The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce

                                           September 2009
Welcome NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration)! The foundation for this
achievement has been decades in the making, and has involved small businesses, large
businesses, individuals, for profits, non-profits, and city, county, state, and federal
governments. It is a large puzzle made up of small, medium, and large pieces, with each of
us important in making the finished picture.

There has been a contract signing, a ground breaking, and soon, a welcoming BBQ with
some of the NOAA employees and families considering a move to Newport. This event is planned for the last weekend of
September, and will be a continuation of a showcase for our community.

Individuals and families will be ‘shopping’ for homes, banks, schools, doctors, dentists, restaurants, places to buy their
gas, clothes, furniture, gifts, and so much more. We will all want to put our best foot forward, so please take a look at
your storefront, your home, your neighborhood.....make sure that your are looking good with curbs clear of weeds, litter,
and those never ending cigarette butts....shrubs trimmed, lawns mowed, signs bright and cheery, mailboxes marked,
addresses easy to find.

I drive our city streets every day and see trash piled into bushes surrounding business parking lots, curbs with litter and
cigarette refuse in the gutters, parking strips and curbsides filled with weeds, and empty storefronts that look forgotten. I
also see businesses and private properties that are amazingly wonderful! They are landscaped, kept free of litter, well
maintained, and invite folks to stop, linger, and stay awhile.

We want NOAA employees, their families, and others considering a move, to make Newport their home. Our curb appeal
is our face to our visitors. Our residents are our ambassadors, each making that best first impression. Each of us is
important in presenting the picture of Newport we want all to see.

Please take that seriously......check your ‘curb appeal’ and be ready for a new addition to our family....NOAA!
                                                                                              ~Linda Neigebauer

As we wrapped up August, the Chamber held a Friday Luncheon called
$5-Buck Friday. This BBQ, which was held at the Newport Parks and
Recreation Center has become an annual event. It’s one I always look forward
to. Everyone arrives in a good mood with a smile to match, and they remain
that way all throughout the luncheon! This year, they had an even bigger
reason to smile as they arrived. Lunch was on Umpqua Bank. Doug Hunt
asked if we would mind terribly if Umpqua sponsored this year’s luncheon,
and we gratefully accepted the offer. (It was rather like asking your dog to hold your cheese sandwich).
It is safe to say that Umpqua Bank and Doug Hunt are “Can-Doers”.

We like having these events at the Newport Recreation Center. The Parks and Recreation team helped our
event run so smoothly, they made sure that we had everything we needed, from tables and chairs to a monster
grill, they made it look so easy! All we had to do was arrive, and prepare lunch. They even had another
function in part of the room we were going to be using, which wasn’t slated to leave until 11:30. A tight
turn-around, but they handled it seamlessly. It is safe to say that the Newport Parks and Recreation Team are

Enter Rich Glasgow of Lin-Com 911. (Thankfully) Rich dropped into the preparation madness about a half
hour before the luncheon and simply said “I’m here to grill.” He flipped burgers and hot dogs and fed the
masses, without as much as us asking him to do so. He just jumped in and took on the task. It’s not uncommon
for Rich to jump in and roll up his sleeves at Chamber functions as well as many community functions. We
first met Rich when he was the Commander at the Coast Guard station and his wife Linda worked at the
Chamber. Through Linda and Rich the Chamber and the Coast Guard developed a great relationship that led to
many joint community projects. Rich has been and continues to be one of the Chambers “assets”. He is an
inspiration to other volunteers and is always very humble about his accomplishments. It is safe to say that Rich
 Glasgow is a “Can-Doer”.

Newport gets NOAA! Probably the most exciting news for Newport in years! An idea that became a reality
due to the diligence of Don Mann, The Port of Newport Commissioners and staff, the County, the City of
Newport, the community, and the list goes on and on. (Too many to list here) Everyone involved brought a
piece of the puzzle together to create success! There have been some celebrations, and will be many more
along the way in this community. Many signs and reader boards are springing up with the words “Newport
Welcomes NOAA”. I urge you to join in and show your support as we continue to receive many visitors in the
coming months from NOAA! It is safe to say that the vision minded community partners who made this
happen for Newport and the State of Oregon are “Can-Doers”.

If you look at the above examples, remember that we
