The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Iblees placed his throne on water then he sends out his emissaries, and the closest of them to him in status is the one who causes the most fitnah (tribulation). One of them comes and says, ‘I d i d s u c h a n d s u c h ,’ a n d h e s a y s , ‘ Yo u h a v e n o t d o n e m u c h .’ T h e n a n o t h e r o f t h e m c o m e s and says, ‘I did not leave him alone until I c a u s e d d i v i s i o n b e t w e e n h i m a n d h i s w i fe ,’ and he draws him close to him and says, ‘How g o o d y o u a r e .’ ” [Muslim]
