The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is the federal regulator for
registered charities. To support Canada’s donors and charitable
sector, the CRA provides these useful tips:

                                             • Make	cheques	payable	to	the	charity,	not	to	an	individual.

                                             • Make	sure	you	are	on	a	secure	website	when	donating	online.

                                             • Think	twice	before	making	a	donation	if	you	feel	pressured	or
if there are signs of fraud.

                                             • Beware	of	tax	schemes	that	offer	you	an	official	donation
receipt	for	more	than	you	donate.

                                             • And	remember	–	how	much	you	give,	and	how	often	you	give,
                                                is always up to you!

                Energy Contracts

                                       Take Charge
The Ontario Energy Board wants you to know more about your rights
and responsibilities as an energy consumer. Being well-informed can
help you make the right energy decisions for you and your family or
                                        small business.
If you’re thinking about switching who supplies your energy by signing a
retail energy contract, here are some of the things you should keep in mind:
                                        • You	have	options.	Take	the	time	to	understand	your	options	and
compare the price your utility offers with what the retail supplier
                                           is offering.
                                        • People	representing	energy	retailers	are	required	to	present	proper
identification that displays their photograph, name, and the company
                                           they represent.
                                        • You	don’t	have	to	show	a	sales	agent	your	energy	bill.	Treat	it	like	a
credit card – keep it confidential until you’re ready to sign a contract.
                                        • If	you	sign	a	contract	with	an	energy	retailer	and	change	your	mind,
you	have	10	days	to	cancel	the	contract.	If	you	cancel	the	contract
after	that	time,	you	may	have	to	pay	a	cancellation	fee.

                Auto Insurance Changes
                                             You Now Have More Choice
If you’re a driver and insured in Ontario, you’re affected by recent
changes to the province’s auto insurance system.
As a result of these reforms, some coverages under the
standard auto insurance policy have changed.

                                             You can now:

                                             • Choose	the	insurance	coverage	that	best	meets	your	protection
                                                needs and budget.

                                             • Customize	your	level	of	coverage	for	medical,	rehabilitation,
attendant care, caregiver, housekeeping and home maintenance
                                                expenses.

                                             • Better	combine	your	auto	insurance	with	private
disability insurance coverage, or individual or group
                                                health insurance coverage.

It’s important to understand how these changes affect you, before
you renew your existing auto insurance policy or buy
a new auto insurance policy. The choices you make will affect your
coverage and the price you pay for insurance.

                Buying a Vehicle?

Make sure you buy from an Ontario-registered dealer – one of
the best ways to get consumer protection.

Ontario-registered dealers are registered with the Ontario Motor
Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) and follow government regulations
                                        and a code of ethics.

                Make a Smart Move

Moving can be hassle-free or a big headache. It often depends
on the movers you hire. The worst-case scenario is that the
movers are late, they’re not careful handling your furnishings
and belongings, and their invoice is more than expected
                                        because of extra hidden costs.
Organization and planning are key to avoiding these kinds of
problems. Here are some practical tips the Ministry of Consumer
Services provides for a smooth move:
                                        • Ask	friends	and	relatives	to	recommend	a	mover	they	have
                                           used before.
                                        • It’s	smart	to	get	at	least	three	written	estimates	before	you
                                           hire a mover.
                                        • A	reputable	mover	will	want	to	inspect	your	furnishings	to
help prepare a reliable quote. Don’t deal with movers who say
the inspection isn’t necessary or want to give you a
                                           quote over the phone.
                                        • Ensure	all	parties	sign	a	detailed	written	agreement.
Keep copies of your agreement, estimates and any
                                           related correspondence.
                                        • If	your	move	involves	the	storage	of	goods,	go	to	the	storage
facility and check it out. If the movers don’t want you to see
their operation, consider hiring someone else.

                Dealing with Telemarketers
Many consumers buy goods and services over the telephone.
Sometimes it’s a quick and convenient way to get a great deal.
But be careful — phoney telemarketers cheat consumers out
of millions of dollars each year. While you may not be able to
avoid all unsolicited calls, here are some tips from the Ministry
of Consumer Services to keep in mind when buying over
                                             the telephone:
                                             • Ask	questions.	Make	sure	you	get	the	company’s	name	and
contact	information.	Ask	how	long	they’ve	been	in	business.
                                             • Never	pay	any	kind	of	fee	for	a	prize	or	to	claim	lottery	winnings.
                                             • Never	share	information	about	your	finances,	bank	accounts
or credit cards unless you know the person or company you’re
                                                dealing with.
                                             • Beware	of	high-pressure	sales	tactics.	Reputable	companies
                                                always respect your choices.
                                             • Never	send	money	to	someone	who	insists	on	immediate
                                                payment or down payment.
                                             • Be	cautious	if	someone	offers	you	a	business	or	investment
                                                “opportunity” from an unknown source.
                                             • Remember,	it’s	okay	to	simply	hang	up	on	any	high-pressure
sales person or a suspicious phone call.

Payday Loans: Protect Yourself and Your Money
Thinking about getting a payday loan? Payday loans are a very
expensive way to borrow money. Before obtaining a payday loan,
explore other credit options. If you require payday loan services,
be sure to deal only with licensed payday lenders.
Here’s a checklist to keep in mind:
