					   PRAYERS FOR THE LORD’S MERCY
          AND FORGIVENESS
1. God’s promise of forgiveness.

L.: God has promised forgiveness to all
Who truly repent, turn to Christ in faith
    And are themselves forgiving.
In silence we call to mind our sins:....

All: Merciful God, we have sinned,
In what we have thought and said,
In the wrong we have done
And in the good we have not done.
     We have sinned in ignorance;
     We have sinned in weakness;
     We have sinned
     Through our own deliberate fault.
We repent and turn to You.
     Forgive us,
For the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ,
     And renew our lives
To the glory of Your name. Amen.

L.: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us
our sins and bring us to everlasting life.

All: Amen.

2. Sanctification through forgiveness

L: We ourselves are trying to obtain new life,
   But often we fail.
Before we partake of the bread and wine,
   We want to sanctify ourselves
And so we confess our sins.

 (short silence)

                          1
All:
God, almighty and forgiving, good and loving,
We turn towards you and pray for those we love,
Who are dearer to us than life.

Protect them and keep them from harm
In body, mind and spirit.

Deepen their desire to know Your will,
And strengthen them to do it.

Help them in their struggle with the world,
With selfishness, with laziness
And with forgetfulness of their own souls.

Help us as well,
So that our own lives do not contradict
The life we desire for them.
Let it serve them as an example
And help them in their struggle for goodness.

We thank You for those who are dear to us,
For the privilege
Of guiding their steps towards You,

For the love which binds our hearts together,
For its joy, for its solace
And for the strength it gives us
In trouble and temptation.

Help us to keep that love strong.

May no selfishness or misunderstanding weaken it.
May it bless us to the end. Amen

                         2
3. A new community through forgiveness

L.: If we say we have no sin,
We deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
    Trusting in God’s mercy,
We ask forgiveness for our sins.

Reader: Almighty God,
You judge not by outward appearances
And You know how often we turn away from You
        In thought, word and deed.
Forgive us and help us to live
As Your loving sons and daughters.

         Silence …

All: Redeemer God,
Give us grace to amend our ways,
So that we may walk in newness of life,
         Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reader: Gracious God, You have called us
To be a new community in Christ
        And yet we remain divided.
        Forgive us our fear, anxiety,
        Prejudice and misunderstandings.
        Strengthen our common bonds
        and deepen our resolve
to promote the unity of Your church.

         Silence …

All: Redeemer God,
Give us grace to amend our ways,
So that we may walk in newness of life,
         Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reader: Loving God, friend of sinners
And author of good news for the poor,
Too often we neglect the needy

                           3
        And enjoy our freedom
        At the expense of others.
Forgive us our pride and arrogance,
        Our desire to dominate.
Melt the hardness of our hearts
        And help us to love
        Both neighbor and stranger.

       Silence …

All: Redeemer God,
Give us grace to amend our ways,
So that we may walk in newness of life,
       Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Leader: Christ gave Himself for our sins. Amen

4. The sins of the world

All: Lord, the sins of the world are heavy upon us.
We participate in the unequal distribution
     Of food and drink,
Of the goods of this world.
We ask you to help us
     In overcoming the temptation
     To surround ourselves
With more and more material goods.
     We need Your insight, Lord,
To see that we use too many natural resources
     For our own consumption,
Wasting the riches of the earth.
Make us live in Your Spirit,
     Respecting this beautiful creation.
     In humility, Lord,
We bow our heads and confess our guilt.
Raise us up and guide us in this life,
So that we ourselves may be a blessing
To this world, today and all the days of our
     lives, forever and ever. Amen.

                           4
5. Renewal through forgiveness

L : Where ignorance, self-love and insensitivity
        Have fractured life in community,
All: Give your light, O God of love.
L : Where injustice and oppression
Have broken the spirit of peoples,
All: Give your light, O God of liberation.
L : Where hunger and poverty, illness and death
Have made life an unbearable burden,
All: Give your light, O God of grace.
L : Where suspicion and hatred, conflict and war
        Have challenged your goodness,
All: Give your light, O God of peace.
L : Eternal God,
Open the eyes of the nations and peoples,
So that they may walk in the light of love.
        Remove the ignorance and stubbornness
        Of nations and peoples,
        So that they may drink
From the fountains of your goodness.
All: Amen.

6. Forgiveness: You know us as we are

We confess to You, Lord, what we are.
We are not the people
We like others to think we are.
We are afraid to admit even to ourselves
What lies in the depths of our souls.
But we do not want to hide our true selves from You.
We believe that You know us as we are,
And yet You love us.
Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge;
Teach us to respect ourselves for Your sake.

Give us the courage
To put our trust in Your guiding power.

                            5
Raise us up from the paralysis of guilt
And lead us to the freedom and energy of people,
Whose faults are forgiven.

For those who through long habit of sinfulness
Find forgiveness hard to accept,
We ask you to break their bondage and set them free.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

7. A litany of Confession (Cape Town)

Reader Lord, we confess
Our day-to-day failure to be human.
All Lord, we confess to You.
Reader Lord, we confess that we often fail
To love with all we have and are,
Often because we do not fully understand
what loving means, often because we are
       afraid of risking ourselves.
All Lord, we confess to You.
Reader Lord, we cut ourselves off from each other
And we erect barriers of division.
All Lord, we confess to You.
Reader Lord, we confess that by silence
       And ill-considered words
We have built up walls of prejudice.
All Lord, we confess to You.
Reader Lord, we confess that by selfishness
       And lack of sympathy
       We have stifled generosity
And left little time for others.
All Lord, we confess to You.
Reader Holy Spirit, speak to us.
       Help us to listen
       to Your word of forgiveness.
       Come, fill this moment
and free us from our sins.
All Amen.

                         6
8. A prayer by St. Andrew

Reader Look upon me in compassion, O God,
          With Your merciful eyes,
          And accept my fervent confession.
All Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.
Reader Instead of freedom from possessions,
          O Savior, I have pursued a life
          In love with material things;
And now I bear a heavy burden.
All Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.
Reader Lord, You love humankind
And desire that all should be saved.
In Your goodness call me back
          And accept me in repentance.
All Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me.

9. A prayer of Confession (Panama)

All : Our God and Father,
           We confess with shame
That we have come short of Your glory.
We have not done what we ought to have done.
           We have remained deaf
To the cries of those who hurt.
We have remained dumb in the face of evil.
We have allowed the shadow of death
To hover over the innocently condemned.
           We have failed to proclaim
           With power and conviction
           Your liberation for the oppressed.
           We repent.
           In Your grace and mercy forgive us;
Renew us in mind, heart and spirit.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
           Amen.

                            7
10. With humble heart (from World Council of Churches)

Reader: If we have worshipped You
As a relic from the past,
A theological concept, a religious novelty,
But not as a living God,
All : Lord, forgive us.
        (or sing refrain: kyrie eleison)

Reader: If we have confused Your will
         With our understanding of it;
If we have preferred divergence to unity,
All : Lord, forgive us.

Reader : If we have shared stories of struggle
         With no intention of sharing
         The burden of pain,
All : Lord, forgive us.

Reader : If we have identified the abuse of power,
But failed to prophesy against it,
And refused to empower the weak,
All : Lord, forgive us.

Reader : The Lord says:
         “I will bring my people back to me;
I will love them with all my heart.
No longer am I angry with them.
I will be to them like rain in a dry land.
This is the promise of God.
All : Thanks be to God.

All: To live together in unity.

                           8
Leader: Love and faith come together,
All: Justice and peace join hands.
Leader: If the Lord’s disciples keep silent
All: These stones would shout aloud.

           Amen.

12. A call to worship (2)

L: Lord, we come before you, not alone,
But in the company of one another.
All: We share our happiness with each other -
     And it becomes greater.
L: We share our troubles with each other –
     And they become smaller.
All: We share one another‟s grieves and burdens
And their weight becomes possible to bear.
L: May we never be too mean to give,
     Or too proud to receive.
All: For in giving and receiving
We learn to love and be loved.
We encounter the meaning of life,
     The mystery of existence
     And discover you.

13. Prayer of forgiveness

L: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
     The love of God
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
     Be with you all.
All: And also with you.
L: In order to prepare ourselves
     For this holy Service,
     Let us call to mind
That we have sinned against God and each other.
All: Most merciful God,

                            9
We confess that we have sinned against You,
     In thought, word and deed,
     By what we have done
And by what we have left undone.
     We have not loved You with our whole heart;
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
For the sake of Your son, Jesus Christ,
     Have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew and lead us,
So that we may live Your life, walk Your ways,
And give glory to Your holy name.
L: The almighty and loving God
Gave Jesus Christ to die for us on the cross
And for the sake of Christ
     Forgives us all our sins.
     I therefore declare to you
     The forgiveness of your sins,
In the name of the Father,
     And of the Son
     And of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

14. Concern for human rights

L.: Our Lord Jesus Christ said:
     If you love Me, keep My commandments;
     Happy are those
Who hear the word of God and keep it.
     Hear then these commandments,
Which God has given and take them to heart.
     I am the Lord your God;
You shall have no other gods but Me.
You shall love the Lord your God
With all your heart, with all your soul,
With all your mind and with all your strength.
All: Amen. Lord have mercy.
L: You shall not make for yourself any idol.
God is spirit and those who worship God
Must worship in spirit and truth.

All: Amen. Lord have mercy.

The name of the Lord your God.

All: Amen. Lord have mercy.

Christ is risen from the dead:
Set your minds on things that are above,
Not on things that are on the earth.
All: Amen. Lord have mercy.
L.: Honor your father and your mother.
Live as servants of God; honor everyone.
     Love the people of God.
All: Amen. Lord have mercy.
L.: You shall not commit murder.
     Be reconciled to your neighbor,
     Overcome evil with good.
All: Amen. Lord have mercy.

     Know that your body
Is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

It is more blessed to give than to receive.

For love is the fulfilling of the law.
All: Amen. Lord have mercy.

       Renew us here.

                            12
                     PRAYERS

1. Before a reading from Scripture

O God of knowledge and wisdom,
You reveal all things that are hidden
And You give the Word and His power
To all those who preach the gospel.
O God, lover of humankind,
We ask You graciously to grant us and to all
Your people, minds free from distractions,
So that we may learn and appreciate
Your holy teaching.
Just as Jesus Christ was made in Your likeness,
May we be made like Him
In deed and firmness of doctrine,
So that we may praise Your holy name.
You are the one to whom we offer praise,
glory and worship, the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.
                               (from the Coptic Liturgy)

2. After a reading from Scripture

O God, You have spoken to us
Your divine and saving words.
Illuminate our souls,
To comprehend that which has been read;
That we do not appear
Simply as hearers of Your spiritual words,
But doers of good deeds, true pursuers of faith,
Having a blameless life
And a conduct without reproach in Christ our Lord,
With whom You are blessed and glorified,
Together with Your all-holy and good,
And life-giving Spirit,
Now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen

                          13
3. Praise the living God for His word

We praise the living God and Him do we adore,
Who is outside the bounds of space and time.
Unique is He and none like Him can ever be
Beyond all limitations men define.
Before He had begun creation of our world,
He was the first,
With no beginning of His own.
And to the world He speaks,
And freely gives His word through prophets
That He chooses to proclaim His will.
Another man like Moses, Israel has not known,
A prophet who to God could be so close.
God gave His people truth
By which to lead their life,
Taught by the faithful prophet of His house.
His word was with Him
Before the beginning of times,
His word became flesh and dwelt among us.
We praise and thank you, Lord our God,
For the Spirit which enlightens our minds.
Amen.

4. Unity in God’s word

L O God, good beyond all that is good,
Fair beyond all that is fair,
In whom is calmness, peace and concord.
All Overcome the dissension which divides us;
Bring us back into a unity of love,
    Which may bear some likeness
    To Your divine nature.
L As You are above all things,
Make us one by the unanimity of a good mind,
That through the embrace of charity,
    And the bonds of affection,
    We may be spiritually one,
As well in ourselves as in each other.

                         14
All Through that peace of Yours,
    Which makes all things peaceful,
Through the grace, mercy and tenderness
Of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

5. In need of God’s word

L :Because the world is beautiful
And beauty is a tender thing,
And we are stewards of your creation,
    We need You, God.
All: We need You, God.
L :Because human knowledge seems endless,
And we do not know what we do not know,
    We need You, God.
All: We need you, God.
L :Because we can live without You,
And are free to go against you,
And could worship our wisdom alone,
    We need You, God.
All: We need You, God.
L :Because You came among us, and sat beside us,
And heard us speak and saw us ignore You,
And healed our pain and let us wound You,
And loved us to the end,
And triumphed over all our hatred,
    We need You, God.
All: We need You, God.

6. Calling on God

L : O God, help us to be patient
     Towards all that is unsolved
In our hearts and in our world.
All: How long shall we cry for help,
     And You will not hear?
L : Enable us to accept
     The questions that confound us.

                           15
All: Why do You give approval to oppression?
Why do You allow discord to flourish?
L : Give us wisdom, so that we do not seek
     Answers that cannot be given.
All: The wicked surround the righteous;
     Justice goes forth perverted.
L : Give us courage to wrestle
With such questions in all their perplexity.
All: We will take our stand to watch,
And station ourselves on the tower,
And look forth to see what you will say to us.
L : Help us to live everything
And help us to live it now.
All: For still the vision awaits its time;
It hastens to the end and it will not lie.
L : Grant that we may continue to live
In such a manner that we live our way
     Into the ultimate answer.
All: The vision will surely come, it will not delay.
The righteous shall live by faith.

(whoever likes to share a prayer, can do so).

L.: O God, by the power of Your Holy Spirit
    Set our hearts on fire
    With a new love for Christ;
That we may work with others
    To shape the world more clearly to His will;
That we may labor and long for the unity
    For which He prayed;
That we may be stirred to pray and work
For the coming of your Kingdom,
And that it may be acknowledged with joy
To the ends of the earth.
We ask this in His name.
All: Amen

8. Renewal through the Holy Spirit:

L: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
Send the wind and flame of Your transforming life
To lift up the church in this day.
   Give wisdom and faith
That we may know the great hope
   To which we are called.
All: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
L: Spirit of truth, set us free
To emerge as children of God.
   Open our ears,
That we may hear the weeping of the world.
   Open our mouths,
That we may be a voice for the voiceless.

                           17
   Open our eyes,
That we may see Your vision of peace and justice.
Make us alive with the courage of faith
   Of Your prophetic truth.
All: Come Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
L: Giver of life, sustain Your creation.
   Confront us
With our greedy consuming of Your gifts.
Stand before us as we pillage and destroy.
Call us forth into new harmonies of care
For all that lives and breathes
   And has its being.
All: Come. Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
L: Spirit of unity, reconcile Your people.
   Give us wisdom
To hold on to what we need to be Your church.
Give us the grace to lay down those things,
   That we can do without.
   Give us a vision
Of Your breath and length and height,
Which will challenge our smallness of heart
   And bring us humbly together.
All: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
L: Holy Spirit, transform and sanctify us
As we take up this task in your name.
Give us the gifts we need to be Your church,
   In spirit and in truth.
All: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the whole creation.
L: May you live in this renewal
   Through the Holy Spirit.

Prayer of a young Ghanaian Christian

On Your last days on earth, Lord Jesus,
You promised to leave us the Holy Spirit
As our present Comforter.
We also know that Your Holy Spirit
Blows over this earth,
But often we do not understand Him.

                         18
Many think He is only wind or a feeling.
Let Your Holy Spirit break into our lives.
Let Him come like blood into our veins,
So that we will be driven entirely by Your will.

Let your Spirit
Blow over wealthy Europe and America,
So that people will become humble.
Let Him blow over the poor parts of the world,
So that people need suffer no more.
Let Him blow over Africa,
So that people may understand what true freedom is.

There are a thousand voices and spirits
In this world,
But we want to hear only Your voice,
And be open only to Your Spirit.
Change our directions, make us walk Your way,
The way which has been walked by Your son Jesus,
Who has promised us His Spirit to remain with us,
Today and all the days of our lives,
For ever and ever. Amen.

10. A prayer of dedication of ourselves

Lord of mystery,
Let us feel Your presence at the very heart of life
And seek and find You
In the depths of everyday things.
We pray, O Lord,
In times of weariness and discouragement.
Continue to nudge people along
In the ways of justice and peace.
Lord God, gracious and merciful,
You anointed Your beloved Son with the Holy Spirit
At His baptism in the Jordan.
You consecrated Him: Prophet, Priest and King:
Pour out Your Holy Spirit on us today,

                         19
That we may be faithful to our baptismal calling,
Ardently desire the communion
Of Christ's body and blood
And serve the poor and all who need Your love,
Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord,
Who lives and reigns with You
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
Ever one God, world without end. Amen.

12. A Prayer for Sudan

Reader: Father of our Lord in Heaven,
Visit us for we are worried in our hearts.
        Lord, try to visit us all;
The hardships of this world are upon us.
        The sin of the world
Has cut us away from your justice.
We are left alone; we are left alone.
All : O Lord Jesus Christ,
Who as a boy lived with His parents
By the banks of the Nile,
Have compassion on all the refugees
        In and outside Sudan,
        The land of the Nile.
Help and encourage all those who work
        To relieve their distress;
We ask this for Your name's sake.
Reader: O God, our Creator, our Redeemer,
        Sustain the people of Sudan,
Give food to those who hunger,
        Strength to those who suffer
And peace and security to all.
All: God, bless Sudan; guide her rulers,
        Guard her peoples,
        Grant her peace,
        Based on justice and freedom.
        Help the churches
To be again means of reconciliation,
And bless all who truly are peace-makers.

13. A litany of hope

Let us offer our praise and our lives
         To the Lord.
Men : God of the patriarchs.
Women : God of the matriarchs.
All : In line with all Your faithful people

                         21
            In every age,
We offer again ourselves and our gifts
For the service of Your kingdom.
Women : God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
Men : God of Sarah, Rebecca and Rachel,
All : Grant us the courage
            To cling to Your promise,
Even if the world seems hostile
And our own hearts judge us failures.
Men : God of Priscilla and Aquila,
Women : God of Moses and Miriam,
All : May we too labor in harmony
            To bring our people
            Out of bondage and darkness.
Women : O God of Deborah, a mother in Israel,
            Greatest of Israel's judges.
Men : O God of Salomon, the wisest of kings,
All : May our lives be mirrors of your justice,
Living in the wisdom of unswerving faith.
Women : Great God of Lydia, seller of purple,
Men : Master of Paul, a maker of tents,
All : Guide us in our world,
            Unafraid to lend
Our hands as well as our voices
            To your service
            And eager to involve ourselves
            With all your children.
Men : And for the lives of all righteous women,
Women : For past and present men of faith,
All : For the ministries taking form within us,
And for all the callings yet to be:

14. For the faithful departed

Remember, Lord, our fathers and mothers,
Our sisters and brothers,
Who have fallen asleep
In the hope of the resurrection to eternal life;

                            22
And all those who ended this life
In piety and faith.

Pardon their sins and shortcomings,
Committed in word, deed or thought.
Bestow on them and on us Your kingdom.
Grant them participation
In Your everlasting blessings
And the enjoyment of your endless life.

For You are the life,
The resurrection and the peace
Of Your departed servant, Jesus Christ;
And to You we give glory,
Together with Your life-giving Spirit,
Now and forever, and to the ages of ages.
Amen.
(St. Basil the Great, 4th century)

15. Prayer for commitment

L: The cross
All: We shall take it;
L: The bread,
All: We shall break it;
L: The pain,
All: We shall bear it;
L: The joy,
All: We shall share it;
L: The Gospel,
All: We shall live it;
L: The love,
All: We shall give it;
L: The light,
All: We shall cherish it;
L: The darkness,
All: God shall perish it.

                            23
16. Prayer of renewal

You asked for our hands
That You might use them for your purpose.
We give them for a moment then withdrew them,
For the work was hard.

You asked for our mouths
To speak out against injustice
We gave You a whisper that we might not be accused.

You asked for our eyes,
To see the pain of poverty
We closed them for we did not want to see.

You asked for our lives,
That You might work through us.
We gave a small part,
That we might not be too involved.

Lord, forgive our calculated efforts to serve You
Only when it is convenient for us to do so,
Only in the places where it is safe to do so,
And only with those who make it easy to do so.

Father, renew us, send us out as usable instruments
That we might take seriously
The meaning of Your cross

                            (Joe Seramane, South Africa)

17. Intercultural prayer

Rainbow God,
You have created people of many different colors,
And given us different cultures.
But in You,
Each has its source and fulfillment.
In Jesus Christ
You have made us one,

                           24
Breaking down the walls
Which we make to protect ourselves.
By Your Holy Spirit You have joined us in one body,
Giving to each part its special gift.
We pray that in the church and in the world,
We may experience, more and more,
The love of Your Holy Spirit,
A love which honors and respects each one,
Which is sensitive to our hurts and hopes,
Which values the gifts we bring,
And shares its own treasures with us.
And, to You, O God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Be all honor and glory,
Now and to ages of ages.
                         (Australian Aboriginal prayer)

18. Life in the spirit

Loving God, open our hearts,
So that we may feel
The breath and play of your Spirit.
Unclench our hands,
So that we may reach out to one another,
And touch and be healed.
Open our lips,
That we may drink in the delight and wonder of life.
Open our eyes,
So that we may see Christ in friend and stranger.
Breathe Your Spirit into us,
And touch our lives with the life of Christ
                              From Aotearoa (New Zealand)

19. A new tomorrow

Don’t hide, don’t run,
But rather discover in the midst of fragmentation
A new way forward:
A different kind of journey,

                         25
Marked by its fragility,
Uncertainty and lack of definition.
And on that path to hold these hands,
That even in their brokenness
We create a new tomorrow:
To dance at the margins,
And to see the face of Christ,
Where hurt is real and pain a way of life;
To be touched in the eye of the storm,
Aware that tomorrow may not bring peace.
Impossible, you say:
Let me retreat and find my rest.
What rest, my friend, in these fragmented times?
Unless You lead us, Lord,
The road we journey is all too hard.
Through trust in You alone can we go on

        And for humanity in particular.
        We believe that human sin

And made the coming of a Saviour necessary.
All: This Saviour, the one and only,

        Was accomplished in Jesus Christ

9. The liberator (China)

We believe in Jesus Christ,
Our savior and liberator,

                           32
The expression of God’s redeeming
And restoring love;
The mark of being human,
Source of courage, power and love;
God of god, Light of light,
Ground of our humanity.

We believe that God resides in slums,
Lives in broken homes and hearts,
Suffers our loneliness, rejection and powerlessness.
But through death and resurrection
God gives life, pride and dignity;
Provides the content of our vision,
Offers the context of our struggle,
Promises liberation
To the oppressor and the oppressed,
Hope to those in despair, vision to the blind.

We believe in the activity of the Holy Spirit,
Who revives our tired souls,
Resurrects our defeated spirits,
Renews our hope of wholeness,
And reminds us of our responsibility
For ushering in God’s new order, here and now. Amen.

Who are turned towards the truth.
We believe in the community of faith,

To be at the service of all people.

                         33
L1: We do not believe
In the right of the strongest,
Nor in the force of arms,
Nor in the power of oppression.
L2: We believe in human rights,
In the solidarity of all people,
        In the power of non-violence.
L1: We do not believe in racism,
        In the power that comes
        From wealth and privilege,
Nor in any established order that enslaves.
L2: We believe
That all men and women are equally human,
That order, based on violence and injustice,
        Is no order.
L1: We do not believe
That war and hunger are inevitable
        And that peace is unattainable.
L2: We believe in beauty and simplicity,
        In love with open hands,
        In peace on earth.
All: We do not believe
That suffering is always in vain,
        That death is the end,
That the disfigurement of our world
        Is what God intended.
But we dare to believe always,
        And in spite of everything,
In God‟s power to transform and to change,
        Fulfilling His promise
Of a new heaven and a new earth,
Where justice and peace will flourish. Amen.

11. We have heard about you (Iona-community)

L : We have heard about you, God of all power.

        Creating order out of confusion.

                           34
You have made each one of us in your own
image; Your fingerprint is on every soul.
       So we praise You.
All: We praise and worship You.
L : We have heard about You, Jesus Christ:
       The carpenter who left tools and trade;
       The poor man who made others rich;
       The healer who let himself be wounded;
The criminal on whom soldiers spat,
Not knowing they were fouling the face of God,
The savior who died and rose again.
       So we praise You.
All: We praise and worship You.
L : We have heard about You, Holy Spirit.
You broke the bonds of every race and nation,
       To let God speak in every tongue;
       You made disciples drunk with grace;
       You converted souls and emptied pockets;
You showed how love made all things new
And opened the doors to change and freedom.
       So we praise You.
All: We praise and worship You. Amen.

12. I believe (Australia)

I believe in our responsibility for creation,
The trust of every forest, of every harbor,
Of every plain, of every plan
To build a future as Adams and Eves of today.

I believe in our hope for a great human family,
  As Christ wishes it;
  In hopes fostered by memories
And banishing from the land of the Holy Spirit
  The stupor of despair.
  I believe in myself,
In mobility that God bestowed on me
To experience the greatest of all joys,
To give myself on the road to Emmaus and Jericho.

                          35
13. Goodness is stronger (South Africa)

We are part of this creation
And that we share in a special way
In the creative power of God.
Men: We believe that the resources of our lands,
Water and air are precious gifts from our
      Creator,
To be used and looked after with loving care.
Women: We believe that there is a rhythm
       To God's creation, like a drum-beat;
       When we lose the beat,
The music is out of tune.
Men: We believe
That in order to be good stewards of creation,
       We have the responsibility
To seek information on important concerns
Of our people and our region,
And to share information in our communities.
Women: We believe
That like flowers we can bloom fully,
Only when we are planted in God's love.
Men: We believe that we have the right and the duty
To give glory to the Creator
      By developing our full potential
For the serving of our communities.
Women: We believe that we are called to work,
Not in isolation, but in community,

                         36
Linked with others in our local situation,
In our region and also internationally.
Men: We believe that we can rely
On the strength and support of each other,
To build on the common concerns we share,
       To go beyond the boundaries
       Which separate and divide us;
       United we stand.
Women: We believe that as Christians
We are called to be peace-makers,
In the true peace which God promises us.
Men: We believe that our own cultural ways
       Are also a gift from God;
       We are invited
To use the values of our culture,
To build societies of justice and peace.
Women: We express these beliefs,
Reminded of the love of God,
       The grace of Christ
And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

15. A creed from Germany

Women: I do not believe in the right of the
strongest, in the language of weapons,
In the power of the mighty.
Men: I rather believe in the right of humanity,
In the open hand,
In the power of non-violence,
All: - Because God wants us to live by love.

Women: I do not believe in the superiority of one
race, in riches and privileges.
Men: I rather believe
That all human beings are equally human,
That order based on violence is no order.
All: - Because God wants us to live by love.

Women: I do not believe that I am unaffected
By what happens far away.

                           37
Men: I rather believe that the whole world
Is our home and the field which we cultivate,
And that all may harvest what all have sown.
All: - Because God wants us to live by love.

Women: I do not believe
That I can fight oppression somewhere else
And tolerate injustice here.
Men: I rather believe
That there is only one righteousness,
Here and elsewhere, and that I am not free
As long as there is one oppressed person.
All: - Because God wants us to live by love.

Women: I do not believe
That war and hunger are inevitable
And that peace is unattainable.
Men: I rather believe in the meaning of small
actions,of simple gestures of love, of peace on
earth.
All: - Because God wants us to live by love.

Women: I do not believe
That all efforts are in vain,
That failure and death mean the end.
All: We do believe, in spite of all,
In God's dream of a new heaven and a new earth,
Where love and justice reign. Amen.

16. Statement of faith (Tiananmen Square, 1989)

Democracy is the most noble feeling
In human existence
And freedom is a God given human right
For all people.
Surely it is not something
For the Chinese people to be proud of –
That we must lose our young lives
To gain these things?

                         38
We are not pleased
To go on hunger strike for these demands,
Yet we have no alternative.
We are ready to fight to the death
For the sake of the living.
But we are still children, we are still children!

Mothers of China,
Please take a look at your sons and daughters:
Surely you cannot remain indifferent
When our young lives are cruelly threatened,
When death is approaching.
We do not want to die,
We certainly want to lead a good life,
Since we are in the flower of our youth.
We do not want to die;
We want to study well.

The country is so poor,
We certainly do not want to die
And leave the country in this state.

But if the death of one person, or of a few people,
Can make others live better,
Can make the country glorious and prosperous,
Then we have no right
To prolong an ignoble existence.

17. Professing the unity of Christians

All: We believe
That in the encounter with Christians
     Of other traditions
     We have nothing to fear.
     When we meet
In a spirit of humility and openness
     We discover that:
     We have much in common,

                         39
     We have riches to receive
     We have gifts to share
And that we need one another.
     We believe
     That our divisions are contrary
     To Sacred Scripture.
We rejoice that the Holy Spirit
Is drawing us together in love to reveal,
Through the unity of the body of Christ,
     The new community,
     Which is God‟s will
For all people and creation. Amen.

18. An affirmation of faith (Iona Community)

All: We believe in Jesus Christ,
     Son of the one God,
Maker and sustainer of earth, sea and sky.
     Born of Mary‟s womb,
Faithful to the God of Abraham and Sarah,
     Jesus healed the sick,
     Served the poor,
     And proclaimed heaven on earth.
     Condemned by the religious,
     Crucified by the state,
     He died
     But transformed even death
And rose to the life everlasting.
He blessed the disciples with His holy spirit
     And sent them forth,
East and west, north and south.
     We commit ourselves to Jesus,
To one another as brothers and sisters
And to His mission in the world
In the grace of the Holy Spirit.
     Amen

            EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS
              (TABLE PRAYERS)

1. Eucharistic prayer (traditional)

Minister: We come to You, Father,
            With praise and thanksgiving,
            Through Jesus Christ your Son.
            Through Him we ask You
            Accept and bless
These gifts of bread and wine.
            We offer them for Your holy church;
            Watch over it, Lord, and guide it;
            Grant it peace and unity
            Throughout the world.
            We offer these gifts
For the leaders of the church
And for all who hold and teach the faith
That comes to us from the apostles.
Reader 1: Remember, Lord, Your people
Especially those for whom we now pray....
(short silence or we can mention the
names of people we want to pray for).
            Remember all of us
            Gathered here before You.
You know how firmly we believe in You
            And dedicate ourselves to You.
We offer You this sacrifice of praise
            For ourselves
And those who are dear to us.
We pray to You, our living and true God,
            For our well-being and redemption.
Reader 2: In union with the whole church
We honor Mary the mother of Jesus Christ.
            We honor Joseph, her husband,
We honor the apostles and martyrs
            And all the saints.

                           41
May their merits and prayers gain us
            Your constant help and protection.
All: Father, accept this offering
            From Your whole family.
Grant us Your peace in this life.
            Save us from final damnation
And count us among those You have chosen.
            Bless and approve our offering.
            Make it acceptable to You,
An offering in spirit and in truth.
            Let it become for us
The body and blood of Jesus Christ,
            Your only Son, our Lord.
Minister: The day before Jesus suffered,
He took bread in His hands
And looking up to heaven, to You,
            His almighty Father,
He gave You thanks and praise.
            He broke the bread
And gave it to His disciples and said:
            Take this, all of you, and eat it;
            This is My body
Which will be given up for you.
When supper was ended, He took the cup.
            Again He gave You thanks and praise;
Gave the cup to His disciples and said:
            Take this, all of you, and drink from it;
This is the cup of my blood,
            The blood of the new
            And everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all,
So that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of Me.
Minister: Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:
All: Christ has died, Christ is risen,
            Christ will come again.
Minister: Father, we celebrate
The memory of Christ, your Son.
We, Your people and Your minister,
            Recall His passion,

                          42
            His resurrection from the dead,
            And His ascension into glory;
            And from the many gifts
            You have given us,
            We offer to You,
            God of glory and majesty,
            This holy and perfect sacrifice:
            The bread of life
And the cup of eternal salvation.
Look with favor on these offerings
            And accept them
            As once You accepted
The gifts of your servant Abel,
            And the bread and wine,
            Offered by your priest Melchisedech.
Reader 3: Remember, Lord,
            Those who have died
            And have gone before us
Marked with the sign of faith,
Especially those for whom we now pray....
(short silence or we can mention names
of people who have died …)
May these and all who sleep in Christ,
            Find in your presence
            Light, happiness and peace.
Reader 4: For ourselves too we ask some share
In the fellowship of Your apostles,
            Martyrs and all the saints.
            Though we are sinners
We trust in Your mercy and love.
Do not consider what we truly deserve,
            But grant us Your forgiveness.
            Through Christ our Lord
You give us all these gifts.
You fill them with life and goodness,
You bless them and make them holy.
All: Through Him, with Him, in Him,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is yours,
Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

                           43
2. Eucharistic prayer (West Africa)

Minister:
You are truly blessed and truly holy,
Heavenly Father
Who out of Your tender love towards mankind,
Gave your only Son Jesus Christ
To take our nature upon Him
And to suffer death upon the cross
For our redemption.
By that one offering of Himself
He made a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice
For the sins of the whole world.
He commanded us to commemorate His precious death
Perpetually until His coming again.

On the night He was betrayed,
He took bread, broke it
And gave it to His disciples, saying:
Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of Me.
Again, after supper, He took the cup,
And when He had given You thanks,
He gave it to them, saying:
Drink this, all of you; for this is My blood
Of the new Law, the new Covenant,
Which is shed for you and for many,
For the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as You drink it,
In remembrance of Me.

All:   Your death, Lord, we commemorate;
       Your resurrection we confess;
       Your second coming we await.
       Praise to You, O Christ.

Minister:
Lord, God of our fathers, God of Abraham and Sara,
Isaac and Rebecca, of Jacob and prophets,
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ:

                         44
Open our eyes to see
Your hand at work in the world around us.
Deliver us from the presumption
Of coming to this table for solace only,
And not for strength;
For pardon only, and not for renewal.
Let the grace of the Holy Communion
Make us one body, one spirit in Christ,
That we may worthily serve the world in His name.

All: Risen Lord,
Be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.
Accept these prayers and praises, Father,
Through Jesus Christ our great High Priest,
To whom, with You and the Holy Spirit,
Your Church gives honor, glory and worship,
       From generation to generation. Amen.

3. Eucharistic prayer (East Africa)

Min.: God, Father of our ancestors,
      Friend in our midst,
      Your children come unto You.
All: Here is Your food. Here is Your drink.
These things are Yours before they are ours.
Now we are making a feast,
      It is a thanksgiving:
We are thanking You, our God.
Min.: O God, we and our ancestors,
The fathers and mothers of our people,
Thank you and rejoice in you.
This food: We shall eat it in your honor.
This drink: We shall drink it in your honor.
We thank you for giving us life.
All: We thank you.
Min.: We thank you for giving us freedom.
All: We thank you.

                         45
Min.: We thank you for giving us peace.
All: We thank you.
Min.: We thank you for Him
Who bears the punishment that is our due.
All: We thank you.
Min.: Father, send the spirit of life,
The spirit of power and fruitfulness.
With His breath, speak Your word
      Into this food and drink.
      Make them the living body
And the life-blood of Jesus, our brother.
      Give us,
Who eat and drink in Your presence,
      Life and power,
And fruitfulness of heart and body.
Give us true brotherhood with Your son.
On the night of His suffering,
Jesus gave thanks for the bread
Which He held in His hands.
This bread He shared with His followers,
      saying:
All of you, take this, eat this,
This is My body, to be handed over to you.
Then He shared the cup with them, saying:
All of you, take this, drink this,
      It is My blood,
The blood of the pact of brotherhood,
Which begins now and lasts forever.
This blood will be poured out for you
      And for all people,
So that sins may be forgiven.
All: Lord, You are the resurrection and life.
      You, the crucifixion, are here.
      You, the resurrection, are here.
You, the spirit and medicine of life,
      Are here.
Min.: Father, give us kinship
With all Your people, with the elders,
The fathers and mothers of Your people,
With the leaders and pastors of our churches,

                         46
With the living and the dead,
       With children unborn,
       In Jesus who was anointed
       With the medicine of life.
       And You, our prayer,
Prayer of the long and distance past,
You, ancient word, spoken by the Father,
You, whose breath is the spirit,
       Prayer of the ancestors,
       You are spoken now!
All: Amen.

4. Eucharistic prayer (Jesus the Pilgrim)

Min.: Guide of all Your pilgrims,
We gather together to praise and bless You.
Your name is the “Faithful One",
      And Your love is everlasting.
We have come to experience Your love
In many ways as life’s pilgrims.
All: We thank You for the Spirit
      You breathe into us, a wandering Spirit;
We thank You for eyes that guide us,
For feet that tread the paths,
      For the necessary signposts
When we have lost our way.
Min.: We thank You for Your love,
Which gives our journey meaning and direction.
You bless us with Your divine restlessness.
You prod us from our complacency.
You urge us down the roads
When we do not feel strong enough to travel.
All: You support us with fellow travelers,
Who bolster us when we despair,
Who refresh and who renew us
When we think that we cannot go any further.

Min.: For all those pilgrims who have gone before us
And pointed the way to you:

                           47
For Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam,
For David, Ruth, Esther, Solomon and Isaiah
      We give You thanks, God.
But most of all we thank You
For Your greatest pilgrim, Jesus Christ.
All: He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
      He lights our path.
He opens our eyes to you.
He does not abandon us in our need.
Min.: His journey led Him to Jerusalem.
There He strengthened us with a meal
      To follow in His footsteps.
On the night before He died,
Jesus took bread and blessed it.
He gave it to His friends with these words:
Take this, all of you and eat it.
This is My body given up for you.
      Later He took a cup of wine;
He blessed it and gave the cup to His friends
      With these words:
      Take this and share it:
This is the cup of My blood,
      The new and everlasting covenant.
It is shed for you and for all people,
So that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of Me.
And so Father, we thank You
For the words and the example
      Of Your pilgrim Jesus.
Let us proclaim then the mystery of our faith.
All: By His life He teaches us to believe
In You and in life‟s journey.
By His death He shows us
The meaning of hope when we are at a loss.
By His resurrection He proclaims Your love,
Which refreshes us when we are weary.
Min.: Father, send us your Spirit,
      So that we, Your pilgrims,
Can have light for our eyes,
      Strength for our limbs

                         48
And companionship on a lonely journey.
May we appreciate the gifts You have given us.
      Teach us to use them
      As we struggle
With the mystery of Your presence
In us and in our world.
All: May we seek You, meet You and know You
As we travel along life‟s journey.
All this we ask You through Jesus Christ,
Who is our way to You.
Through Him, with Him, in Him,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
All glory and honor is Yours, almighty Father,
     For ever and ever. Amen.

5. Eucharistic prayer for students

Min.: Today, during our busy students' schedule,
      We come to You, Father,
      With praise and thanksgiving.
Through Jesus Christ we ask You
To accept and bless these gifts of bread and
Wine. We offer them for Your Church
      Throughout the world.
      Watch over this world, Lord, and guide it;
      Grant it peace and unity.
      Remember, Lord, Your people,
Especially those for whom we now pray…(silence)
All: Remember all of us gathered here before You.
You know how firmly we believe in You
      And dedicate ourselves to You.
Through our studies we accept the mission
By which we become tools in Your hand.
We now dedicate ourselves to you.
We pray to you for our well-being and
      Redemption.
We also pray for our college and university
And all those who study here,
      Now and in the future.

                          49
Min.: Father, accept this offering
      From Your whole family.
Grant us Your peace in this life.
      Bless and approve our offering;
      Make it acceptable to You,
An offering in spirit and in truth.
Let it become for us the body and blood
Of Jesus Christ, Your only son, our Lord.
      The day before He suffered
He took bread in his hands
      And looking up to heaven,
      To You, His almighty Father,
He gave You thanks and praise.
      He broke the bread,
Gave it to His disciples and said:
      Take this, all of you, and eat it;
      This is My body,
Which will be given up for you.
When supper was ended, He took the cup.
      Again He gave You thanks and praise;
Gave the cup to His disciples and said:
Take this, all of you and drink from it.
This is the cup of My blood,
The blood of the new and everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all people,
So that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of Me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:
All: Christ has died, Christ is risen;
      Christ will come again.

All: Almighty God, we pray
That Your angel may take this sacrifice
      To Your altar in heaven.
Then, as we receive from this altar
The sacred body and blood of Your son,
      Let us be filled
      With every grace and blessing.
Min.: Remember, Lord, those who have died

                         50
And have gone before us with the sign of
Faith, especially those for whom we now pray.
      (short silence…).
May these and all who sleep in Christ,
      Find in Your presence light,
      Happiness and peace.
All: For ourselves too
We ask some share in the fellowship
Of Your apostles and all the saints.
      But above all,
      Give us a share in Your Holy Spirit;
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of beauty, love and truth.
Min.: Through Christ our Lord,
You give us all these gifts.
You fill them with life and goodness.
You bless them and make them holy.

6. God visits us and brings us peace

Min.: We thank You, God our Father,
For showing us the way to peace -
Peace with our fellow human beings:
Charity that knows how to forgive,
That teaches us to share our bread
      With one another,
By which children are ignorant of hate,
And may hope to find happiness on earth.
We thank You, O God, for Your trust in people
Through the good which is present in all.
All: We thank You for Jesus Christ
Whom we may call by His own name.
      He belongs to You, Father,
As much as He belongs to us.
More than anyone before or after Him,
He spent Himself to further Your kingdom.
His message rings out for ever:
      Peace on earth.
Meekness was His strength; harshly dealt with,

                          51
      He bore it humbly;
Being the least of all, He became our leader.

Min: He taught us to share what we hold most
     precious:
On the eve before His passion,
      He called together His disciples,
      Said the prayer of thanksgiving,
Broke the bread for them and passed it round,
Saying: Take this, all of you, and eat it:
      This is my body,
Which will be given up for you.
In the same way He took the cup,
Filled with wine. He gave You thanks,
And giving the cup to His disciples, said:
Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
This is the cup of My blood,
The blood of the new and everlasting Law.
It will be shed for you and for all
So that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of Me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:
All: Christ has died, Christ is risen,
      Christ will come again.
Min.: When the Lord Jesus had brought
His work of peace to fulfillment,
You, Father, raised Him up from the dead.
      You gave Him the name,
Which is above all other name.
He is the Son of Man, the First and the Last,
      Our bond of peace.
      Lord God, receive our thanks.
All: Now send His Spirit in our midst:
The Spirit who does not scatter,
But gathers what has been dispersed.
May He bestow on us His gifts:
Faith in the future, confidence in man and
woman, mercy and justice, love and joy.
Let this earth be Your kingdom of peace,

                         52
A place in which all find room to live,
Where children are safe and secure,
       The disabled are helped,
       The sorrowful are consoled,
       The young and the aged
       Are surrounded with care.
Let this be a world where You, O God,
Live among men and women, a God-with-us,
Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.
Through Him, Father, we give You thanks,
Filled with His spirit whose pledge
We carry in our hearts now and forever,
       World without end. Amen.

7. How long must we wait?

Min: Why are You not always here,
      Not everywhere on earth, God,
Like a healing hand, like a liberating word,
Like a light that points to new ways?
Then we would come to life again
      The wilderness would become habitable,
      The desert would bear fruit,
      Rocks would change into springs
      And stone into water.
What is impossible now would become possible.
There would be a city of peace, a new earth.
How long must we still wait for You?
We who are Your people, made by You,
      Led and blessed by You,
      Somewhere between birth and death,
At this moment of our lives,
We remind You that You promised to be faithful
To us forever and ever and that You will never
deny the works of Your hands.
All: We remind You of what You have done
To Your people since the earliest times,
Of what You did to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

                            53
      To Hagar and Ismail,
To Your prophets Moses and Miriam,
      To David Your king.
Min.: Above all, we remind You of what You did
      To Jesus of Nazareth,
Who came to carry out Your will,
Whom You called and who chose
To be a man of God till the very end,
Who accomplished everything and became a
Servant, who is our Lord and master,
Our guide through life, our way and truth.
On the evening before His death,
As a sign of the spirit which filled Him,
He took bread in His hands and broke it
And gave it to His disciples with these words:
Take and eat, this is My body for you,
Do this in memory of Me.
He also took the cup with wine and said:
This is the new covenant in My blood,
That is shed for this world,
      For the forgiveness of sins.
All: Remember Your son, Lord God,
And do to us what You did to him.
Go out and look for us and come to our rescue.
Never take away Your hand from us.
Min.: Open Your heaven above us,
Call our names, send us Your spirit
      And make us Your people,
All: Through Him, with Him and in Him, Your son,
Who lives forever and ever. Amen.

8. The Wisdom of God

Min: O Holy Wisdom of our God,
       Eternally beyond our wisdom
       And compassionate towards our weakness:
We praise You and give You thanks,
Because You emptied Yourself of power
       And entered into our struggle,

                         54
Taking upon You our unprotected flesh.
You opened wide Your arms for us upon the
Cross, becoming a scandal for our sake,
That You might sanctify even the grave
To be a bed of hope to Your people.
Therefore, with those who are detained
Or who are betrayed by friends,
      Whose bodies are violated or in pain;
With those who have died alone,
      Without dignity, comfort or hope,
And with all the company of the saints,
Who have carried You in their wounds,
That they may be bodied forth with life,
      We praise You, saying:
All: Holy, holy, holy, vulnerable God,
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory,
      Hosanna in the highest.
      Blessed is the one
Who comes in the name of God,
      Hosanna in the highest.
Min: Blessed is our brother Jesus,
Bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh,
      Whom the cup of suffering did not pass;
Who, on the night that He was betrayed,
Took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said:
This is My body, which is for you.
      Do this to remember Me.
In the same way also the cup, after supper,
Saying: This cup is the new covenant in My
Blood. Do this, whenever you drink it,
      To remember Me.
All: Christ has died,
      Christ is risen.
      Christ will come again.
Min.: Therefore,
As we eat this bread and drink this cup,
      We are proclaiming Christ’s death
      Until He comes.
In the body broken and the blood poured out,
We restore to memory and hope,

                         55
       The broken and not remembered
       Victims of tyranny and sin;
And we long for the bread of tomorrow,
And the wine of the ages to come.
All: Come then, life-giving spirit of our God,
       Brood over these bodily things,
And make us one body with Christ,
That we, who are baptized into His death,
       May walk in newness of life;
That what is sown in dishonor
       May be raised in glory,
And what is sown in weakness
May be raised in power. Amen.

9. Becoming new people

Min.: We lift up our hearts to You,
      Lord most high, holy God.
All: We thank You, accept our words of praise,
Keep us in Your love and hear our prayers.
Min: You come and deliver us,
You enable Your people to enjoy freedom,
You make the sun rise over good and bad alike.
You have given the earth in our care,
As people standing shoulder to shoulder,
To live in worry and trouble,
In joy and sorrow, but always towards You.
All: Blessed are You, God of the powers
And blessed is He who comes in this world
In your name, Jesus Christ, your Son:
Min.: He is our shepherd until we die,
Our example from day to day,
So that we may do what He did,
So that we may become new people,
Bread and peace for each other.
We thank You for the sake of Him,
Who on the night before He suffered and died,
      Fulfilled everything, became love
And took our bread in His hands,

                           56
Broke it and gave it to His friends
With these words: Take and eat, My body for
You. Do this in memory of Me.
He also took the cup and giving thanks to You,
Said: This is the new covenant in My blood,
Which is shed for all of you,
So that sins may be forgiven.
      Every time you drink it,
You will do it in memory of Me.
All: That is why we have come here,
Called and touched by Your gospel.
      That is, Lord our God,
Why we present this sign of our faith,
Proclaim His death until He comes
And bear witness to His life.
Min.: He was raised up by You,
The first born, the new creation.
Let us now share in His life.
      Send Your Spirit over us,
Sustain us and give us hope,
Make us thirsty for justice and peace.
And let Your church show to the world
That you are a God of the living.
All: Through Jesus Christ, with Him and in Him,
Everywhere on earth, here and now,
      And forever and ever. Amen.

10. God creator

Min.: Blessed are You, Creator God,
Calling forth life from the abyss of
      Nothingness, breathing order and beauty
      Into the chaos of creation.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, in the
      unfolding dream of our universe,
In the range and variety of life,
From the inanimate to the living creatures,
From the vast galaxies to the tiny specks of
       dust.

                         57
In all You do, You call forth new life
And You invite all living beings
To participate in Your creative task.
We acknowledge You as the source
Of all we are and have and we glorify You
With all creation as we say:

All: Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
      Hosanna in the highest.
      Blessed is he
Who comes in the name of the Lord.
      Hosanna in the highest.
Min.: Creator God,
From the beginning of time You call forth
Life, energizing our universe with hope and
      vitality. Down through the ages
      You reveal your creative power
In the changes and transformations of life.
You rose up wise and holy people
      To unravel the hidden mysteries
      Of Your creative love.
And in due course You sent Jesus,
      To embody in our world
The Christian revelation of Your Godhead.
Sharing the faith and vision of Jesus,
We gather here in the power
      Of your life-giving spirit,
To celebrate anew the sacred meal,
      That renews our faith,
And nourishes us for our pilgrim-journey.
All: We invoke the Spirit of God,
      Who gathers us in worship,
To look lovingly upon these gifts of bread and
      Wine and transform them
Into the body and blood of Jesus,
To sustain and nourish us on our way.
Min.: Upon this bread,
Produced from the womb of Mother earth,

                         58
      We invoke God’s transforming power,
As we pronounce our Savior’s words:
Take this, all of you, and eat it:
This is My body, which will be given up for
      you.
      Upon this cup of wine,
Crushed from the grapes of nature,
      We implore God’s special blessing,
As we pronounce the Lord’s own words,
Uttered at the original banquet of salvation:
Take this, all of you, and drink from it:
This is the cup of My blood,
The blood of the new and everlasting covenant.
It will be shed for you and for all,
So that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in memory of Me.
As we celebrate this sacred meal,
Our hearts awaken to the love and energy
      That animates all creation.
We call to mind all that God has done in our
World and we look forward in hope as life
Unfolds, ordered in harmony and rich in
diversity. As we share this sacred food,
      We implore the Holy Spirit
      To transform our inner being,
That we may become deeply attuned
To God’s revelation in our world today.
All: As we share our pilgrim journey,
We unite our thoughts and prayers
With all who seek the truth,
      Within and outside our churches.
Min.: We rejoice in the fellowship of faith,
Which we share with the people of other
Creeds, and we ask the spirit
To guide and enlighten all who lead us
      Towards the fullness of truth.
In union with all people, living and dead,
      We commit ourselves
To the ongoing manifestation of life:
That goodness may triumph over evil,

                         59
That pain and suffering may diminish,
       That justice may prevail.
And may we never cease to work
       Together with our creative God,
Who begets the possible from the impossible,
Life from death, hope from despair,
And the renewal of all creation,
In the eternal plan of God.
All: Through Christ, in Christ, with Christ,
We recall and celebrate God‟s creative love,
Made possible through the power of the Spirit,
One God, living and reigning forever and ever.
       Amen.

11. A short Eucharistic prayer

Min.: The life of Jesus:
Sign of liberation for those living in
Captivity, token of justice to the outcast.
Bread to be shared with the hungry,
      Not boasting of violence:
Source of forgiveness, peace among people.
Community with God, source of His life.
All: His life to inspire us with hope,
To make us search for peace and justice
      Between people and nations
Min.: We are doing now what He did:
In the evening before his suffering and his
Death, He joined at one table with His
Friends; He took the bread, broke it,
Gave it to them and said:
      This is My body which is broken for you;
Do this in memory of Me.
He also took the cup with wine and said:
This is the new Covenant in My blood.
Whenever you drink it, do it in memory of Me.
All: Fill us with His Spirit,
      To live with him,
To share with the poor our welfare,

                         60
To be opposed to war and violence,
      To seek peace,
To become sisters and brothers. Amen

12. Praying with women

Min.: O Eternal Wisdom,
We praise You and give You thanks,
Because the beauty of death could not contain
      You.
      You broke forth from the comfort of the grave;
Before You the stone was moved
And the tomb of our world was opened wide.
For on this day You were raised in power
      And revealed Yourself to women
      As a beloved stranger,
Offering new life in the rituals of death.
Therefore, with the woman who gave You birth,
The woman who befriended and fed You,
Who argued with You and touched You,
The woman who anointed You for death,
The woman who met You, risen from the death,
And with all Your lovers throughout the ages,
      We praise You, saying:
All: Holy, holy, holy, resurrection God,
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
      Hosanna in the highest.
      Blessed is the one
Who comes in the name of God.
      Hosanna in the highest.
Min.: Blessed is our brother Jesus,
Who walks with us the road of our grief,
And is known again in the breaking of the
bread; Who, on the night He was handed over,
Took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said:
This is My body, which is for you.
      Do this to remember Me.
In the same way also the cup,
      After supper, saying:

                         61
This cup is the new Covenant in My blood.
Do this, whenever you drink it,
       to remember Me.
All: Christ has died. Christ is risen.
       Christ will come again.
Come now, disturbing spirit of God,
       Breathe on these bodily things
And make us one body in Christ.
Open our graves, unbind our eyes
       And name us here.
Touch and heal all that has been buried in us,
That we need not cling to our pain,
But may go forth with the power
To release resurrection in the world.

13. The Lima-liturgy

Offering the bread and wine
Min.: Blessed are You,
           Lord God of the universe,
You are the giver of this bread,
Fruit of the earth and of human labour,
Let it become the bread of Life.
All: Blessed be God, now and forever.
Min.: Blessed are You,
           Lord God of the universe,
You are the giver of this wine,
Fruit of the vine and of human labour,
           Let it become the wine
           Of the eternal kingdom.
All: Blessed be God, now and forever.
Min.: As the grain once scattered in the fields
And the grapes once dispersed on the
hillside and now reunited on this table
           In bread and wine,
So, Lord, may Your whole church
           Soon be gathered together
From the corners of the earth
           Into Your kingdom.

                         62
Blessing the bread and wine:
Min.: The Lord be with you
All: And also with you.
Min.: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
Min.: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give God
           Thanks and praise.
Min: Truly it is right and good
           To glorify You,
At all times and in all places,
To offer You our thanksgiving, O Lord,
           Holy Father,
           Almighty and Everlasting God.
           Through Your living word
           You created all things,
           And pronounced them good.
You made human beings in Your own image,
           To share Your life
           And reflect Your glory.
When the time had fully come,
           You gave Christ to us
As the Way, the Truth and the Life.
He accepted baptism as Your servant,
To announce the good news to the poor.
           We give You thanks
Because You lead us to truth
           By the Holy Spirit,
You give us power to proclaim
           The gospel to the nations,
And to serve You as a royal priesthood.
And so with the angels and all the saints
           We proclaim Your glory.

          (Song of praise or:)
All: Holy, holy, holy God of power and might.
Heaven and earth proclaim Your glory.
          Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of
The Lord, Hosanna in the highest.

                         63
Min.: O God, Lord of the universe,
        You are holy
And Your glory is beyond measure.
        We are grateful
That Christ gave to us the Eucharist,
That we should celebrate the memorial
Of the cross and the resurrection
And receive His presence as food.
        May His Spirit accomplish
The words of Your beloved Son,
        Who on the night
In which He was betrayed, took bread,
Broke it, and gave it to His disciples,
Saying: Take, eat: this is My body,
        Which is given for you.
        Do this to remember Me.
After supper, He took the cup
And when He had given thanks,
He gave it to them and said:
        Drink this, all of you,
This is My blood of the new covenant,
Which is shed for you and for many
        For the forgiveness of sins.
        Do this to remember Me.

(A response may be sung, like: come holy
        spirit or all say:)

All: When we eat this bread
        And drink this cup,
We proclaim your death, Lord Jesus
        Until You come in glory.
Min.: Gracious God, we celebrate
        The memorial of our redemption
We recall the birth and life
        Of Your Son amongst us
And His death, resurrection and ascension
In glory. There, as our Great High
Priest, He intercedes for all people
And we look for His coming in glory.

                      64
All: Lord, look down
On these gifts of bread and wine,
Which You gave to Your Church.
Accept them as You once accepted
           The offering of Your son,
Who renewed our covenant with You.
Min.: Upon this Eucharist
           Send Your life-giving Spirit.
May the outpouring of this Spirit of fire
           Transfigure this thanksgiving meal,
So that this bread and wine
           May become for us
The body and blood of Christ.
All: Fill us with the Holy Spirit,
That we may be one body one spirit
           In Christ, a living sacrifice
To the praise of Your glory.
Min.: (or reader 1): Remember loving God,
Your one holy, catholic and apostolic
church, redeemed by the blood of Christ.
Reveal her unity, guard her faith
           And preserve her in peace.
Remember all the servants of Your church,
           Bishops, priests, deacons
And all to whom You have given
           Special gifts of ministry.
Min.: (or reader 2): Remember also
           All our sisters and brothers,
Who have died in the peace of Christ,
           And those
Whose faith is known to You alone…………
           (We remember the dead)
Guide them to the joyful feast
           Prepared for all peoples
           In Your presence,
           With the Blessed Virgin Mary,
           The patriarchs and the prophets,
           The apostles and martyrs,
           And all the saints
For whom Your friendship was life.

                         65
Min.: (or reader 3): With all these holy people
           We sing your praise
And await the happiness of Your kingdom,
           Where with the whole creation,
We shall be enabled to glorify You
           Through Christ our Lord.
All: Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ,
All honor and glory is Yours,
           Almighty Father,
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
           Now and forever. Amen.
(The response “amen” can be sung.)

14. Table prayer (Iona community)

Min. We follow the example of Jesus and His command,
     Like He did,
We too will take this bread and this wine,
The ordinary things of our world
     Like Christ,
We too will make this bread and wine
     Our special food.
Like Him, we too will say a prayer before our
Meal. Let us do so now.
     Gratitude, praise, hearts lifted high,
     Voices full and joyful …
     These You deserve.
All: For when we were nothing,
     You made us something.
When we had no name and no faith and no future,
You called us to be Your children.
When we lost our way or turned away,
     You did not abandon us.
When we came back to You,
Your arms opened wide in welcome.
Min. And look, You prepare a table for us
Offering not just bread, not just wine,
     But Your very self,
So that we may be filled, forgiven, healed,

                         66
     Blessed and made new again.
You are worth all our pain and all our praise
So now, in gratitude, we join our voices
To those of the Church on earth and in heaven:

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord,
     God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
     Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord
     Hosanna in the highest
Min. Lord God,
As we come to share the richness of Your table,
We cannot forget the rawness of the earth.
We cannot take bread and forget who are hungry
     Your world is one world
And we are stewards of its nourishment.
All: Lord, put our prosperity
At the service of the poor
Min. We cannot take wine
And forget those who are thirsty.
     The ground and the rootless,
The earth and its weary people
     Cry out for justice.
All: Lord, put our fullness
At the service of the empty
Min. We cannot hear Your words of peace
And forget the world at war
Or, if not at war, then preparing for it.
All: Show us quickly, Lord,
How to turn weapons into welcome signs
And the lust for power into a desire for peace
Min. We cannot celebrate the feast of Your family
     And forget our divisions.
We are one in spirit, but not in fact.
History and hurt still dismember us.
All: Lord, heal Your church in every brokenness
Min. For us You were born, for us You healed,
     Preached, taught, and showed the way to heaven;
     For us You were crucified,

                         67
And for us, after death, You rose again
Lord Jesus Christ, present with us now,
For all that You have done
And all that You have promised,
     What have we to offer?
All: Our hands are empty
Our hearts are sometimes full of wrong things.
We are not fit to gather up the crumbs
     From under Your table
     But with You is mercy
And the power to change us.
Min. So as we do in this place
What You did in an upstairs room,
Send down Your Holy Spirit on us
And on these gifts of bread and wine
That they may become for us Your body,
     Healing, forgiving and making us whole;
And that we may become, for You,
Your body, loving and caring in the world
     Until Your kingdom comes.
Among friends, gathered round a table,
Jesus took bread, broke it and said,
‘This is My body, it is broken for you’
And later, He took the cup of wine and said,
‘This is the new relationship with God,
Made possible because of My death.
Take this –all of you- to remember Me’.
     And so we pray:
All: Lord Jesus Christ,
     You have put Your life into our hands;
Now we put our lives into Yours.
     Through Your Holy Spirit,
     Renew and remake us
What we have been is past
What we shall be, through You, still awaits us
     Lead us on.
     Take us with You.
     Amen.

             PRAYERS FOR PEACE

1. Healing and peace

All: Lord Jesus Christ, You are the way of peace.
       Come into the brokenness
Of our lives and our land
       With Your healing love.
Help us to be willing to bow before You
       In true repentance
And to bow to one another in real forgiveness.
By the fire of Your Holy Spirit
       Melt our hard hearts
And consume the pride and prejudice
       Which separate us.
Fill us, O Lord, with Your perfect love
       Which casts out fear;
Bind us together in the unity,
Which You share with the Father
       And the Holy Spirit.
L.: May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
All: And also with you.
L.: Let us share with each other a sign of peace.

2. Unity and Peace

All: O Lord our God,
       Creator of heaven and earth,
We thank You and praise You for Your love,
       For Your wisdom,
       For Your kindness and compassion.
Make us instruments of love, peace, unity
       And harmony between people
Of different race, color and creed.
Grant us to respect all of Your creation,

                         71
And to look at one another and at all your
       Creatures as brothers and sisters.
Help us to serve one another
       In humility, simplicity and joy.
       Take away from our hearts
And from the hearts of all people,
The spirit of hatred, violence and rivalry.
So we do pray in the name of Jesus Christ.
L: May the peace of Christ be with you all.
All: And also with you.
L: Let us share with each other a sign of peace.

3. God’s peace

O God, You are the unfathomable abyss of peace,
The ineffable sea of love,
The fountain of blessings
And the bestowal of affection.
You sent peace to those who received it.
Open to us this day the sea of Your love,
And water us with full streams
From the riches of Your grace,
And from the most sweet springs of Your kindness.
Make us children of quietness and heirs of peace;
Enkindle in us the fire of Your love.
Sow in us Your fear,
And strengthen our weakness by Your power.
Bind us closely to You and to each other
In our firm and indissoluble bond of unity.
We pray this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
L.: May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
All: And also with you.
L.: Let us share peace with each other......

4. Prayer for peace

L: Christ who has nourished us is our peace

                         72
Strangers and friends, male and female,
       Old and young.
He has broken down the barriers
To bind us to Him and to each other
All: Having tasted His goodness,
       Let us share His peace.
L: The peace of the Lord be always with you
All: And also with you.
L: Let us share with each other a sign of peace.

5. Prayer for peace and the breaking of the bread

L: Lord Jesus Christ, You told Your apostles:
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.
     Look not on our sins,
But on the faith of Your church.
In order that Your will be done,
Grant us always this peace and guide us
     Towards the perfect unity
     Of Your kingdom forever.
And may the peace of the Lord
     Be with you always.
All: And also with you.
L: Let us give each other
A sign of reconciliation and peace.

A hymn for peace can be sung…

L: The bread, which we break,
Is the communion of the body of Christ.
The cup of blessing for which we give thanks
Is the communion in the blood of Christ.
All: Lamb of God,
You take away the sins of the world,
     Have mercy on us.
L:   See, Christ gives Himself to us;
     We share His life.
Happy are we who are called to this table.
All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive You,

                         73
     But only say the word,
     And I shall be healed.
6. Make me a channel of Your peace,

Make me a channel of Your peace,
  Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love;
Where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord,
And where there's doubt true faith in You.

Make me a channel of Your peace,
  Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope;
Where there is darkness - only light,
And where there's sadness ever joy.

  Make me a channel of Your peace;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all people that we receive,
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Oh Master, grant that I may never seek,
So much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

                           74
                   COMMUNION

6. A prayer for remembrance

Remember, Lord,
The down-coming of the rains
And the waters and the rivers,
And bless them.
Remember, Lord,
The plants and the seeds
And the fruits of the fields of every year;
Bless them and make them abundant.
Remember, Lord,
The safety of Your own holy church
And all the cities and countries.
Remember, Lord,
The safety of humankind and of beast;
Remember also me Your unworthy servant.
Remember, Lord,
Our fathers and mothers,

                         81
Our brothers and sisters
And all those who have fallen asleep
And gone to their rest.

Remember, Lord,
The captives and prisoners
And bring them again in peace to their home place.
Remember, Lord,
Those who are sick,
Those who are distressed.
Remember, Lord,
Your people, the poor who are under oppression;
The unemployed, the addicted,
Those at the fringes of society.
You are with them and share in their lives.
Make us follow You,
Share in Your Spirit of love and peace
And bring us to Your kingdom.

7. A closing prayer

L: In peace let us pray to the Lord.
All: O Lord, our God, we give You thanks
For uniting us by baptism in the body of Christ
And for filling us with joy in this Eucharist.
Lead us towards the full and visible unity
Of Your church and help us to treasure
     All the signs of reconciliation
     You have granted us.
Now that we have tasted of the banquet
You have prepared for us in the world to come,
May we all one day share together
     The inheritance of the saints
In the life of Your heavenly city,
Through Jesus Christ, Your son, our Lord,
Who lives and reigns with You
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
Ever one God, world without end.
     Amen.

And of every malady, pain and fever
To which they are bound;
And if they have sins and transgressions,
Grant to them remission and forgiveness,
Since You love all Your people.
Yes, Lord our God, pity Your creation,
Through the compassion of Your only-begotten Son,
Together with Your all-holy,
Good and life-creating Spirit
With whom You are blessed,
Both now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

2. God of power

May the boldness of Your Spirit transform us,
May the gentleness of Your Spirit lead us,
May the gifts of Your Spirit equip us
To serve and worship You,
Now and always,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

                           83
3. Go with the strength you have

Go simply, lightly, gently, in search of Love,
And the Spirit go with you. Amen.

4. May God Almighty bless you

Blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep lying below,
Blessings of the grain and flowers,
Blessings of the eternal mountains,
Blessings of the everlasting hills;
May these blessings be with you and go with you,
In the name of the Father,
The Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

5. Go in peace,

And may the Holy God surprise you on the way,
May Christ Jesus be your company,
And the Spirit lift up your life. Amen.

6. Eternal God,

Our beginning and our end,
Be our starting point and our heaven,
And accompany us in this day’s journey.
Use our hands to do the work of Your creation
And use our lives to bring others the new life,
Which You give this world in Jesus Christ
And in His holy Spirit. Amen.

7. May almighty God bless you

M: May almighty God bless you,
The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen

12. Farewell blessing (1)

May the road rise to greet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine upon your face,
May the rain fall softly on your fields:
Until we meet again
May you be comfortable
In the palm of God's hand.

                            85
13. Farewell-blessing (2)

Now it’s time to say goodbye
To go on out from here,
To live the visions
And the dreams to scatter hate and fear.
So may the peace be with you now,
A peace that is filled with grace.
May it surround all your struggles
And everything you face.
And may you find your own way
To sing out love’s own song
With courage, tears and laughter
And then pass it on.
Yes, the time has come to say goodbye …
May peace be with you now.

14. Farewell-blessing (Iona community 1)

Leader with those who stay:
  The Maker’s blessing be yours
On your road, on your journey,
  Guiding you, cherishing you

Those who leave:
  The Son’s blessing be yours,
Wine and water, bread and stories,
  Feeding you, challenging you

Leader with those who stay:
  The Spirit’s blessing be yours,
Wind and fire, joy and wisdom,
  Comforting you, disturbing you

Those who leave:
  The Angel’s blessing be yours
On your house, on your living,
  Guiding you, encouraging you

All: God‟s blessing be ours,
  The blessing of pilgrims,
  All the nights and days
  Of our journey home.

                            86
15. Farewell-blessing (Iona community 2)

L: May God who is present in sunrise and nightfall
And in the crossing of the sea,
Guide your feet as you go.

May God, who is with you when you sit
And when you stand, encompass you with love
And lead you by the hand.

May God, who knows your path
And the places where you rest,
Be with you in your waiting,
Be your good news for sharing,
And lead you in the way that is everlasting

All: Amen

16.A blessing after communion

L: Let us pray for the blessing
Of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
   Lord Jesus Christ,
Because You broke bread with the poor,
You were looked upon with contempt.
   Because You broke bread
   With the sinful and outcast,
You were looked upon as ungodly.
Because You broke bread with the joyful,
You were called a drunk and a glutton.
Because You broke bread in the upper-room,

You sealed Your acceptance of the cross.
Because You broke bread in Emmaus,
  You made the scales fall
  From the disciples’ eyes.

                         87
All: Because You broke bread and shared it,
     We will do so too,
And we ask for Your blessing.
L: Lord Jesus Christ,
Set Your blessing on the bread
     Which we have broken
     And shared with each other.
     Renew our common life,
     That with each other
     We may share the scriptures
And feel our hearts burning within us
On the road of our lives.

17. Blessing after communion (Iona community)

L: Let us pray in deep gratitude,
For this moment, for this meal,
For all people we have prayed for,
       We give ourselves to You.
All: Bless us to live as changed people
Because we have shared the Living Bread
       And cannot remain the same.
Ask much of us, expect much from us,
Enable much by us, encourage many through us.
So, Lord, may we live to Your glory,
       Both as inhabitants of earth
And citizens of the commonwealth of heaven.
L: Your blessing be with us, Lord,
The blessing of the Father, the Son,
       And the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen

                         88
18. The blessings of Christ

Blessed are the poor, not the penniless,
But those whose hearts are free.
Blessed are the meek, not the soft,
But those who are patient and tolerant.
  Blessed are the merciful,
  Not those who forget,
  But those who forgive.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
Not those who act like angels,
But those whose lives are transparent.
  Blessed are the peacemakers,
  Not those who shun conflict,
But those who face it squarely.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for justice,
Not because they suffer, but because they love.
Thus we are blessed by our God,
Who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit

All: Amen
