a handful of sea salt to soften the skin. Exfoliate gently to remove the top
layer of dead skin. Use a pumice stone to exfoliate hard areas, such as the heels and ankles. Elsewhere, apply a
grainy body scrub, or rub with sea salt mixed with a little olive oil.
2 Trim the toenails. If they are hard and cracking, soak them first in a small bowl of warm olive oil for five
minutes; if you do this regularly for three or four weeks, you should see a vast improvement in the condition of
your toenails. Cut the nails straight across with nail clippers or nail scissors and file any jagged edges smooth. It is
important to cut the nails straight to avoid the problem of in-growing toenails.
3 Apply cuticle cream to each toenail and massage it well into the nail bed. This will encourage blood flow and
healthy growth. Continue massaging for about a minute, using gentle circular movements, then gently push back
the cuticles with an orange stick.
4 Massage the whole foot with moisturizer or a special cream suitable for rough skin. This will improve the
suppleness of the skin and reduce callus build-up. Concentrate particularly on the heels, where most hard skin
forms.
5 If necessary, deodorize your feet using a natural foot spay. Note that many commercially produced deodorants
can block the skin’s pores and aggravate the problem of foot odor.
Rough skin treatment
Cocoa butter is intensely moisturizing, while calendula is an effective antiseptic, perfect for soothing and healing
inflamed or irritated skin.
Ingredients
3tbsp (45ml) cocoa butter
3 drops calendula essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
Preparation
Heat the cocoa butter in a small bowl over a pan of simmering water. Add the essential oils and mix well.
Application
Cover your feet with the butter, paying particular attention to the soles, then cover with plastic wrap and leave for
15 minutes. Remove the wrap and massage the butter in thoroughly.
Tea tree foot spray
Tea tree oil is a germicidal, anti-fungal oil that is very effective against athlete’s foot and other skin infections.
The lemon juice acts as a natural preservative, so that the ingredients will not oxidize.
Ingredients
21
4tbsp (20ml) fresh lemon juice
5tbsp (75ml) vodka
2 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops tea tree oil
Preparation
Put all of the ingredients into a clean spray bottle and mix thoroughly. Always shake the bottle before use to
re-mix the essential oils.
Application
Spray the mixture over your feet or other body areas, but avoid the face because the alcohol is too drying.
Depilatories
All women yearn for a head of thick, luxurious hair, but very few are happy to tolerate body hair. The good news
is that it is easy to remove it in the privacy of your own bathroom.
If you are blessed with thick hair, the downside is that you probably have hairy legs and there may even be a slight
fuzziness on your upper lip. In fact, 80 percent of women have facial hair and nearly every woman removes the
hair from her legs. Facial hair, in particular, can be a very distressing and embarrassing problem, and it generally
worsens from the age of about 40, when women’s bodies produce progressively less of the female hormone
estrogen and more of the male hormone testosterone. Facial hair can also be a side-effect of taking antibiotics,
anti-depressants, food supplements, steroids, the contraceptive pill, or even be due to polycystic ovary syndrome.
If you are concerned, contact your doctor. Unwanted body hair can usually be removed simply and relatively
painlessly using one of three different techniques: shaving, sugaring, or waxing.
Shaving
Shaving is the fastest and least painful way to remove hair from the legs. You should not use this technique on
your face, however, as it causes the hair to grow back in the form of stubble, which is scratchy and even more
visible. Always shave in the direction of the hair growth, to prevent in-growing hairs.
Cucumber shaving oil
This moisturizing, scented cream contains cucumber to soothe the skin, together with lavender and tea tree oils as
natural emollients. It should be kept in a cool place and used within a few days. Always stir before use.
Ingredients
8oz (225g) cocoa butter
4tbsp (60ml) witch hazel
8tbsp (120ml) sweet almond oil
4 drops tea tree essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
1/2 fresh cucumber, peeled
Preparation
Melt the cocoa butter in a small bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir in the witch hazel and almond oil, then
add the essential oils. Liquidize the cucumber and strain through a sieve. Add 4tsp (20ml) of the collected juice to
the butter mixture. Mix thoroughly and pour into a screw-top container.
Application
Apply the mixture to the skin with the fingertips before shaving. After shaving, remove any excess oil with a hot,
22
damp cloth and gently pat the skin dry with a towel. Your skin will feel soft and moisturized.
Shaving cuts
You can buy special safety razors that will prevent most shaving nicks, but if you do cut yourself, smear the area
with a little wheat germ oil to stop the bleeding, then apply neat tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic.
Sugaring
This ancient Middle Eastern technique involves the use of water and sugar, heated gently together to form a sticky
paste. Sugaring can be used on your face, legs, and bikini line, but you will probably find it rather messy at first.
With practice, however, it will become easy and fuss-free. Sugaring is generally thought to be less painful than
waxing and is said to keep the hairs at bay for longer, usually up to eight weeks. You can buy readymade sugaring
preparations from beauty stores and some pharmacists, but it is just as simple to make your own from sugar and
water.
1 Mix together 4tbsp (20ml) water and 4tsp (20ml) granulated sugar in a metal pan over a gentle heat. When the
sugar has dissolved completely and the liquid is the consistency of runny honey, allow it to cool down.
2 When the mixture has fallen to body temperature, apply it over the area you wish to depilate, using a small
wooden spoon or spatula. Press a strip of clean, cotton gauze over the sugar solution. Allow it to set, then quickly
rip off the cotton. Always pull against the direction of hair growth. Your skin may look slightly red afterward.
3 Finish by rinsing the skin with cold water containing a single drop of tea tree oil, which is a natural antiseptic
and also helps to prevent in-growing hairs.
Waxing
The ancient Egyptians removed body hair with a mixture of crushed birds’ bones, sycamore gum, and cucumber
applied in strips and then ripped off. Fortunately, the formula has now been updated, but in fact the method
remains much the same and still requires a high pain threshold. The advantages are that there is no stubble and
effect is quite long-lasing-very fine hairs reappear after three weeks or so, thicker hairs after about 5-6 weeks. The
hair also becomes finer with repeated waxings, which progressively weaken the hair follicle. The disadvantage,
apart from the pain, is that you must wait for a 1/4-1/2 in (5-10mm) regrowth before you can re-wax. Some
beauticians advise against facial waxing for older women with thin, delicate skin. You can buy pots of wax or wax
strips to use at home; solid wax works best.
1 If using solid wax cut some cotton gauze into about a dozen 4x12in (10x30ml) strips. This will be sufficient to
wax both legs; cut fewer and smaller strips for other areas of the body, as appropriate.
2 Melt the solid wax over a gentle heat until it has liquefied, then use a small brush to apply the melted wax to the
strips. Leave to cool until they reach body temperature.
3 Lightly dust your legs with talcum powder, then lay the wax strips over your legs and smooth the strips down in
the direction of the hair growth. Wait a few seconds for the wax to cool further, then quickly rip off the strips,
pulling against the direction of the hair growth.
4 Rinse your legs in cold water to reduce redness, then pat dry and moisturize.
Body wraps and packs
Wraps and packs are staple items on the beauty spa menu. They help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, boost
the circulation, ease painful joints, and improve problem skin.
The principle of most body wraps is to plaster the skin with ingredients that are high in vitamins, minerals, and
essential oils, which are then absorbed through the pores of the skin into the bloodstream and lymphatic system.
23
This absorption is, in most cases, aided by encasing the body in plastic wrap, bandages, or metal foil, which help
to keep in the heat and raise the body temperature. Once this occurs, the skin becomes red as the blood rushes to
the surface, and the ingredients in the wrap are able to reach the bloodstream more effectively and efficiently.
As the temperature rises, perspiration also occurs, which helps to flush out the toxins and other impurities from
the body that are responsible for cellulite, tiredness, problem skin, and water retention. As the pores of the skin
dilate, they also become more receptive the ingredients in the wrap or mask, which can pass into the skin more
readily.
Mustard pack
Mustard is known for its pyretic effect on the skin; that is, it causes a rise in temperature. This helps to bring blood
to the surface of the skin, thereby increasing the circulation. This mustard pack will relax and relieve tired, aching
joints and muscles.
Ingredients
2tbsp (30ml) mustard powder
8tbsp (120ml) flour
2 drops pine essential oil
2 drops thyme essential oil
Preparation
Mix the mustard and flour into a paste with tepid water, adding a little at a time. Add the essential oils and stir
well. Place the paste into a folded cloth and heat it by placing it on top of a hot radiator or hot-water bottle.
Application
Apply the pack to the painful area. Leave for 10 minutes, then rinse off and pat dry.
Cellulite treatments
We all recognize cellulite, that lumpy, orange-peel skin on the thighs, hips, and buttocks that seem to afflict every
woman over the age of 25. Cellulite is actually by poor circulation, which can slow down the elimination of toxins
and fluid.
Cellulite may be alleviated if the correct changes to diet and lifestyle are made, such as avoiding tea, coffee,
cigarettes, and alcohol. Although cellulite is extremely difficult to shift, spa treatments can help. You will need to
drink plenty of water, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, exfoliate at least once a week to boost circulation to
affected areas, and regularly apply some of the body wrap recipes described in this section. In addition, carry out
the following spa routine twice a week- or every day if you have time- to achieve a visible and lasting result.
1 Direct alternating hot and cold water to the affected area using a powerful shower head. Switch between hot and
cold every 30 seconds for five minutes.
2 Brush the affected area with a dry natural bristle brush. Always brush in the direction of the heart.
3 Rub the skin with sea salt using a sisal mitt. Work in the direction of the heart and make sure that you use light,
circular movements.
4 Have a warm bath, then massage your body with vitamin E oil to smooth the skin’s texture. Mix 3 drops
grape-fruit and 3 drops rosemary essential oils with 2tsp (10ml) sweet almond carrier oil. Massage the oil mixture
into areas of cellulite.
Strawberry and ginger body wrap
Ginger has warming effect on the skin and is an excellent circulatory stimulant. Strawberry has cleansing,
24
astringent properties.
Ingredients
2 ginger roots, each 4in (10cm) long
4tbsp (60ml) kaolin clay powder
15 large strawberries
Preparation
Put all of the ingredients into a blender and whiz for a minute. If the mixture is too runny to adhere to the body,
add more kaolin powder until you achieve the consistency of a thick paste.
Application
Apply the wrap to areas affected by cellulite of poor circulation, then wrap your body in metal foil. Lie down in a
warm room for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off the wrap with warm water. Turn the water to cool for the last 15
seconds, then pat the skin dry.
Slimming wrap
If you are going to a special party and would like to lose a little weight to fit into your favorite party outfit, you
can harness the diuretic effect of these natural minerals and essential oils to achieve “instant”, though temporary,
inch-loss. The wrap uses elasticized cotton bandages soaked in a warm seaweed and clay solution and acts like a
huge poultice, drawing toxins from the body and stimulating fluid expulsion via the body’s won waste disposal
process. You will need sufficient bandages to bind each leg from ankle to thigh. For maximum benefit, exfoliate
first.
Ingredients
3oz (85g) concentrated, dried, micronized seaweed powder
3oz (85g) Fuller’s earth powder
8tbsp (120ml) lime juice
1tbsp (15ml) sweet almond oil
1/2tsp (2.5ml) clear honey
4 drops sandalwood essential oil
2 drops rosemary essential oil
2 drops lavender essential oil
Preparation
Mix the seaweed powder and Fuller’ earth with the lime juice to make a paste. Add a little water if necessary. Stir
in the almond oil and essential oils and mix well. Add a little warm water to thin the paste in to a fluid consistency.
Soak the bandages in the warm seaweed and clay solution.
Application
Staring at the ankles, wind the soaked bandages around your legs. Pull them taut enough to compress the fatty
tissues, but not uncomfortably tight. Lie down in a warm room for 45 minutes, then remove and discard the
bandages and shower off seaweed and clay mixture.
Beautiful baths
Next time you take a bath, don’t just run the water and lie there. Bathing is a golden opportunity for a multitude of
relaxing and enjoyable spa treatments.
Herbs, salts, and essential oils can all be added to your bath to achieve beneficial effects for both the mind and
25
body. Bathing with special oils and herbs can help to detoxify, moisturize, and condition your skin as well as
induce deep relaxation. The bath water should be pleasantly warm, but take care not to run the water too hot or
you may feel sluggish and even become dizzy. In the summer, take a cooling bath. Once you overcome the initial
shock, bathing in cool water is extremely refreshing. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to make it an even
more skin-tingling experience. In the winter, thyme essential oil can be added to help boost your immune system
as protection against colds and flu.
Weekly detoxification
From time to time, most people experience days when they feel lethargic and suffer from headaches, dull skin, or
a bloated stomach. These are all signs of toxin build-up in the body, usually as a result of over-indulgence in fatty
or acidic foods, not eating enough fruit and vegetables, breathing polluted air, not taking enough exercise, and
drinking too much alcohol or smoking cigarettes. Even stress can produce an increase in the production of certain
chemicals in the body, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which make us feel irritable and unwell when they are
released into the bloodstream.
A weekly detoxifying bath is the fastest, most pleasant way to cleanse your system. You can vary the ingredients
you add to the bath water, depending on your individual symptoms.
Detoxifying herbal bath
Adding herbs to your bath has a two-fold effect: their active ingredients are absorbed by the skin and carried to the
bloodstream, and you also inhale their calming vapors. The main ingredient of this detoxifying bath is lavender,
which promotes perspiration and so helps to rid t he body of toxins. Juniper is used to stimulate the elimination of
waste products
Ingredients
10 heads of fresh lavender
2tbsp (10ml) juniper berries
1tbsp (5ml) comfrey leaf
1tbsp (5ml) celery seeds
Preparation
Steep the herbs in hot water for 15-20 minutes. Strain the liquid and put it to one side. Place the strained herbs on
a square of cheesecloth or muslin, then tie it with a piece of string to form a pouch.
Application
Add the herbal liquid to your bath water and hang the herbal sachet immediately beneath the faucet, so that it
hangs in the flow of running water. Get into the bath and enjoy.
Orange bath salts
All home-made bath salt recipes use Epsom salts as their base, which are excellent for the skin. The salts are both
detoxifying and moisturizing, by drawing out impurities but also locking in moisture. Orange essential oil has
strong detoxifying properties.
Ingredients
4tbsp (60ml) Epsom salts
1tbsp (15ml) orris root
2tbsp (30ml) dried orange peel
1 drop orange essential oil
26
3 drop geranium essential oil
Preparation
Mix all of the ingredients together, making sure that the oils are well-absorbed into the salts.
Application
Add a small handful of the mixture to your bath water, then relax and enjoy.
Made for moisturizing
Hard-water deposits and some commercially produced soaps can have a drying effect on the skin. As well as
treating dry skin by applying a rich moisturizer after bathing, you can also add natural moisturizers to your bath
water, including milk, herbs, and natural oils.
Cleopatra’s milk bath
Milk is rich in calcium, vitamins, and minerals and has been added to bath water to soften and revitalize the skin
since Cleopatra’s day. Bathing in milk leaves the skin feeling beautifully conditioned. The only drawback is the
smell, but you can mask this by adding fragrant essential oils. The honey in this recipe deals in moisture and
protects the skin. Store the milk bath in a glass bottle and leave in a cool, dry place.
Ingredients
51fl oz (150ml) milk
3tbsp (45ml) powdered coconut milk
1tsp (5ml) clear honey
3 drops jasmine essential oil
3 drops ylang ylang essential oil
2drops lavender essential oil
Preparation
Put the milk, powdered coconut milk, and honey into a saucepan and heat gently. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
Remove the liquid from the heat and add the essential oils.
Application
Fill the bathtub with water, then add the milk bath liquid.
A taste of honey
Honey has long been used to delay or counteract the effects of aging on the skin. Renowned for its ability to heal
burns, honey’s soothing, moisturizing qualities were utilized in day-to-day skincare products for the face, hands
and body by rich and powerful women throughout history, from the time of Cleopatra.
Conditioning herbal bath
Elderflower, linden blossom, and chamomile have a very soothing effect on the skin. Place the three herbs in a
glass bowl, pour on hot water, and allow it to brew. Strain the liquid and add it to your bath water. Alternatively,
wrap a handful of the herbs in a square of muslin or cheesecloth and tie it with string to form a pouch. Hang the
herbal sachet from the faucet under the flow of water.
Bran softener
Brown rice and regular bran make excellent skin smoothers. Take a rectangle of cheesecloth, about 12x10in
(30x25cm), fold it in half, and sew along two sides to make a small pouch. Fill it with bran or rice, then sew the
final edges together. Rub the pouch all over the skin while you are in the bathtub as a moisturizing exfoliant.
Moisturizing bath oils
27
For a fast way to restore natural oils to parched, dry skin, try adding a few drops of plant or vegetable oil directly
to your bath water. Do not add more than 2tsp (10ml) or your skin will become too greasy. Vary the type of oil
depending on your skin type.
Aromatherapy baths
Adding aromatherapy oils to your bath water is a delicious way to enjoy their therapeutic effects – enveloping
your body in warm water while you inhale the heady scents of your favorite oils is deeply pleasurable experience.
The hot water doubles the effectiveness of the oils: they are absorbed directly from the water into the bloodstream
through the skin and the same time the vaporized scent is inhaled. Take care that the water is not too hot, or the
oils will evaporate entirely and none will remain in the water to penetrate the skin.
Most essential oils can irritate the skin and mucus membranes, so always dilute them in a carrier oil (such as
sweet almond oil) or milk before adding them to your bath water. Mix 4-5 drops of the essential oil with 2tbsp
(30ml) milk or 2tsp (10ml) almond oil, then pour the mixture into the bath water, swirling it around to disperse it.
Chamomile and lavender oils are the exception, because they are both nonirritating. Use just 4-6 drops of the
essential oil and swirl it around in the water before getting into the bathtub. Essential oils can also be mixed with
Dead Sea salts or sea slat before adding them to your bath water.
Baths to help you sleep
If you have trouble sleeping, having a warm bath before going to bed can help you drift off into a calm, deep sleep.
You can make the bath even more effective by adding one of the natural soporific ingredients listed here. They
will help you to get a restful night’s sleep so that you wake up feeling refreshed the next morning.
Caution
Never allow yourself to fall asleep in the bathtub. Get out of the bath the moment you feel you are getting sleep or
your eyelids are becoming heavy.
Chamomile and lavender
Chamomile essential oil has calming properties and is an effective sedative. Lavender is soothing and calming,
and is known for its balancing effect on the nervous system. It can be used to relieve headaches and help prevent
insomnia. Dilute 7-8 drops lavender or chamomile essential oil in 3tbsp (45ml) sweet almond carrier oil and add
three-quarters to your bath water. Rub the remaining oil into the soles of your feet, just before getting into bed, to
enhance the effect.
Skullcap
This bitter, medicinal herb is part of the mint family. It will not make your bath pleasantly scented, but it is
remarkable effective for insomnia. It acts on the nervous system to promote a sense of deep relaxation.
Hops
Hop flowers have a tranquilizing effect. Steep a handful of the flowers in hot water, straight, then ass the cooling
liquid straight to the bath water. Alternatively, tie a handful of the dried flowers in a square of muslin with string
and hang it under the faucet as the water is running.
Valerian
This is another natural ingredient know for its sleep-inducing properties. Use it sparingly, because it is a powerful
tranquilizer. Make an infusion by adding fresh valerian to hot water and allowing it to brew for a few minutes.
Strain and cool the liquid, then add the liquid directly to the bath water.
Refreshing showers
28
Showers are refreshing, invigorating, uplifting, and relaxing. They are the perfect way to galvanize your system
and wake up your mind, ready for the day ahead.
Pouring running water over areas of the body is known as an “affusion,” and is an effective way to spring-clean
the body and improve its biological functions. Showers can be used in many ways-both hot and cold and at
varying intensities-to achieve different effects. Take a hot shower to kickstart your circulation and relieve aching
muscles. Use short, sharp bursts of cold water to invigorate your mind and body and body and to reduce
inflammation.

restore lost tautness and vitality. Such spa showers are even said to help prevent premature aging of the skin and
eliminate fatigue. Repeated every day, the blitzguss will strengthen your immune system and help protect against
infections.
1 Take a warm shower until your skin is warm and glowing.

should take no more than 30 seconds.
3 Repeat steps 1 and 2, then get out of the shower and pat off the excess water. Do not rub the skin, and dress
warmly as soon as you are dry.
Strawberry shower gel
Deliciously scented and energizing, fresh strawberries make this shower gel wonderfully refreshing. The gel is
cleaning, astringent, and cooling, and particularly suitable if you have greasy skin and a tendency to spots on your
back and chest. The gel can be stored in the refrigerator and kept for about a week. Forming gels are difficult to
make at home, so you will need to buy an unscented bubble bath base, which can be purchased from many beauty
stores and pharmacists.

1/2cup (120ml) fresh strawberries
1/2cup (120ml) fresh raspberries

Cleansing
It is important to follow a daily routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing in order to keep your skin looking
its best. Here we show you how to use simple, natural products to give your face a spa cleansing treatment in the
comfort of your own home.
All skin is made up of the same constituent layers, yet no one's skin is quite the same as the next person's. The
condition and health of your skin depends on many factors, including what you eat, how much you exercise, how
effectively you protect your skin, and how well you look after it on a daily basis. This does not mean spending a
fortune; some of the best beauty products are the least expensive and most readily available.
Fresh, carefully made beauty products can be as good as or better than commercial products. This is because you
have absolute control over what goes into the preparations you make and can avoid any ingredients that do not
suit your skin. The live cultures and invigorating enzymes in fresh cosmetics make them unbeatable for bringing
life and vitality to your skin.
WHAT MAKES GOOD SKIN?
Unfortunately, much of how good your skin looks is determined by your genes - if your parents have good skin,
the chances are that you will have, too. You also inherit the amount of sebum - the skin's natural moisturizer - that
your skin produces; in hot countries, where the skin needs greater protection from the sun, the native complexion
tends to be oilier than that of people from colder countries, who tend to have rather dry skin.
Environmental factors also have an effect on the skin. If you regularly go on vacation to hot climates and do not
use sufficient sun protection, your skin will soon become damaged by the ultraviolet rays, which can lead to wrin-
kles and premature aging. Other factors can be damaging, too, including pollution, central heating, and harsh
ASSESSING YOUR SKIN TYPE
Before you decide what to use o cleanse your skin, you need to assess the type of skin you have. There a e four
basic categories: normal, dry, oily, and combination skin.
NORMAL SKIN
This has just enough sebum to keep tile skin smooth and supple without causing problems such as blackheads and
blemishes. Normal skin needs little special care and has an enviably fine texture.
DRY SKIN
Dry skin is also fine-textured, but it tends to be thin and prone to thread veins. There is insufficient sebum to keep
31
the skin nourished, and without additional care, dry skin has a tendency to become rough and flaky, leading to fine
lines and premature wrinkles. Rich moisturizing creams and regular exfoliation help.
OILY SKIN
Oily skin produces more sebum than it needs, which means that the skin will have fewer wrinkles, but a tendency
to blackheads and acne as the pores become blocked. The skin itself Is often thick and the pores large. Oily shin
needs particularly thorough cleansing to keep it problem-free.
COMBINATION SKIN
This is a combination of normal and oily skin. The oily part is usually the so-called T-zone, the area across the
forehead and down the nose. The oily areas need more thorough cleansing than the rest of the face.
WHAT IS CLEANSING?
Cleansing should be the first step of your skincare routine. It removes the dirt, old make-up, and sweat that
accumulate on the skin every day. Cleansing should be thorough, but it should also be gentle. A light,
easy-to-smooth formula is ideal. Warm it in the palm of your hand first, then massage it gently into the skin before
wiping it off with a soft facial tissue or cotton ball- Never drag the skin. If your shin is particularly dry or oily, you
will get a more therapeutic effect by choosing a cleanser that is suited to your skin type.

The second step of your facial beauty routine is toning. Toners are cooling and refreshing, help to remove any
remaining traces of cleanser, tighten the skin, and close the pores.
As with cleansing, the toner you use should be determined by your skin type. Water is the most natural toner,
and should be used lukewarm or cold -it is particularly revitalizing when used cold. However, oily skin requires
34
a more astringent formula to help reduce the levels of sebum (the skin's natural moisturizer) and refine open
pores. Many commercially made toners are alcohol-based, which can be harsh, particularly on dry or sensitive
skin. If you take the time to make your own natural toner, you can determine exactly what goes into it and be
sure that it will be kind and gentle.
All-purpose spray toner
This toner is suitable for all skin types. It can be applied as a conventional toner after cleansing or used as a
quick-fix spritzer, which is deliciously cooling and refreshing in the summer. Store it in the refrigerator and use
within one month.

Alternatively, store the liquid in a spray-top bottle and squirt the toner in a fine mist over your face
Milk toner for dry skin

Place the lemon balm into a bowl and pour on the boiling water. Cover and leave to infuse. When cool, strain
the liquid into another bowl. Mix the boric acid and witch hazel together, then add to the herbal infusion.
Decant the liquid into a sterile bottle.

Citrus toner for oily skin
Citrus fruits give this toner a deliciously sharp and fruity scent. The formula is excellent for refreshing and clearing
oily and problem skins.

areas.
Treatment toner for thread veins
As we get older, tiny red veins sometimes became visible across the cheeks and nose. This treatment toner is effective
if used regularly. Lemon juice is highly antiseptic and has an astringent effect on the skin. Neroli is a refreshing tonic
35
for dry, mature skins; rose is a cooling, soothing oil that is beneficial to dry, inflamed skin. Store the toner in the
refrigerator for up to three months.
INGREDIENTS
5tsp (25ml) glycerin Juice of 1 lemon, strained 1 drop neroli essential oil 1 drop rose essential oil
PREPARATION
Mix the glycerin and lemon juice together thoroughly, then add the essential oils. Decant the liquid into a sterile bottle.
APPLICATION
Moisten a cotton ball with toner and dab it, very gently, over the veins.
Rosacea
Thread veins can be due to a condition known as “rosacea,” In which heat or sunlight stimulates the release of
chemicals that encourage the blood vessels to enlarge. As well as using the treatment toner described here, avoid
extremes of heat or cold, chocolate, spicy foods, oranges, and red wine, and take regular supplements of vitamins BI
and B2.
Flower water
In former times, toners were actually the by-product of essential oil distillation; rosewater and lavender water were
both popular. You can make your own flower water by making an infusion of flowers or herbs and adding essential
oils to increase the efficacy of the formula, Store the flower water in a refrigerator and use within a month. Refer to
the table for the best herbs and oils for your particular skin type.
INGREDIENTS
1tbsp (15ml) fresh herbs or 1tsp (5ml) dried herbs (see chart) 3fl oz (75ml) boiling water 1 drop essential oil

Place the herbs in a bowl and pour the boiling water over them. Cover, leave to cool, then strain. Finally, add a drop of
essential oil to the herbal infusion. Decant into a sterile bottle.
APPLICATION
Moisten a cotton ball with toner and smooth gently over the whole face. Use daily, concentrating on the nose and
cheeks.
Moisturizing
The final step in your spa facial routine is moisturizing, which should both rehydrate and nourish the skin to keep it
soft and supple.
Moisturizer keeps water locked in the skin cells by helping to reinforce the thin, oily layer on the surface of the skin,
known as the hydrolipidic film -literally, water-oil film. This film is vital in preventing moisture from being lost
through the skin, and in keeping the skin smooth, supple, and youthful. Applying moisturizer is also a. good
opportunity to massage the skin, which helps to stimulate blood circulation and increase muscle tone.
WATERWORKS
Water, taken internally, is the best way to maintain healthy skin and make sure that the skin cells are plumped up
with water molecules. Drinking eight glasses a day may seem like a tall order, but go to any spa or health farm and
that is the rule of the day. Try to build it into your daily routine by always having a bottle of mineral water handy - by
the phone, on your desk, beside the bed. When you wake up, start the day with a glass of water, then drink another
glass while you are dressing. At about 11 am, instead of reaching for the coffee pot, have a little freshly squeezed
orange juice topped up with mineral water, and the same around 4pm. Pour yourself a glass of water to sip while you
36
are having a soak in the bathtub in the evening, and have another glass before you go to bed. That’s six-just one more
glass each with your lunch and evening meal and you've hit the target. Not that difficult, is it?
WHO NEEDS MOISTURIZER?
The answer is: we all do. Each cell in the body is composed of 80 percent water and it is the water that gives the skin
its plump, healthy look. Unfortunately, as we age, we gradually lose that hydration and the skin starts to wrinkle and
shrivel. If you have a naturally dry skin, you will certainly need to apply a light moisturizer during the day and an
intensive moisturizer at night However, even if you have naturally oily skin, you should still moisturize. The more you
try to strip the natural sebum from your skin, the more it tries to produce - many beauty specialists agree that regular
use of a light moisturizer can help to rebalance oily skin.
Vitamin-rich moisturizer for dry skin
Dry and mature skins need a high-intensity moisturizer with a rich, creamy texture. Ideally, it should be enriched with
vitamin E, which is known to be deficient in prematurely aging skin. Vitamin A is also important, because it helps
blemishes to heal. Use the moisturizer within two months.

Lips and mouth
Communicating with people involves watching their mouths as they speak, so attractive, healthy lips and fresh breath
are vital. Care of the lips and mouth should be an important part of your beauty regime.
Flossing, regular brushing, and gargling with a good mouthwash will help to keep your mouth and teeth really clean,
all day. The lips also need special care, since they have no sweat glands; their and few sebaceous glands; their only
natural protection is saliva. However, this is a double-edged sword, since the constant evaporation of moisture from
the lips can lead to dryness and chapping. The best protection you can offer your lips is to apply a lip balm or lip salve
regularly, which seals in the moisture and provides a protective coating coating over the lips.
Look for products that contain UV filters to help protect the lips against sun damage. Alternative, make your own lip
salve using natural ingredients that are free chemicals and artificial sweeteners. You can also make your own
mouthwashes.

your lips with a little of the balm. Simple place a smell amount of salve onto an old, soft toothbrush and rub it gentle
over the lips.
Eyes
Eyes are an extremely sensitive and delicate part of the face, yet we often neglect them. If your eyes are red and puffy,
then will benefit from a little tender loving care.
Our eyes undergo many stresses and strains each day-we rub them when we are tired, put all sorts of cosmetics on
them, stare at glaring screens all day, and submit them to dry, smoky atmospheres. As a result, eyes can look red and
blotchy by the end of the day. Instead of resorting to commercially made products, use gentle, natural ingredients such
as eyebright and calendula to soothe and relieve tired eyes. Take care never to put essential oils into the eyes.

problem skin
For many people, the skin is an indicator of emotional overload and stress, which can lead to spots and blemishes.
Help your skin by using these natural treatments in the restful atmosphere of a home spa.
Blemishes and spots are common in teenagers, but when you get older, you expect to have left all that behind you.
However, stress and negative emotions, such as fear, anxiety, and anger, can all produce a recurrence of problem skin.
A large part of the benefit of spa treatments is that they are so relaxing and de-stressing, so it is important to try to
recreate that calming atmosphere at home while enjoying these skin treatments. Shut the door on the outside world,
with all its stressful stimuli, and indulge in a little bit of “me-time”- you will feel better and look better. As well as
relaxing, it is important to get plenty of sleep, because maximum cell renewal occurs during the night. Drink lots of
water to KEEP toxins flushed out of your system, and avoid greasy foods and those containing additives. Instead, eat
plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
TREATING ACNE
Although 80 percent of teenagers suffer from acne, it can, and increasingly does, strike at any age. Studies in the
40
United States have shown that acne in later life can be triggered and exacerbated by problems such as stress, anxiety,
and depression.
Acne in adolescence is triggered by the male hormone testosterone, which is present in the body to encourage growth.
However, it can have an over stimulating effect on the sebaceous glands in the face, leading to blocked pores, spots,
and blackheads. In later life, stress and poor diet are considered aggravating factors in acne, but it is doubtless still the
excessive sebum that is most to blame, and this can be due to inherited or hormonal factors.
Until recently, it was thought that the best way to deal with acne was to strip the excess sebum from the skin. However,
it is now known that this actually stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce yet more sebum. The best treatment is
therefore gentle washing to remove dirt from the acid mantle of the skin and prevent the bacterial infection that causes
spots.
Oatmeal wash for blackheads
Oatmeal is an excellent cleansing ingredient. The lemon juice in this recipe is mildly astringent and gently tones the
skin, while the olive oil helps to soften the blackheads so that they leave the skin easily.
INGREDIEHTS
2tbsp (30ml) fine oatmeal
6tbsp (90ml) plain yogurt
2tbsp (30ml) lemon juice
1tbsp (15ml) chopped parsley

Rub the face wash over your skin with clean fingertips- Massage it gently over the skin for about five minutes, then
rinse off with warm water. Finally, splash your face with cold water and pat dry. Try to repeat this routine three times a
day - morning, noon, and night.
Qatmeal
The double-action ingredient oatmeal is very useful for problem skins, since it both calms the skin and absorbs oil.
When buying commercially produced cleansers, choose a gentle, oatmeal-based product and use it three times a day
-little and often is the trick. Try not to touch your face too often, to avoid the reintroduction of bacteria. Seek medical
advice if you find little improvement.
Anti-spot night cream
This cream contains lactic acid, which combats bacteria, and tea free oil, which is second-to-none in its effect on spots
and blemishes.

aging skin
Although loss of skin tone is inevitable with age, there are ways to postpone it. Regular facial massages and
nourishing moisture masks can help to delay the onset of wrinkles and improve their appearance when they do arrive.
As we get older, lower hormone levels reduce the skin's production of sebum. If you have particularly oily skin, you
may be grateful at first, since your skin will be less prone to blemishes and spots. However, as the level of sebum
drops still further, your skin can become much more sensitive and dry, and this will increase the development of lines
and wrinkling. Fortunately, facial massages stimulate blood circulation and the production of collagen, while facial
scrubs remove dead skin and stimulate cell renewal. Extra-rich night creams moisturizing treatments are also effective
in keeping older skin soft and hydrated.
Weekly anti-wrinkle treatment
This facial treatment smooths the skin and reduces any redness and blotchiness. The honey and cider vinegar help to
restore the skin's natural acid balance, while yeast is rich in vitamin 8, which helps to prevent flaky, eczema-type

Sun protection
Exposure to the sun has a terribly damaging effect on the skin, and the face is one of the most exposed
areas of the body. If you do suffer from sunburn, use spa treatments to cool down the skin and soothe
painful areas.
UVA rays are low-energy rays that penetrate deep into the skin, disturbing its very structure - the collagen and elastin
- and causing premature wrinkling and sagging. UVB rays have a higher energy and can cause sunburn to the top
layer of the skin. These rays are also responsible for the development of malignant melanoma (skin cancer). In order
to protect the skin, you need to use a commercially produced chemical sunblock or barrier sunscreen with a sun
protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Never stay in the sun for longer than recommended by the manufacturers in the
directions on your sunscreen.
Sunburn treatment
Take a cool shower to reduce the temperature of the skin, then place a damp towel or cloth over the burned area while
43
resting. The following treatment should then be applied (it is suitable for all areas of the body and face).

water, pat dry, and moisturize well (this is important as egg white is very drying).
shampoos
The thickness, color, and texture of your hair are inherited, but whatever your particular hair type, it needs the very
best care and attention to keep it looking good - these home spa treatments will do just that.
Hair is composed mainly from a protein known as keratin, and is fed from tiny blood vessels at the base of each
follicle (hair root). The follicles are lubricated by sebum from nearby sebaceous glands in the skin. The average hair
grows about 1/2in (1cm) per month, and you normally lose between 50 and 150 hairs every day.
A head of healthy hair shines because the cuticle is made from overlapping scales, which lie flat and reflect the light.
Chemical treatments, such as bleaching and perming, plus the use of electrical dryers, crimpers, and tongs, can cause
the hair to become dull. Chlorine and salt are also damaging -you should always wash and condition your hair after
swimming.
It was once thought that shampooing every day was bad for the hair, since it washed away the hair's natural
moisturizing oils. However, trichologists now agree that daily washing is important for keeping hair clean and healthy,
as long as a mild shampoo is used and the moisture is put back in the form of conditioner.
First, assess the overall condition of your hair to help you determine the type of product to choose. Normal hair is
strong and glossy; dry hair is brittle and often becomes frizzy; oily hair becomes greasy extremely quickly and often
looks limp.
SHAMPOOING
Trichologists claim that shampooing is the single most important aspect of hair health - it keeps the hair clean and the
scalp stimulated. There are four basic stages to follow to make sure that you get the best from your hair.
1 To avoid tangles while shampooing, run a wide-toothed comb through your dry hair. Remove any knots from the
ends, then gradually work your way up toward the roots. Once you have rid the hair of tangles, brush it to help remove
any dust, dirt, and dead skin cells. Brushing also increases the blood circulation of the scalp, helping to rejuvenate the
hair, aid new growth, and redistribute the natural oils.
2 Next, pre-soak your hair (so that you need less shampoo). Apply warm water and gently draw your fingers through
the hair as the water flows through it. Tug gently at the hair near to the scalp, to improve circulation.
3 Pour a little shampoo into the palm of one hand and rub your hands together. Smooth your hands over your head to
apply the shampoo, moving your hands from the roots of your hair down toward the ends. Carefully massage the scalp
with your fingertips for a couple of minutes. Every few seconds, run your fingers through your hair from top to bottom
45
to make sure there are no tangles.
4 The final, all-important, stage is rinsing. This is vital for healthy, shiny hair; the reason many people have dull hair is
mat it is covered with a thin film of shampoo residue. Even if you think your hair is sufficiently rinsed, do it just one
more time. Finish with a final rinse of cold water to refresh and invigorate the scalp, then condition your hair. There is
no need to shampoo more than once, unless there is a lot of sun oil or beach sand in your hair.
Daily shampoo
Soapwort is a naturally frothy herb that makes a mild but effective shampoo, perfect for everyday use and for all hair
types. It has strong cleansing properties, but will not strip the hair of its natural oils. The rosemary helps to give the
hair extra body. As the shampoo is made with fresh ingredients, you need to use it within a month.
INGREDIENTS
2tsp (10ml) crushed soapwort root
2tsp (10ml) fresh rosemary
5/4pints (750ml) water
PREPARATION
Place the soapwort root and the rosemary into a saucepan with the water and bring to the boil. Cover the pan and
simmer for five minutes. Take off the heat and leave to cool. Strain the liquid, pressing the root down well, and
transfer the liquid to a sterilized bottle.
APPLICATION
Wet the hair and apply sufficient shampoo to produce a good lather. Rinse well, then condition.
Dry shampoo
When you simply don't have time to shampoo your hair and dry it, you can revive greasy hair by using this dry
shampoo. The powdered ingredients attract and remove the dirt, while the rosemary oil is naturally cleansing and
stimulating and is an excellent treatment for dandruff and hair loss. Use within one month.
INGREDIENTS
2tbsp (30ml) Fuller's earth
2tbsp (30ml) orris root powder
1tbsp (15ml) arrowroot
10 drops rosemary oil
PREPARATION
Mix all of the ingredients together and store in a sterilized screw-top jar.
APPLICATION
Sprinkle the shampoo over your hair and rub lightly into the scalp and hair for a few minutes. Brush out thoroughly
with a soft brush, until your hair is shiny and dust-free.
conditioners
conditioning your hair is important because it helps to smooth the hair cuticle, which improves the hair’s natural sheen
and manageability. Just follow a few simple steps in your home spa routine to keep your hair health and beautiful.
Shampooing causes the hair cuticles (the outer hair cells) to interlock and can lead to tangles. Conditioning the hair
smooths these cells, so that you can comb your hair more easily. A conditioner also gives the hair extra shine. It is
practically impossible to over-condition thick, curly hair, but fine or thin hair can become limp if over-conditioned.
You should always apply conditioner after swimming, because chlorine dries out the hair.
46
The active conditioning ingredients used in commercial products are known as “cationic surfactants”-chemicals that
are attracted to dry and damaged hair. However, they do little more than temporarily coat the hair. Conditioners made
from natural ingredients tend to be more compatible with the composition of the hair, leaving it smoother and more
manageable.
Conditioning
There are four basic stages to follow when conditioning your hair to make sure that you get the best results.
1 Pour a small amount of conditioner into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Run your hands over
your hair, starting about 3-4in (8-10cm) down from the scalp and working right to the ends. Never rub conditioner into
your scalp or apply it to the hair near the scalp, since it could become greasy.
2 If you have long hair that is dry and damaged at the ends, apply a little extra conditioner to this area. Leave the
conditioner on your hair for the length of time recommended by the manufacturer on the bottle; most commercially
produced conditioners work virtually instantaneously.
3 Rinse, rinse, and rinse again; leaving a residue of conditioner on the hair will make it dull and limp. Finish with a
cold-water rinse.
4 Wrap your hair in a thick cotton towel and press against the hair with your hands to absorb the excess moisture. Use
a wide-toothed comb to remove any tangles, starting at the ends of the hair.

DAMAGED HAIR

extended period of time - peroxide-based colorants are an obvious example. Overprocessing and styling hair can dry
out the hair shaft, leading to split ends and a dull, lackluster appearance. Excessive cashing with chemical shampoos
can exacerbate the problem of greasy hair by actually stimulating the scalp to produce more sebum. Mild, natural
products will help to repair damaged hair and scalp.

Hair protection
We all know how bad the sun is for our ski, but many people are unaware that the sun adversely affect the hair, too.
Here are some simple ways to shield your hair from sun and sea without going to great expense.
The sun causes the hair to lighten and streak, taking it from a healthy looking shade to a frizzy, dry mess. When
combined with the effects of the wind, heat, salt, and chlorine, is it any wonder that summer is the peak season for hair
disasters? The sun may be natural, but it can be just as damaging to the hair as applying bleach. This is bad for the new
hair just appearing from your scalp, but longer hair will have already endured this environmental abuse at least once
before. A hate is the best protection when in the sun, but it is not always practical. However, commercially produced
hair tonics are widely available, or you can make your own.

bottle.

Spray the tonic onto the hair before swimming or sunbathing and comb through. Leave it on the hair for as long as you
like-it will make your hair shiny and soft.
Intensive hair sunscreen
If you have highlighted or very dry hair, you will need to use a strong sunscreen. This oily formula will shield your
hair from around 30 percent of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. It also acts as a softening, heavy-duty conditioner
to prevent the hair from drying out in the sun. It is particularly effective on tined, permed, or chemically treated hair,
which tends to be more porous and thus more prone to damage by the elements. The sunscreen can be stored for up to
six months.
