Vestas-American Wind Technology Inc is a fast-growing sustainable energy company that makes, installs and services wind turbines and wind turbines and wind power plants, with more than 50 sites throughout predominantly rural areas in North America. Although not every company has the same safety challenges as Vestas-American, its leadership lessons learned and approach may be beneficial for propelling safety performance and culture. Martha Wyrsch, Vestas-American president, brought high expectations for safe performance and set the tone to drive cultural change: This includes: 1. The company communicated that relatively quick cultural and performance change was doable. 2. Managers took a more realistic look at historical safety data. 3. Developed methods to help employees plan their work and identify hazards. 4. To address most-pressing injuries, started a soft-tissue personal safety training intervention in one business unit. With strong safety leadership, it is possible to relatively quickly overcome implementation and communication obstacles, and move toward high-level safety performance and culture.
