,Yesterday I spent the day at the, a big gathering of some of the best minds
in leading social media efforts on behalf of large corporate brands. The event
was put on by the team at Useful Social Media – and that indeed was the theme
of the day as panelists offered real case studies, answered tough questions
and generally demonstrated that there is real hope for large corporate brands
to actively use social media to generate real business value in multiple ways.
Here are some of the biggest lessons that 10 brands featured on Day 1 of the
event shared in their presentations:1. American Express* – “Altruism has a
long tail.”Uniquely qualified to talk about the impact of altruism, American
ExpressVP of Social Media Laura Fink went behind the scenes of the hugely
successful “” campaign that American Express launched back in November of
2010 to create a day where consumers could get rewarded with a $25 statement
credit for shopping at a small business location. According to Fink, the
campaign engaged more than 1.2 million small businesses around the country
and also helped those businesses to see a 28% sales lift on the day of the
promotion. Perhaps more importantly, it showed that doing something good can
generate a real business impact for customers as well as for the big brand
putting on the campaign.,2. Union Pacific – “Never underestimate local
communities.”One of the largest railway companies in the United States, Union
Pacific has also been around for nearly 150 years. To celebrate this heritage,
Senior Manager of Media Technology Tim Mcmahan shared a case study of a
crowdsourced competition that Union Pacific held to get people to vote on
the ideal route for one of their old steam engines to take on the “.” The
voting was split into several rounds, with some fierce competition from
unexpected locations. Through each round, Mcmahon shared that the
consistently surprising result was that smaller towns like Tuscola, IL were
routinely outpacing big metro markets like Chicago. The point, he noted, was
that sometimes the most passion for a campaign like this can come from smaller
local communities for whom winning may be a bigger deal. Across the campaign,
there were nearly 200,000 votes recorded, over 100,000 email addresses
captured and the brand plans to reprise the campaign next year.,3. Coca-Cola*
– “The most important number in social media is 360.”Through the brilliant
video below, Coke‟s Director of Digital Communications Ashley Brown told the
story of a big ambitious PR idea which turned into the largest social media
campaign the brand had ever done. The mission was to send three lucky travelers
on a journey to all 206 countries around the world where Coke was sold. The
trio embarked on their journey on January 1, 2010 and anyone could choose
to follow their travels and adventures on the website Expedition 206 (which
sadly doesn‟t seem to be available online anymore). Their goal in each country
was to find what made people happy – which Brown noted was perfectly on
strategy for Coke to build on their existing brand platform and marketing
campaign centered around the idea to “open happiness.” The answers they got
ranged from family to music to dancing to soccer (yes, they made it to the
World Cup in South Africa). Through the lens of this beautiful social
experiment disguised as marketing, the team managed to reach what may be the
most profound conclusion of all … that happiness is always simple, whatever
form it takes.4. Best Buy – “Nobody owns social media.”In one of the most
eye-opening talks of the day, Gina Debogovich shared some big lessons learned
from her time over the last 3-4 years building up the Best Buy customer service
and social care center to what is now called the “. As a former customer care
person herself, she talked about how Best Buy uses the overarching mission
of “creating meaningful communications in the virtual world” to guide all
of their efforts. They have an inner circle of about 26 team members dedicated
to social media at their team, and then an extended 3000 employees who are
actively encouraged to use social media and offered lots of different forms
of training on how to do it. Her team is a resource that individual stores
can use for advice on such tasks as how to effectively use Facebook
specifically for their store. In addition, their team is the only customer
care team in the world who currently has their own production studio for
creating content such as theirfeature. In one case, Gina shared the unheard
of stat of how they managed to reduce the volume of one “call driver” (customer
service lingo for a top reason that people call a contact center) by 50% simply
by producing a video to answer that question.,Disclaimer: I moderated this
panel where Gina spoke.5. Samsung – “Negative experiences are our biggest
opportunity.”Samsung is a brand that has made lots of strides recently in
integrating social media into their customer service, and has been very active
in joining conversations about their brand online. One of the leaders of this,
Jessica Kalbarczyk () shared her insights about how her small team of four
colleagues manages to engage people online about Samsung, and help solve their
problems. For Jessica, coming from a marketing and PR role into one more
focused on customer service was a fulfilling role because every day she
manages to address real problems and change consumers experiences one by one.
Anyone in a marketing role who has suffered through never ending meetings
about social media without a real vision or tangible outcome will easily be
able to imagine how nice a feeling it much be to actually solve real problems
and the sense of accomplishment that would offer on a daily basis. As part
of that, she shared a point of view which is common among customer service
pros … that they would much rather find negativity and have a chance to fix
it and change that consumer‟s perception. Marketers, on the other hand,. There
is clearly a lesson here about the necessity ofmore closely.,Disclaimer: I
moderated this panel where Jessica spoke.6. Dell – “Forget ROI and focus more
broadly on business value.”At the top of most analyst‟s lists of brands that
have managed to integrate social media into their operations in a real and
tangible way would likely be computer maker Dell. During his talk, Richard
Binhammer from Dell shared a historical perspective of how social media became
integrated into the organization, and one of the most powerful points in his
presentation was where he shared the six business areas which have fully
embraced social media for different business reasons – marketing, product
development, sales, online presence, customer service and communications.
While other brands focus on one of these at a time, Dell has reached a point
where they can “inhale and exhale at the same time” as Richard shared in his
talk. Ultimately, his biggest point is that “ROI” is such a restricting term
when it comes to describing what social media can offer and there is a much
stronger way to describe the real value behind it that we need to think about
including in more of our discussions.,Disclaimer: I moderated this panel
where Richard spoke.7. Southwest – “Have fun and be human.”Fun and airline
are not two words that anyone would typically use in the same sentence, yet
Social Media Manager from Southwest Airlines Alice Wilson devoted a good part
of her talk about how Southwest creates a more human brand by using an
irreverant voice. The questions that keep many other large brands up at night
in terms of making sure they have backup for employees who are running social
media channels, or mapping everything back to some specific campaign or column
on a spreadsheet don‟t seem to matter as much for Southwest. They have guiding
principles around their social voice, yet Alice shares that most people who
speak out for the brand “just get the hang of it.” Without that formalized
training or overly bureaucratic approach to managing every aspect of
Southwest, the brand succeeds because they have such a strong culture that
people start to take it on as their own from day one and this translates into
social media.,Disclaimer: I moderated this panel where Alice spoke.8. Kodak
– “Real time listening pays off.”Kodak is a brand that has won a lot of respect
for how forward thinking they have been in moving into social media over the
past several years, even publishing a guidebook which was available for the
attendees on how to use social media and what they had learned. In his talk
Tom Hoen, the Kodak Director of Interactive Marketing, shared a number of
examples demonstrating the power of listening. In one example, the brand awoke
to a barrage of negativity from fans of a Nickelodeon TV show called Degrassi
because there was a rumor that the brand had pulled all their advertising
due to the show‟s sometimes adult themes. Fairly rapidly, they were able to
use social media to diffuse the rumor (it was actually just a natural pause
in flighting for their ads) and engage those angry voices – leading one person
to share on Twitter “Now I feel bad. I told the Kodak people to eff themselves
sideways, and they sent me a tweet being all nice.” Aside from the newly found
good feelings, Degrassi and Nickelodeon offered up 2 free spots to Kodak
during their season premiere. Not a bad ROI for engaging a few irate teens.,9.
New York Life – “Brands need to trust their people.”An unexpected voice at
the event came from Gregory Weiss, the AVP of Social Media for New York Life.
He started with an entertaining look at the hypcritical nature of business,
and how many large brands are afraid of what their employees might do with
social media even though they let those same employees have phones and use
fax machines and talk to people outside of the company. His main point was
that if you can‟t trust your employees to do the right things and make the
right choices, then maybe you need to hire better people. He offered several
real tips for using social media in a corporate environment, including
supporting your existing sales force, getting on the agenda of new hire
initiations so you can tell them about social media, and even simple things
like encouraging people to add your social media properties to the end of
their email signatures. A point I took away as well, though he didn‟t mention
it was about the importance of picking your battles. Apparently, New York
Life also has a vetting process they use internally before any social media
property can link to an outside website. That might seem like overkill for
many brands, but Greg manages to work around it without making it a big
issue.10. Pepsi – “Reward people for everyday behaviour.”The last
presentation of the day came from Josh Karpf, who focuses on an area that
more brands should consider having as part of their marketing efforts …
digital research and development. His group runs many forward thinking
experiments on how to use social media to engage consumers, and he shared
some real examples and hard data from a few of their efforts around trying
to offer couponing as a layer on top of geolocation and encouraging people
to check in. For one campaign with Hess convenience stores, they found that
using a Foursquare promotion in a particular location offered a 47% boost
in volume of purchase over previous weeks where the campaign was not running
– a great result for the retailer. On the Pepsi side, they interesting learned
that coupon redemptions were much higher when offered to people as a reward
for some type of behaviour, which seems to offer the logical conclusion that
people are more likely to follow through a claim the discount or product from
a coupon if they feel they had to “earn” that coupon in some way such as by
checking into the gym for 10 days in a month.,*NOTE:Several of the brands
mentioned in this post are current or previous Ogilvy clients. In particular,
Coca-Cola and American Express are both clients and some Ogilvy team members
may have worked on both of the campaigns mentioned. In both cases, I did not
work in either campaign and also have not been compensated or encouraged in
any way to write about these two brands or these campaigns. I am also a
contributor to the American Express Open Forum website.Originally published
at the, announced today that it has teamed up withon recipe search. Foodily,
a social recipe network, will curate Blekko‟s search results for recipes,
which the company calls “a cluttered and spam rich environment on most search
engines”.“Search has always been a personal experience but the escalating
amount of spam on the Web is driving search to become social, where communities
and groups of friends can help call out the best of results,” said Rich
Skrenta, CEO of blekko. “Foodily‟s trusted community of cooks and food lovers
will be a tremendous resource to blekko searchers.”We talked to Skrenta last
week about Blekko‟s Zorro update, search quality, and filtering. The search
engine is now integrating hundreds of its “slashtags” into search results.
These are at the root of the human curation element of Blekko.“Foodily‟s
mission is to help everyone find the food they want and love, and share it
with their social circle. We‟re excited to play a role in helping blekko
searchers find great resources on food, cooking and recipes,” said Andrea
Cutright, CEO of Foodily. “The Foodily community is rising to the challenge
of bringing the best recipe content to the top, so we can all enjoy quickly
finding that next great meal.”says it has “increased its accuracy and database
of information” by adding computational knowledge from. “This partnership
means Wolfram Alpha will allow ChaCha users to access computed facts that
cover over 100 topics,” a representative tells WebProNews. “This is in
addition to ChaCha‟s “ask-a-smart-friend” database that has already answered
over one billion questions.”In the partnership‟s first day, Wolfram Alpha
answered 32,000 of ChaCha‟s incoming questions, ChaCha says.,,New media has
completely transformed the way consumers gather news and information. While
it has created many new opportunities, it has also brought about numerous
challenges to traditional media and even contributed to, what some
consider,.Some traditional media enterprises have embraced new media with
great success. Others, however, have not had the same experience. One of the
biggest blows, if you will, to traditional media has been that consumers have
become reporters themselves. We have seen how powerful these reports have
been in, the, and more.Today, consumers no longer have to wait until
designated times to get their news and information. Not only that, they don‟t
even have to visit specific news sites to find out what‟s going on. News today
is easily accessible wherever consumers are.How do you consume news? Do you
utilize traditional media forms, or do you rely on new media outlets? The big
question in all this is, how will media continue to evolve? This is exactly
what theand thesought out to do some 2 years ago. When the effort began, it
seemed to lean heavily in the direction of saving journalism, namely,
struggling media enterprises. In 2010, the FTC released its “,” which was
received with.Since then, the FTC has not been involved with the effort. The
FCC, however, recently released its own “Future of Media” report called “.”
This report was met with both criticism and praise. Most of the criticism
came from the left, and the praise came from right wing groups that want to
preserve the First Amendment.Speaking about the report a senior research
fellow with the Technology Policy Project at the, told us the report was a
“welcome relief.” He said, “It shied away from the more extreme types of
proposals that we had heard some academics put out there in the past.”The
report focuses on the abundance of media and how consumers can access this
wealth of information with as little as a click of a mouse, but it didn‟t
actually call for any drastic recommendations. It did note that traditional
media institutes are struggling and that high-quality journalism was hard
to find, even in this age of abundance. However, consumers now have choice,
which was something that was strictly limited before. The FCC admits that
getting both really high-quality journalism and giving consumers options is
a difficult challenge. Although the commission did not provide a solution
to this dilemma, it did advise the media to continue experimenting with
processes and systems.strongly opposed the report and called it a “major
disappointment.” In a, President and CEOsaid, “The report discusses many
important ideas, but where the FCC actually has the power to help local
communities, the agency abdicates its responsibility in the areas.”Free
Press, along with many other media reform organizations, hoped that the report
would call for more aggressive policy proposals to ensure quality news and
information for local communities.“If the FCC decides to relax, waive, or
ignore its own rules that prevent the formation of local media monopolies,
it may temporarily help pad the profits of the large conglomerates, but it
will not cure what ails journalism or the media industry,” said Aaron. “The
only way to ensure vibrant, quality journalism-and a healthy democracy-is
to engage the public so starved for meaningful local news and information
today. We hope that this report can still serve as a catalyst for better public
policy to address the serious problems the document identifies.”On the other
side of controversy, Thierer said, “There‟s an important wall in America,
a wall between, if you will, press and state… that wall is rarely breached,
and it should not be breached so easily just because there‟s a time when the
media is struggling in this country, as they are today.”“This debate has a
level of elitism at the margins at times where some people say, „You need
to eat your greens and find the good journalism,‟” he said. “Living in an
age of abundance in the Internet and digital world… we can spend a lot of
time online – probably messing around, watching and listening to all sorts
of stuff, including a lot of nonsense – and not always consuming that which
others think is best for us. But the question is, how do you force them to
do that?”He also asks the question, “Do you want a massive bailout of failing
journalistic enterprises?”From a practical standpoint, Thierer believes that
if the government begins to impose policy on the media, it will only lead
to more policies. While the government could bring some improvements to the
media sector, he doesn‟t think that it should be able to force what it thinks
users should consume.“Information technology is moving way too fast for our
federal regulators to keep up with it,” he said. “We live in gut-wrenching,
interesting, disruptive times… some of this experimentation and evolution
is just going to have to play itself out… there isn‟t any easy answer.”Do
you think the government needs to step in to help improve the media sector?,,A
successful online business isn‟t built overnight; but is the result of many
late nights. If anyone says that they can teach you to make a substantial
amount of money without hard work, realize they are talking through “a hole
in the head and are out of their trees”.After three and a bit years doing
it, here are my TEN COMMANDMENTS setting out how to conduct business
online:1.Understand that technology should help you achieve your business
and personal goals. It is merely a tool to move you forward with your vision:
a “means to an end” to HELP and enable you, rather than being an end in itself,
(or perhaps even be a disabler to “untechnos” like me). So make modern
technology work to it‟s highest potential for you and your business. Spend
time learning about various computer programmes and applications (hard though
it may be for the „technically challenged‟). Then “use it repeatedly , so
you don‟t lose it!” Accept that the vast majority of www. users are not
“technofreaks” (like my associate, Bill) and have great difficulty learning
new computer procedures. Well, I certainly do (just ask Bill)!. However, by
making a conscious effort and with discipline and effort the habit ingrained
makes it easier and easier, as your confidence grows in leaps and
bounds.2.Don‟t take the competition for granted…and don‟t “knock” them. Never
ever! Yes, even you “slick” Americans and we “little country colonial hicks
on the other side of the world”. Accept that no business can be the best in
every facet. The convergence of computer, media, entertainment and
communications means the underlying structures of the computer world will
change rapidly and soon… or so my “technogeek” associate, Bill (not Gates)
says. The TV/computer/music center is not far away, I hear. The net is a world
wide market-place, so don‟t be too zenophobic (now that‟s a really big word,
that I tried very hard to bring in). I think many Americans (and New Zealanders
too) think that theirs is the only country on earth in which to trade and
the centre of the world…and we‟re nearly falling off the bottom near
Antarctica! However, we can all compete fairly (“fairly”) against the
competition by transcending international boundaries on a “global level
playing field” – whereby even the “little guys” can take on the big
corporations around the world (except for their massive marketing budgets,
of course!) . It may mean adjusting your marketing efforts to take into account
some cultural differences (like my rather weird sense of humour or different
spelling – although it‟s the same English language). Here in “Sleepy Hollow”
(with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country) in little New
Zealand near the bottom of the world, we sell our various products around
the globe in response to customer needs.3.Consolidate your business by
focusing on what you do best. Don‟t try to be “all things” to your customer,
nor try to offer too many products. Concentrate on perfecting and marketing
your “best sellers” in your CORE business activities. That is the area which
produces the most profitable results for your organization. (remember the
“80-20 rule” – 20% of your activities produces 80% of your results/profit
and vice versa!). For us it‟s creative writing courses. Now for one rather
more philosophical…4.Honour your parents, your teachers and your communities
and especially your family. Family is most precious of all and strong and
stable family units make for a strong and stable country. Parenting, I believe
is the most noble occupation of all – and parents want their children to be
safe on line, so supervise them closely. Teach them responsibility in internet
usage… so they don‟t push your telephone bill sky high (as my dear boys do
– but then that‟s the price of having and educating children – a tax on sex!).
Teach your children well (as Simon and Garfunkel used to sing so melodiously)
and wisely. Let them learn that the net is a great EDUCATION tool for the
present and the future and they could be learning “practical skills on the
job” and preparing for a future technological career.5. Do not send spam
(sending masses of unsolicited e-mail) – under any circumstances. You are
likely to be cut off by your server. I find it rather irritating receiving
spam and simply delete all unsolicited e-mail selling products and services…
and wouldn‟t you do likewise, because it just clutters up your mailbox?6.Do
not launch your product before the market is ready for it. Test the market
first by doing a survey. Ask yourself: Is there a NEED for your particular
product? In what way is it distinctive (and superior) to the competition
(world-wide, remember!)? Have all your systems in place to market it… then
always remember, all products have a definite life cycle…and some are
relatively short.7.Take the business of internet marketing seriously. The
world online population is exploding daily and exponentially (big word,
eh…but what does it mean?). I‟m not sure how many people are online world-wide,
but think it may be in the order of 150-200 million at present and increasing
daily. In addition, I “guess” there are a similar number of web sites (and
many more pages) “up there in cyberspace”. So the competition is “pretty
stiff”! As the “cyber-revolution” gathers momentum, imagine if everyone is
online one day? Impossible perhaps, but who knows! What will that do for your
business and you? An unlimited target market for your PRODUCTS , if you are
still going strong by then. VERY EXCITING!8.Have an effective web presence.
Your site should explain immediately what the visitor will get for their time
online. If it is not clear WHY they should stay, they‟ll leave before they
try to find out. Therefore make your site as interesting and informative as
you can. I‟ve seen many sites, where I don‟t know the webmaster‟s objective,
their purpose. Are they purely for information, or trying to sell something?
Make sure your site loads quickly, because people soon get tired of waiting
in today‟s fast/instant (coffee) world.9.Always remember MARKETING YOUR
PRODUCT EFFECTIVELY is the key to the success of your business. If you don‟t
get adequate results, you‟ll soon be out of business… as recurring bills in
the post-box without income to pay them soon take all the fun out of your
venture into “cyber” self-employment.Don‟t forget to use traditional methods
of marketing to promote your business, as in advertising (radio, news-papers,
brochures, and the most effective of all, word of mouth in your local
community). The two strategies (both on-line and off-line), I believe, work
best together in your marketing plan. I plan to do more off-line advertising,
by allocating a portion of revenue to marketing as it comes in.Even if you
have the greatest product in the world, you will never sell anything if you
don‟t tell people about it. It‟s like having a billboard in the middle of
a forest or a desert. An example: Just because you have a phone number in
the phone book doesn‟t mean that a stranger will call you. So it is absolutely
vital that you advertise effectively to bring people to your site; because
without advertising, there will be no TRAFFIC… and without prospects there
will be NO SALES. And without sales there will soon be no business!…and finally
and most importantly,.10.Use the Internet to build a better world. We are
at the forefront of one of the most innovative and far-reaching inventions
in human history. The net is the most cost-efficient, INSTANTANEOUS, EXCITING
and effective way of marketing products and services around the globe through
modern telecommunications. We live in one of the most exciting times in human
history; so exploit the AMAZING POWER of the internet to reach hundreds of
thousands of people and perhaps even millions around the world Use your
creative energies and imagination to the fullest, by thinking of new ideas
of how to market your particular products. I keep a notebook by my bedside
and leave to my creative subconscious mind just before I go to sleep.SUMMARY:I
believe INTERNET MARKETING is the KEY to internet success, especially if you
have a limited marketing budget, like us. I allocate at least two hours a
day purely to internet marketing, through submitting my articles on numerous
subjects to various ezines and publishing resources. I find it by far the
most effective way of free advertising to get traffic (= SALES) . Always
remember to have a resource box at the end of each article, together with
your web site address.Carefully monitor what‟s working for you and what‟s
not on a regular basis. REVIEW YOUR STRATEGIES REGULARLY.FOCUS ON WHAT ACTIONS
GET THE BEST RESULTS.Remember Bill Gates‟s wise words: “There‟ll be two types
of business in the year 2000 : those online… and those out of business.A few
final words to summarize…There are no „magic secrets‟, and there is nothing
mystical about making money online. Other than the advertising budget, it‟s
a level playing field around the world and anyone, like the self-employed
entrepreneur working from home , like you and I, can compete with the “big
guys”. And we have ONE BIG ADVANTAGE: These corporations are too unwieldy
to react swiftly to changing circumstances and markets. So we “one and two
man bands have got the jump on them”.With heaps of hard work, dedication,
discipline and a little perseverance, I believe absolutely anyone can achieve
success, even taking on the big corporations. At Eagle Productions working
in association with Bill Rosoman of the New Zealand Enterprise Centre and
Erich Licht of Elk Publications in the US, I‟ve done it all on an absolutely
“shoestring” budget, lots of hard graft and heaps of pure faith. We have been
reasonably successful to date (the past three years), but have great hopes
of far greater success in the future. No matter, we are enjoying the journey
in a totally new field and are having great fun learning and extending
ourselves each day . I hope you too take pleasure and have great success as
you travel along your very individual journey in “cyberspace”.No matter where
you may live on this planet, cyberspace can produce income to so many “budding
netrepreneurs” . The www gives „ordinary people‟ without much capital, like
you and I a great BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY: the opportunity of self employment
by reaching out to a GLOBAL market-place. Each one of us has a responsibility
to ourselves and our families. It is up to each one of us to reach out and
help many people around the world through being innovative and original in
our ideas… and the money we earn from selling our array of unique products
can be used for many good purposes, like perhaps even helping others achieve
their dreams. In doing that, WE WILL BE MAKING THE MOST USE OF OUR UNIQUE
ABILITIES.The successful cyber entrepreneur of today could well be the
equivalent of the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Kennedy‟s, Paul Getty‟s and
Henry Ford‟s of yesteryear, especially in the new ENTREPRENEURIAL (nice big
word) AGE, which I believe, is even more important (and a more appropriate
term) than the information age. What you do today could repay you a
hundred-fold tomorrow…and there is just one rule:If you really BELIEVE in
your product, then get onto the playing field (or perhaps you “Yanks” call
it “the park”) of cyberspace – then as the Nike ad says,JUST DO IT WITH
EVERYTHING YOU‟VE GOT!I hope this helps in your future marketing
decisions.*Previously published atSerge Daudelin is a top Marketing Agent
