 I - AGE 40-49: THE SIGNS OF AGING SET IN
A - Skin aging at 40: wrinkles set in, loss of radiance and firmness.
Yves Rocher has been working in close collaboration with CERCO (The Centre for Cosmetics
Research) for a number of years. CERCO is our clinical expertise centre accredited by
the French Ministry of Health. One of its role is to characterize and evaluate skin-aging markers.
For several years, CERCO has been conducting objectification studies on the signs of
skin aging based on age.
An initial study of wrinkle depth conducted with women aged 25 to 75 showed that wrinkles
settle in most around age 40.
Starting out as simple expression lines at age 30, they then set in and progressively anchor
themselves in more deeply in parts of the face that have the most movement (mainly around
the eyes and lips).
A second study dealt with cellular renewal. Carried out on 100 volunteers, this study showed that
between ages 40 and 50, corneocyte renewal decreases by 15%, leading to a loss of radiance
and a settling in of wrinkles.
Lastly, we know today that loss of firmness starts to be noticeable at age 40 because dermal
collagen decreases by 56% before age 40. To effectively meet this triple need, you need a targeted
solution.

B - The biological mechanism involved: cellular cohesion
Skin cells are naturally attached to each other by attachment proteins. This is called cellular
cohesion or cell-cell adherence.
This meshing or cohesion of the cellular network is one of the fundamental characteristics of
young, healthy skin. Now, with age, this cellular cohesion has a tendency to slacken and then
produce a chain reaction: poor cellular communication and a slowdown in the following processes:
regeneration, cell differentiation, metabolic activity of tissues and collagen synthesis. This visibly
translates into a dull complexion, lack of radiance, wrinkles setting in and a loss of firmness.
