This manual presents policies, requirements, and procedures to be followed by candidates for
Master Degrees in the Department of Health Education and Promotion. In addition to this
document, it is very important that students become familiar with ECU’s Graduate Catalog
(http://author.ecu.edu/cs-hhp/hlth/upload/grcat0607.pdf). ECU’s Graduate Catalog contains
information on the Academic Integrity Policy, admission and readmission, financial assistance,
the grading system and many other important topics.

The Graduate Programs offered though the Department of Health Education and Promotion
include: a MA in Health Education; a MAED in School Health Education; a MS in
Environmental Health; and a MS in Athletic Training. Section II of this manual describes each
of these Programs in detail. Section I presents information important to all of the Programs.

                        Graduate Study at East Carolina University

East Carolina University is the third largest university in The University of North Carolina
system. Enrollment is nearly 27,000 students, 5000 of which are graduate students. Graduate
programs are offered in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, the Schools of Allied
Health Sciences, Medicine, and Nursing, and the Colleges of Business, Education, Fine Arts and
Communication, Health and Human Performance, Human Ecology, and Technology and

                        The College of Health & Human Performance

The College of Health & Human Performance is dedicated to excellence in academics, teaching,
research and scholarship, and community and professional service. The graduate faculty in the
College represents expertise in many fields of specialization, which enable them to provide
graduate students with rich and significant educational experiences. State-of-the-art laboratories,
including the biomechanics lab, human performance lab, the environmental health labs and
special populations lab, provide outstanding learning opportunities for graduate students.
Excellent opportunities exist for research and course work outside the College on the academic

      The Department of Health Education & Promotion and the Graduate Program

The Department of Health Education & Promotion is an autonomous department within the
College of Health and Human Performance. The Department supports professional preparation
programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and a service program of classes open to
the University at large.

The department is composed of 40 faculty members, 25 of whom hold doctoral degrees. The
research and publication record of the faculty is nationally recognized. Graduate students have
the opportunity to work closely with faculty members in their instructional, research, and service
programs. These programs include ongoing research efforts in adolescent health, HIV-
prevention education, substance abuse prevention education, worksite health promotion and
environmental health. The faculty also provides consultation services to schools, industries, and
community agencies.

Graduate degrees in the Department include the Master of Arts in Health Education and
Promotion, with multiple areas of specialization, the Master of Arts in Education, specializing in
School Health Education, the Master of Science in Environmental Health and the Master of
Science in Athletic Training.

                                     Academic Regulations

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a fundamental value of higher education and East Carolina University. All
graduate students are responsible for upholding the provisions of the ECU’s Academic Integrity
Policy as published in the Graduate Catalog (see page 6) (http://www.ecu.edu/cs-

honesty, including provisions regarding plagiarism, cheating, and verbal or written false
statements regarding any circumstance related to academic work.

The Grading System

   A       Excellent
   B       Good
   C       Pass
   I       Incomplete – a grade of I must be resolved within one calendar year or a F will be
           assigned. You will not be able to graduate with an I on your record
   IP      In-Progress – applies to a thesis or professional paper
    F      Failure
   N       Audit

           A student who receives a final grade of C or F on courses totaling in excess of 6
           s.h. will be subject to termination
           Graduation eligibility requires a 3.0 (B) grade point average


                                Graduate Student Appeal Policies

Academic Integrity

Incidents of alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures
published in the student handbook or Clue Book (http://www.ecu.edu/studenthandbook/III.htm)
which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member or a formal hearing
procedure.

Failure to Maintain Standards

The appeal procedure for failure to maintain standards, for example grades, is presented in the
Graduate Catalog, page 39 ((http://author.ecu.edu/cs-hhp/hlth/upload/grcat0607.pdf)

          Financial Support for Graduate Study in Health Education & Promotion

The university provides financial support for graduate studies through several mechanisms. The
following web site presents the possible sources of funding for graduate education at East

Any student gaining regular admission is eligible for consideration for a graduate assistantship.
The assistantship application is found at: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-
hhp/hlth/upload/gradassistapp.pdf These awards provide a stipend of $3750 per semester and
require the student provide the department with 20 hours of service per week. This service will
involve a combination of research and teaching duties. The assistantships do not include
payment of tuition.

Public school teachers (or other personnel paid on the teacher salary schedule) who have
maintained a domicile in North Carolina for less than one year but are employed full-time by a
public school may receive the in-state tuition rate for courses relevant to teacher certification or
professional development as a teacher.

                                        Distance Education

The Division of Continuing Studies www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/dcs/ serves as a bridge between the
student at a distance and the academic and administrative units of the university. The following

                                    Admission Requirements

Regular Admission

Step One: At the University Level

The Graduate School makes determination of eligibility for admission to the graduate program.
All students must first apply to ECU and be admitted by the Graduate School. Complete
information on admissions procedures including instructions for downloading application forms
is available at http://www.ecu.edu/gradschool/ecuhtm_files/appinfo.htm.

Step Two : At the Departmental Level

To be considered for admission into the MAED, the MA, the MSAT, or the MSEH degree, the
student must meet the qualifications listed for the respective degree in the degree program
supplement to this manual (see Section II)

Acceptance into programs in the Department of Health Education and Promotion is determined
by the graduate program director (Dr. Anderson, MSEH; Dr. Johnson, MA, Dr. Walsh, MSAT,
Dr. Barnes, MAED) under guidelines established by the graduate faculty of the department. (see
“Non-qualifying Students” below)

Alternative Routes to Regular Admission

1. Non-degree Admission – Non-degree admission is for those students who wish to begin
   taking courses but do not yet have all necessary scores or transcripts ready for admission, or
   those students interested in the coursework but NOT interested completing the actual degree

   Students who fall into either of these categories may choose to visit the Graduate School
   website and apply as a non-degree student. This allows the applicant to enroll in graduate
   courses with no implication that the student will be admitted to the Graduate School or the
   degree program in Health Education and Promotion. If the student is admitted into a degree
   program, a maximum of 9 semester hours of coursework taken as a non-degree student may
   apply toward the credit requirements of the degree program (6 hrs in the MAED). Non-
   degree courses completed with a grade of C may NOT be used in a degree program.

2. Admission of Non-qualifying Students to the Graduate Programs in Health Education

   Non-qualifying students may be admitted to the program after fulfilling a probationary
   prescription. In order to qualify for admission the student must (1) have either a 2.25 overall
   GPA or a 2.75 senior year GPA and achieve at least a score of 376 on the MAT or 740
   (verbal + quantitative) on the GRE or (2) have either a 3.00 overall GPA or a 3.50 senior year
   GPA regardless of the test score. The student then must earn no less than a "B" in two
   graduate level courses taken in non-degree status. These courses are to be approved by the
   director the student’s degree program. One of the courses must be at the 6000 level and must
   be taken within the department. Admission of non-qualifying students can only be
   accomplished with approval of the Program Director.

                                    Additional Coursework

Applicants with undergraduate degrees in other areas may be required to take additional
coursework. These courses can be taken co-requisite to the student’s regular graduate program
and may be taken at the graduate or undergraduate level as determined by the director of the
student’s degree program. The assignment for such coursework is made at the time of admission
by the graduate program director for the respective degree.

                  Time Limits for Completing Degree and Transfer Credit

All requirements (including any transfer credit) must be completed within six years of the date
the student is admitted to the program. Failure to complete requirements within the six-year
period results in loss of those credit hours completed prior to this time frame.

Up to 20% of the credit hours in a non-doctoral program may be earned in a different but
regionally accredited institution. No credit hours completed as part of an earned graduate degree
can be counted toward a second master’s degree. Admitted students must work with their
advisor to assure that courses taken elsewhere will be accepted for transfer credit. From the

the needed information to complete this form.

            College of Health and Human Performance Master’s Hooding Policy

In order for a student this college to receive a hood at semi-annual ceremonies he/she must meet
the following requirements:
        1.      Be within six semester hours of completion of his/her degree
        2.      Have successfully completed the Comprehensive Examination (if required the
                degree)
        3.      Students in a thesis option must have successfully proposed his/her thesis topic.

                                        Elective Courses

If elective courses are part of the student’s program, approval of for each elective must be
provided by the graduate program director before the student enrolls. Students may take
additional coursework for their own interest, for professional advancement, or to address
deficiencies. With the exception of deficiencies, this coursework may be during or after
completion of the graduate degree.

                                Health Educators Guide Change

Here is a short story about Ms. Health Educator (certainly could be Mr. too)

Effective health education programs don't always make the headlines, precisely because of their
success in preventing disease, disability and premature death.

In her work as a health educator Ms. Health Educator is witnessing tangible accomplishments
that have made a real difference in people's lives.

If asked, Ms Health Educator would say, "I really believe health education has made a difference
in people's lives. We get a lot of bang for the buck if you can prevent problems in the first place."

A North Carolina native, she started out on a fairly traditional course attending a state school on
a scholarship to earn her health education degree. This experience gave her a great appreciation
for the preventative approach, and she decided to earn her graduate degree in health education at
East Carolina University. She has recently landed a job as a health educator. She is working on
a variety of issues--teen pregnancy, drug use, sexually transmitted diseases and smoking.
Reducing smoking is Ms. Health Educator’s personal crusade. When asked, Ms. Health
Educator responds, "The tobacco work is one of the most important efforts I participate in. The
whole attitude about smoking is changing."

                                      Course Requirements

The basic curriculum plan for the MA in health education and promotion requires 36 s.h. All
students take the core courses and then select from one of three options: thesis, internship, or
course work. Students select electives in consultation with their advisor.

of chair. Overview of principles of epidemiology, including major epidemiologic study designs,
measures of association, clinical trials, bias, confounding, and other topics.

6013. Behavioral Sciences and Health Education (3) P: Admission to the MA in health
education or consent of chair. Introduces concepts of role of social factors in health, illness, and
health education/promotion. Overview of relationships between various social factors with health
outcomes. Introduces theories and approaches of health education/promotion programs.

MA in health education and promotion or consent of chair. Apply existing research and best
practices in methods/strategies utilized by health education and promotion professionals.

6310. Sexuality Education in Health Education and Promotion (3) P: Admission to the MA
in Health Education and Promotion or consent of chair. Knowledge and skills in planning,
developing, implementing and evaluating sexuality education in a community context.

6355. Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Education and Prevention (3) P: Admission to
graduate program or consent of chair. ATOD abuse education and prevention theory and
approaches.

6500, 6501. Independent Study (3,3) P: Consent of chair. Investigates current research and
methodology in health education.

6600. Needs Assessment in Health Education and Promotion (3) P: HLTH 6001, Admission
to the MA in Health Education and Promotion or consent of chair. Needs assessment planning,
implementation and evaluation.

6700. Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods (3) P: HLTH 6600, Admission to the
MA in Health Education and Promotion or consent of chair. Theory, design, methods,
management, analysis, and reporting of qualitative data in evaluation and research contexts.

6800. Quantitative Research and Evaluation Methods (3) P: HLTH 6600, 6700, admission to

analysis and interpretation and applications in evaluation.

6900. Managing Health Education and Promotion Programs (3) P: HLTH 6600, Admission

management principles in developing, organizing, funding, leading, and advocating for health
education and promotion programs.

6990, 6991. Internship in Health Education (3,3) P: Minimum of 18 s.h. in health education
program or consent of chair. Supervised observation and practice in health education setting.

7000. Thesis (3) May be repeated. May count maximum of 6 s.h.

7001. Thesis: Summer Research (1) May be repeated. No credit may count toward degree.
Students conducting thesis research may only register for this course during the summer.

The following are some elective options available to students. They are not intended to be all-
inclusive or restrictive, but rather reflect choices that students typically make.

Adult Education (ADED) courses are designed to develop those skills necessary to design,
initiate, and implement effective educational programs in adult populations. Thus, they serve the

In the public sector, awareness of the need and benefits of environmental health protection are

The Departments of Sociology (http://www.ecu.edu/soci/) and Anthropology
(http://www.ecu.edu/anth/) also have course MA Program students have found useful.

available courses and sections for the current and upcoming semesters.

                                     Graduate Certificates

Students in the course work option may consider certificate programs as a means of fulfilling the
Program’s 36 s.h. requirement. The Division of Continuing Studies maintains a list of these

The Center on Aging offers a graduate certification program in gerontology (aging studies) for
students meeting the admission requirements of the Graduate School. The program is designed
to provide students in residence and persons currently working with older adults an opportunity
to augment their undergraduate training or graduate degree program with a certificate in

The graduate women's studies minor consists of 9 s.h. of graduate-level course. The minor
encourages critical thinking, seeks new knowledge, and explores feminist theory across cultural

The 12 semester hour Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Literature offers continuing
education for post-baccalaureate and post-MA teachers, professionals, and potential graduate
degree students in literatures from diverse ethnic and cultural groups that may have been
excluded from mainstream literary studies. Coursework is interdisciplinary, with emphases on
genre, historical context, and critical methodologies, and a focus on ethnic American and world

The Technical & Professional Communication Certificate requires 15 s.h. (5 courses). The entire
Certificate program can be completed without coming to campus.

The educational objectives of the Certificate in Distance Instruction are to provide interested
persons an opportunity to learn the basic principles of distance delivery of classes, to manage
distance-delivered classes, and to evaluate their effectiveness.

          Additional Coursework for Students without Health Education Degrees

Applicants with undergraduate degrees in areas other than Health Education may be required to
take additional coursework. These courses can usually be taken co-requisite to the student’s
regular graduate program.

                                           Internship

The internship experience allows a student the opportunity to function as a health educator in a
professional setting. The student needs to consider an agency consistent with their interests and
ambitions for the future as well as an agency willing to mentor the student in terms of developing
health education skills and competencies.

All students in the internship option are required to complete both HLTH 6990 and HLTH 6991.
Each course requires 120 contact hours. These courses may be taken simultaneously or
sequentially allowing for flexibility regarding the time period over which the 240 total hours are
accumulated.

                                 Comprehensive Examination

Students selecting the Internship Option and the Course Work Option are required to take a
comprehensive examination. This examination is “open book” and administered over the course
of one week. The comprehensive examination is administered three times a year; during the last
month of the Fall and Spring semesters and mid July. The comprehensive examination covers all
core and research skills courses. In no case will a student who has failed the comprehensive
examination be administered a second exam in the same semester in which he/she took the initial
exam. The comprehensive examination can be taken twice. If a student fails the exam twice
they will be terminated from the MA Program.

                             On Campus and Distance Education

All core courses and research skills courses in the MA Program are delivered on-line. A student,
as well, may take all of their elective courses on-line. A student may complete the MA Program
while on the ECU campus or at a distance. Those students, for example, with Graduate
Assistantships will need to be physically on the campus: however they may choose to be billed
as a distance education student. In this case they forgo certain fees and privileges, for example,
health services and recreation center services.

Can I take classes in the MA Program while not being accepted?
Yes, apply to the Graduate School as a non-degree student. Caution! You may only transfer 9
s.h. taken as an ECU non-degree student to the MA Program.

Can I transfer credits taken at another university to the MA Program.
Yes. First, you can only transfer credits from an unfinished master’s degree program. Second,
you can only transfer 7 of these credits.

How do I buy textbooks, learn how to log on to Blackboard, learn about financial aid, etc?

           THE MAED IN SCHOOL HEALTH EDUCATION




The Master of Arts in Education in Health Education is designed for licensed teachers seeking
advanced certification in classroom teaching, and is the only accredited program leading to "M"
licensure in Health Education in North Carolina. By earning a MAEd, you can improve your
teaching practices and advance professionally. The MAEd will allow for an annual salary
increase, as well as compliment any work you would do to qualify for National Board
Certification. The program is offered 100% online and does not require any classroom time or
thesis.

Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts in Education in Health Education (MAEd) degree program is a 36-semester
hour program consisting of a 12-semester hour Education Core and a 24-semester hour Health
Education Core. The Health Education Core includes an internship that can be completed
without leaving your present position.

                                  REGULAR ADMISSION

ALL MAED APPLICANTS MUST CURRENTLY HOLD OR BE ELIGIBLE FOR AN
INITIAL TEACHING LICENSE.

ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR REGULAR ADMISSION TO THE MAED
DEGREE ARE CONSISTANT WITH ADMISSION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

                                   Non-Degree Student Policies
                                   MAEd in Health Education


If planning to apply to the University as a non-degree student with the intent to pursue a MAEd
in Health Education please be advised of the following policies, effective June 22, 2006.

       The University defines non-degree status as a temporary graduate classification and its
        policy is that a maximum of nine (9) semester hours of course work taken as a non-
        degree student may apply toward the credit requirement of the degree program, in your
        case that is the MAED degree in School Health Education. However, due to the high
        demand of for this degree, the Department of Health Education & Promotion limits
        you to six (6) semester hours of course work as a non-degree student.

       Non-degree students will not be able to enroll in any courses offered by the College of
        Education that are required for the MAEd.

       Fully admitted MAED students receive priority for open seats in a course during
        registration.

At this time, approximately 10% of the students currently enrolled in the MAED are in non-
degree status. Most will earn regular admission before completing six semester hours of
graduate coursework.


       Admission of Non-qualifying Students to the MAED in School Health Education

   Non-qualifying students who are eligible for a teaching license may be admitted to the program after
   fulfilling a probationary prescription consistent with the guidelines in Part I of this manual.

                                      Additional Coursework

Applicants with undergraduate degrees in other areas may be required to take additional
coursework in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and human disease. These courses can be
taken co-requisite to the student’s regular graduate program and may be at graduate or
undergraduate level. The assignment for such coursework is made at the time of admission by
the graduate program director

M Licensure:    Licensure is contingent upon successfully obtaining a passing score on the Health
                Education Praxis exam, successfully completing the MA Ed degree program, and then
                submitting the application forms and fee.

*Health 6990 and 6991 consist of planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting on an
approved culminating project(s).

                             Elective Courses/Add-On Licensure

There are no elective courses in the MAED in School Health Education. Students may take
additional coursework for their own interest, for add-on licensure, or to address deficiencies.
With the exception of deficiencies, this coursework may be completed during or after completion
of the MAED.

Students seeking to add-on certification in driver’s education to their existing teaching license

                              On Campus and Distance Education

All courses in the MAED are delivered on-line. However, a student may complete the MAED
Program while on the ECU campus or at a distance. Those students, for example, with Graduate
Assistantships will need to be physically on the campus: however they may choose to be billed
as a distance education student. In this case they forgo certain fees and privileges, for example,
health services and recreation center services. Tuition costs are available at
