Therapeutic Grade Oils Organic Farming - Young Living cultivates over 2,000 acres of farm land in Idaho and Utah. We take great pains to control every phase of organic herb productions: Species Selection - We select only the species of herbs for cultivation that will produce the most active and widest array of constituents. The lavender we grow is an authentic Lavendula Officinal’s, which yields an oil low in camphor and rich in lavendulol acetate (believed to play an important part of its therapeutic action). Site Selection - We grow herbs on land uncontaminated by chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides. We irrigate with pure mountain water and use an advanced mix of enzymes, trace minerals and organic biosolids to build and maintain the soil. Plants lacking certain minerals and nutrients yield oils low in therapeutic value. Harvesting - Because our distillation is part of the farm where the herbs are grown, they are distilled fresh. We monitor the percentage of the plant in bloom, the time of day for cutting, and many other factors critical to top-grade, therapeutic oil production. German chamomile, for example, must be harvested in the late afternoon to maximize levels of azulene and biosobolol in the oil. We grow dozens of different species of plants, including lavender, peppermint, basil, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, fennel, marjoram, melissa, oregano, pine, spearmint, tarragon, thyme, Idaho tansy, yarrow and Chinese Wolfberry on our farms in Idaho and Utah. Young Living's clary sage reached over 62" in height just Prior to distillation. When steam distilled, the oil yielded Over 5% sclareol, 10 times higher than the industry Standard. Moreover, last year's crop contained an unprecedented 72% linalyl acetate - unheard of in the industry. Advanced Steam Distillation… Young Living takes extraordinary pains to preserve all of the fragile chemical constituents in our essential oils. Plants are steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using a special low-pressure, lowheat vertical steam technology developed by D. Gary Young. No solvents or synthetic chemicals of any kind are used or added. Moreover, the cookers are constructed from costly stainless steel alloys to minimize the possibility of the essential oil being chemically altered by more reactive metals, such as aluminum, steel, or copper. The results are grade A master pieces with unsurpassed therapeutic properties. Essential oils are rich tapestries of numerous chemical components, some of which—even in small quantities—contribute important therapeutic benefits. Cypress, for example, requires 24 hours of distillation at 245 degrees Fahrenheit and 5 pounds of pressure to extract all of its active ingredients. If distillation is shortened by only two hours, 18 to 20 of its chemical constituents will be missing. To cut costs, some processors increase pressure and heat and cut distillation times dramatically. Even though the oil is considered pure, it may only contain a fraction of its possible complex chemistry—and therapeutic value. Uncompromising Quality Control… Every batch of essential oils received at Young Living's laboratorieswhether grown at the Young Living farms or in a foreign country—is quarantined, inspected, and tested for purity and quality with both organoleptic and chemical analysis. Samples are sent to independent laboratories for analysis by state-of-the-art, high-resolution gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and infrared spectra analysis. These tests unmask the chemical anatomy of each oil, helping to expose oils that may be impure, adulterated, or even improperly distilled. Some oils are subjected to further levels of testing at labs in England, France and Weber State University. Altogether, oils can go through five separate levels of quality analysis before they are released. ** Relying on certificates of analysis by independent labs is important in determining whether the oils you buy are therapeutic grade, since the results of in-house, supplier-based labs can easily be distorted for self-serving ends. Simply showing higher peaks as evidence that an oil is superior does not mean the oil is either pure or superior. Higher peaks could, in fact, indicate than an oil is spiked with synthetics or inexpensive essential oil fractions. A rich and varied chemical profile is a far more important measure of quality and purity. ***According to the Lavender Growers Association, 100 times more "lavender oil" was exported from France than is actually grown in France. Where is the extra oil coming from? What the leading authority on the medical application of essential oils says about Young Living's quality: “I found Young Living's essential oils to be top quality, definitely deserving the term, "therapeutic grade". Young Living is constantly adding new oils, but their currently available selection-whether freshly cultivated and steam distilled or imported-is ample for all types of therapy.” Daniel Pénoël, M.D. International Authority on Essential Oils How to be sure your essential oils are therapeutic-grade: *Are the fragrances subtle, rich, organic, and delicate? Do they “feel” natural? *Do the fragrances of your oils vary from batch to batch as an indication that they are pure and painstakingly distilled in small batches rather than industrially processed and mixed on a large scale? *Does your supplier send each batch of essential oils it receives through up to five different chemical analyses before it is released? *Are these tests performed by independent labs? *Does your supplier grow and distill its own organically grown herbs? *Does your supplier use low pressure and low temperature to distill essential oils and preserve all of their fragile chemical constituents? Are the distillation cookers vertical rather than horizontal? Are they fabricated from costly stainless steel alloys to reduce the likelihood of the oils chemically reacting with metal? *Does your supplier have representatives traveling worldwide to personally inspect the fields and distilleries where the herbs are grown and distilled? *Does your supplier buy directly from the grower? *Does your supplier scrutinize the facilities to ensure that no synthetic chemicals are used? *Has your supplier been doing all this for over 15 years?
